Title: Finally have a Turbo Duo!
Post by: warpig227 on April 30, 2014, 12:16:20 PM
So i came across a turboduo this past weekend, picked it up from a friends video game store for 300. was just about to get a pce duo so it was great timing. anyways, other than a burnt copy of rondo of blood i have no games. what are the must haves of the duo ? Note: I'm new to NEC systems all together, only a few months in with the tg16

Bleh, there are too many to name... your wallet is surely going to die a slow and painful death.

Just for kicks, here are my 5 current favorite U.S. CD releases:

Ys Book I & II
Lords of Thunder
Gate of Thunder
Dungeon Explorer II ($$)
Beyond Shadowgate ($$$!)

Any suggestions made I'd check out on YT myself.

You have to at least beat the "classics" once before playing the AAAAAA titles...:

Final Zone II
Last Alert
Fighting Street
Ys I & II
Valis II & III
etc... play the plain CDROM2 games before playing teh SCD games.

My copy of Gate of Thunder is the 3-in-1 with Bonk's Adventure & Bonk's Revenge plus the hidden Bomberman (U,R,D,L,II).

A nice assortment on 1 disc.

Congrats on getting a Turbo Duo! Just so you know, it might be a good idea to check the capacitors before you go nuts with the games. U.S. Duos are known to have problems with the caps going bad, causing your system to malfunction. If the caps haven't been changed from the originals, it would probably be a good idea to get it done. There are several users here that I'm sure would be willing to help you. :)

For a good laugh, try Last Alert (so cheesy, but so good).

The cheesy voice over is half the fun! The other half is the awesome gameplay!

Don't wait too long.  Leaking caps can damage the pcb and/or other components, requiring a much more extensive and difficult repair job than had it been fixed early on.

Get a Burned Copy of SAZ and Terraforming.  Not the best games in the world but they are a lot of fun (hence the burned copies)

Another 5 games to consider apart from what has already been named:

Valis 1
Bomberman 94
Salamander
Popful Mail
Star Parodier

Some of them are Japanese Hucards, so your Turbo Duo needs either a mod or a converter. I don't know if the same applies when using an Everdrive.

And get the caps fixed before the leaks damage your precious Duo even more. :)

The Everdrive patches the rom to the system it's in and has a reset button if you switch between a TG-16 & PCE. You know how you can get an Express or GT modded with an automatic/switchless region mod, I'm told that messes up the Everdrive. I chose not to have Turbokon do the region mod on my Expresses for that reason.

I saw a few on eBay awhile ago that were going for around $80-90. I have no idea what they go for but it peaked my interest to see it on the PCE.

I've only ever played the NES and arcade version, how is the PCE version?

The PCE version is the NES game on steroids and not just another arcade port.

Jeez i was on my phone and i don't know what happened to the format, that was weird.

But I'll have to look into that more, sounds pretty interesting to me

If you're into traditional JRPGs I'd get Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Dragon Slayer. Both are really good in my opinion. Even though it's been mentioned above, Lords Of Thunder. One of my favourite games on the PC Engine.

Congrats on scoring a Duo! I remember getting my Duo from TZD back in the day it's a shame they aren't around anymore. They were a great way for new turbo owners to score some games outside of eBay. Make sure you check out Spida1a's turboviews channel on YouTube he's got plenty of quality in-depth reviews to help make some purchase decisions.
