Title: Community shared Y's III?
Post by: mossman43 on May 01, 2014, 02:25:12 AM
I have a second copy of Y's III that isn't in the greatest condition but played fine while I played it. I was thinking that I could just donate it to the community so if there was anyone that just wanted to play it, they could keep it until it was complete and then on to the next person on the list. I could ship it to the first person and then it would be that persons responsibility to get it to the next and so forth. We could use this thread to track it. Any interest?

I have the imported version and used to play the US version when I had it.
What the heck, I'll sign up on the bandwagon to pass it along. Could do an interesting comparison between the two dubs. :)

I would be in for the challenge too - I like the idea. We could include a list with autographs and dates from all players to make it even more special

I got an import copy of Ys3 recently and took a stab at translating part of it. Sure enough, the intro scene where the narrator spoke of Adol defeating an alien while showing scenes of a guy who couldn't look less like Adol if he tried? Yeah, that was a legend about a hero from ages long ago defeating a monster.
Seriously, they didn't translate that dialog, they just wrote stuff that kinda worked while having zero idea what was going on.
I like the idea of a shared Ys3. I had it when I was a kid but at some point I lost a stack of games. I don't think I'll participate because it's on my to-buy list as I want to have all the games I lost back on my shelf. I hope this works out well though.

I already own the U.S version but it would be neat to see some other games go out as a loaner. :) Maybe like Beyond Shadowgate or Loom.

it is. I was just messing around because a number of folks call it "wise". And don't you DARE add an apostrophe or Necro will kill you. Seriously, he's been known to hunt people down and literally kill them. like whole family and pets. kill.

I popped it open to be entertained by the intro last night and saw something a bit scary on the disc!!
Doesn't that look like a nasty ass crack on the bottom of the disc?
(http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx80/Joshua_Jaeger/IMG_20140507_192221_zps7588ab92.jpg) (http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx80/Joshua_Jaeger/IMG_20140507_192228_zpse56e5c19.jpg) I was surprised that it still managed to play the intro (mostly because it didn't have to read any info off the edge of the disc, I wonder how well it will do later on when I get further... but oh well. (http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx80/Joshua_Jaeger/IMG_20140507_192356_zpsa4ef38c6.jpg)
I'd really warn people to be EXTREMELY careful with this disc when you get it. (I'll be sure to double bubble wrap it when I ship it to Bernie *Or is Wolfman next?). I wonder how much further this crack will extend after a few times shipping it....

good thing Bernie gets it next. I bet a hair dryer will melt that crack away and mend the disc back together.

LOL
I think I'll make a copy of it and send a CDr of it along with for the next stop so people can try out either one if they'd want. I'm also going to send along a mystery game with it to build up the package going around. :)

Hey, don´t forget to count me in for one of the next rounds! I recently acquired a CD refurbishing machine for my CDA/Games collection...I might be able to give it a good finish if that crack doesn´t happen to be as serious as it looks like in the photo...

hmm.. Skip sending it to me. Move on to the next guy. I dont wanna get partway into it, and have it freeze. lol. You can bet at some point in the game, it will stop working.

Somewhat serious note, why pass around the disc at all if we can just burn a CDR?

After the package leaves me it will be a two game community library. I think the hope here is that much like a snowball growing larger the further it travels downhill, the same too will be this!
At least... that's what I hope...
Next stop is Austria!

Yay! Looking forward. Gotta stop playing Last Alert, so that I can free up time for Ys III
EDIT: How much time am I allowed to play on it before I pass it on? Shall we make a unified limit for every part-time owner?

Play it as long as you want. Hopefully you finish it if it allows. I also have an extra Loom that is actually in great condition that will start going around as well!

Cool!
Hopefully there will a chance one day to have Beyond Shadowgate rotate as well. Seems to get up in price quite high in the coming months, when I go after what other games go for at the moment...

Hi folks,
I just wanted to keep you updated on this. Today I received the community package from _joshuaTurbo, including the "mystery" game :)
Now the set contains following:
1x Ys 3 original 1x Ys 3 Backup copy on CDR 1x "Mystery" Game
Right after I had time to test the original on my CDROM2 I found out that there is no music in the intro, on my other drive I would get roughly 5 secs of music, then it would stop. Data was being read fine however...
I'd really warn people to be EXTREMELY careful with this disc when you get it. (I'll be sure to double bubble wrap it when I ship it to Bernie *Or is Wolfman next?). I wonder how much further this crack will extend after a few times shipping it....
I can second that. There are a *lot* of tiny scratches on the label side of the disc, not to mention the big crack you can see in his photos (I am not sure if that really affects reading the disc, since I can´t see any damage to the layer side). There were many scratches on the underside, as well as a deep scratch, where my fingernail would even stop moving across the surface!
So I gave it a try and took some time in refurbishing the disc. Here you can see what it looks like after my attempts. Look at them in the biggest size, there you can examine the difference before and after the polishing procedure:
There is soooo much difference, and it even plays the intro music as well! I am sure it will affect gameplay as well, as I experienced an improvement on other scratched discs after this treatment in the past.

Wolfman, I'm really interested in the tool you used to make the disc look so much cleaner. Any links to a product/hardware/place to make my discs look all pretty and shiny? :D

Sure, here it is:
http://jfjeasypro.com/shop/
I am using the "Easy Pro". IF you have a big bunch of CDs/DVDs then it is worth buying one. Since I didn´t just grind TG and PCE disks but also DVDs and a lot of my favourite CDs from the 90ies it was well worth it. There is no reliable service available at my place, and I wouldn´t go to a video shoppe having someone "do" it.
With this machine it takes time and your personal attention. Some disks take several approaches to be like new. Sometimes it takes rough paper, fine paper, white buffing, blue buffing, all in all 30 min until you removed the deepest scratch...it totally depends on the condition and your "skill" (which you develop over time). I recommend trying the first 5 discs at least with CDs you don´t plan on owning...it takes some time to get used to the right amount of treatment, and you need patience for that. I managed to make a disc unreadable with that machine by my own mistake, only to bring it back with patience and the right treatment - now it plays fine.
It doesn´t help though when the top layer (the label side) has been scratched - dead end for every disc.
With the machine you get enough to repair around 50 discs (which is an average - I´d say it is more, cause I use material sparingly), for grinding as well as polishing and cleaning. The manual is very detailed and recommends to absoluteley stick to their procedure - which I recommend too.

Just out of curiosity where in the world is this Community shared game library? Now 3 games strong!!

Oh man I completely forgot about this thread! I've been wanting to play Ys III but have been too lazy to burn it.
If I recall, wasn't there an issue with the disc?
But I see now that I was supposed to PM someone and I never did. If it's still out there, may I inquire the person who has it? My apologies.

I love the idea of a sharing library. Where, literally, we have used the same disc. It adds something fun in our sterile, post-physical media world of digitali ad nauseumi.

The disc is fine so far, the only issue I ran into during playing was near at the end, where you wont hear all of the dialogue of the end boss befor you come to the final battle.
Apart from that it plays fine.
Btw I still have the package. So who´s next to receive it?

Unless you changed your username or I'm blind, I'm not seeing a spot in this thread where you opted into this project. If you do want in, I'd say you are right behind Jtucci31 now

Sorry for my late reply, was a little busy.
jtucci is next in line, I will ship tomorrow.
Regarding CD repairs --- sure I can do that, but since I live in Europe, I invite everyone from this continent to contact me in case they want a repair. I can also do other discs as well - it is not restricted to TG/PCE stuff. So far it has worked fine for me - on DVDs as well.
