Title: Turbo Fest (VGS) 2014
Post by: chany60126 on May 01, 2014, 02:40:41 PM
You heard the rumors, you saw the flyers Turbo Fest is returning to Chicagoland!! The summertime classic is back with more fun and more games to play. Come take part in our exciting 5-player Battle Lode Runner and Bomberman 94 tourney matches. Then try to navigate the treacherous obstacles Tatsujin throws your way in this high scoring shooter tournament.

Tournament times are as follows:

Battle Lode Runner: 11 AM
Bomberman 94: 1 PM
Tatsujin: 3 PM

The event will take place July 12th in Lombard, IL at the Heron Point Convention Center. The address is 665 W. North Ave in Lombard. It is in the same parking zone as the Fairfield Inn. Lombard is located a couple of miles west of Chicago. Turbo Fest is part of a retro-gaming convention called the Video Game Summit (VGS). The show, as well as Turbo Fest, will run from 10 AM-6 PM. There will be many people selling retro games and many other tournaments for other consoles as well. Arcades will also be present.

Admission is $5, but the price is well worth the admission. Entrance into our tournaments is 100% free. We would love to meet fellow T-16 enthusiasts such as yourselves.

In comparison to MGC, the VGS is smaller. However, you will find that the gaming area is very spacious and can do a great job accommodating the awesomeness that is Turbo Fest. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Come spend the day with your PCEFX brethren.

Let's keep the good times rolling!

I also want to point out some of the cool things Chicago has to offer in terms of gaming.
First off, Galloping Ghost Arcade is an absolute MUST-SEE. It is technically the second largest arcade in the US, and comprised of mostly retro arcades. It has got some pretty obscure cabinets such as Galaga 88, Street Fighter 1 (Fighting Street), Splatterhouse and many more. Feast your eyes on the amazing cabinet list:
http://www.gallopingghostarcade.com/games_list.htm

If you're in the mood for buying turbob games, you should check out the stores below. They have a decent selection of T-16 games.

I will definitely try and be in attendance... really just depends on whether or not I find a job in Colorado the requires me to be there before VGS.  If not, I plan to be there!

Just f.y.i. - I was up at People Play Games recently and found that their TG-16 inventory diminished quite a lot.  They moved the games to a different area and all fit on about 1/3 the shelves vs. what I remember them having before. I mean anywhere that stocks Turbo games is cool, so it still is worth a visit if you're in the area.  Also still a few titles under the glass in front (the guy quoted me a loose Bonk 3 hu for $170.00).  Anyway, I don't know what's up, but they didn't have as much selection, it seemed to me.

Its amazing that any store can keep inventory of anything turbo related with the recent deluge of collectors and the incredible price inflation on the stuff.

No doubt about it.  It's so unique to come across any turbo stuff regularly stocked and sold off the shelf these days, hopefully they can keep it up.

Yeah, People Paly Games is a great store.  I've only been there twice, because it's rather far from me, but both times I was impressed by their Turbo/PCE selection, and both times I walked away having purchased several games.

Anyway, my sister and I are planning to come to VGS, but we're going to have to brush up on our Tatsujin skills.  (That means our skills of being able to throw controllers across the room, knock the system & TV off of the table, grind our teeth, and yell and scream in frustration..., all in the privacy of our own minds so as to not upset the crowd.)  What's up with the masochism, anyway?  I thought Raiden last year was hard enough... now Tatsujin?  What's next year?  Rabio Lepus blindfolded?

I'm trying to work out the logistics now as well.  I'm hopeful. Turbokon, if you end up making it, I'll have a hotel room in the hotel adjacent to the convention.  And I'll have a spare bed.  The last two conventions I've attended someone has crashed in my room so I've made it a point to secure a room with an extra bed. :)

I don't catch the reference, but I am curious...

It's from the tv show "Archer" very funny series...coach mc gurth does the voice of the main character (more recently known for voicing bob from bobs burgers) named Archer, or as he is know in the spy world "Dutches" named after his mothers dog who is also the filed director for the secret agents.

Here is a YouTube compilation from season 1.  I wouldnt call it the "best" but eh...

Here is a better one

You can get the first three seasons dirt cheap and the fourth season just ended.

Title: Re: Turbo Fest (VGS) 2014
Post by: Bardoly on June 11, 2014, 09:34:10 AM
Does Tatsujin have stage clears?  i.e. Does the game tell you when you've finished a stage?  Or is the game all one long stage?  I beat 3-4 mini-bosses last night and then some 'tank' looking thing that I though might be the stage 1 boss, but the game didn't inform me of such, and the screen kept scrolling with no respite from enemy attack.

No it just keeps going. Once the boss music stops then you know you've entered the next level. I know the Genesis version lists the stage number in the side bar. I need to check if the PCE version displays it elsewhere as it doesn't force that stinkin' bar upon you.

A friend of mine decided to schedule his tuxedo fitting that Saturday for a wedding I'm standing up in. Kind of non-negotiable so I think I'm going to be sitting this one out unfortunately unless it gets miraculously rescheduled.

It's almost tempting to just drive down for the night if people are going to be doing the Galloping Ghost thing. Who is getting in Friday night?

The Fairfield Inn in the same parking lot as VGS is the best bet as you get a discount for booking.

What are the chances of someone setting up a Skype like we had at the MGC TurboFest?  It looks like Roflmao may be making the trip down to me casa, and I'm inviting some peeps who have never before obeyed (poor bastards).  I realize of course we won't be able to partake in the bomberman tournament, but you can laugh at my feeble attempts to play tatsujin!

Agreed - we need to set up a SEELE-style via-satellite feed for the folks that can't make it. Put a camera on a mobile cart. Or a roomba or something.

I have Skype on my Laptop but my webcam doesn't work very well. With Beemer, Josh, Neccler, and Jeff out it's not going to be the same. So, what those of us who are going need to do is have such a great time that those four goobers that aren't showing feel so immensely guilty for having real life issues that they break down and vow to never miss another VGS ever again.

Moreover, I think it would be cool if we could some live streaming of the event via Twitch, ustream or some other method simultaneously along with the skype for the forum to see.

If someone knows how to do it, I both have a pretty good Sony Handy Cam camcorder with a tripod, and my Logitech webcam was the top of the line ($100+) when I bought it.   I do know how to do Skype, but the for other programs mentioned, I have no clue.

Looks like I'm going to need to book a hotel.  What are some of closest hotels to the event that every body will be staying at?  Also I still need  someone local who can pick me up from the airport. I would be very grateful:)

The Fairfield Inn in the same parking lot as VGS is the best bet as you get a discount for booking.

Looks like it's all booked.

Damn! Try Comfort Suites just down the road on North Ave. Ashe and me stayed there last year. It's only minutes from VGS.

Thanks Mathius, I just booked at comfort suites.

Chany, my X68k is good to go. I don't have anything different from MGC but there is still a lot to choose from. Same goes for AES.

See you guys soon! We'll be heading up Friday night. Probably rolling into the Fairfield at around 10 PM or so CST. Is anyone hitting Galloping Ghost at all that weekend?

I'll be heading down to Nullitys for our own Turbofest and have produced a multi-cam+computer screen live broadcast (10+ episodes our first, and likely only, season). I'm planning on bringing down some of my gear in case we want to tinker with it and go a little fancier than just skype.  But for you guys, the biggest hurdle would be the high upload stream.  I don't know if wifi (if you even get decent wifi at that location) would be enough to handle even a low-quality video stream.

sweet man! I have cox ultimate (or, as I tell the ladies, ultimate cox) which I believe is 50 Mbps upstream. 150 down. We should be set!  Might want to bring you obey because I only have 1 duo but 3 televisions!  I'll have 2 or three buddies over, too, who have (shamefully) never obeyed and therefore might make my skill at tatsujin a little less laughable.

if there is anyone else who finds KS to be a more tenable destination, let it be known!  I need to plan in advance how much booze and pizza will be needed. ( :

Gave me a couples of years and I may move back to Kansas.

Why did I think you were in the UK? I made up an entire narrative about you (stereotyped) based on you screen name alone. You were the only pcefx'er in Ireland. Or who formerly lived in Ireland but moved to Brighton. Or Glasgow. Or the Isle of Jersey.

Also (to everyone coming to VGS),

I'm currently planning to bring all of my trade/sell stuff, and a few games (i.e. Bazzy and a few other uncommon titles).  If there is anything specific that someone would like for me to bring (i.e. my PCE Duo, a CRT TV, other games, etc...), then please let me know.

Later he and his wife took Ashe and me to EGM's old site to show us around and tell stories. It couldn't have been a better night for me (with the exception of the those who couldn't make it).

Another successful Turbo Fest at the VGS. We had a great attendance at the show and there were lots of people participating in our tournaments. There were so many people that signed up for our Bomberman 94 tourney, we nearly had to create four brackets to accommodate them all. While many of the PCEFX regulars didn't attend, it was refreshing seeing new faces who had a genuine interest in the system. Seeing everyone have fun makes organizing these events totally worthwhile. Huge thanks goes to DragonmasterDan, Mathius and turbokon for helping me set up the gaming area. I couldn't have done it without you guys. :)

Here's a few pictures I took of the event.

The mugs are great.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Looks like everyone had a great time.

Before we're a bunch of old geezers I hope;)

I got in third place in Tat :-({|=. Now I'm irritated  if I had known I would get close to that amazing second place mug I would have practiced more often. I'm glad it was Matt that won. Congrats Matt that was a great run  I'm glad Ash got it on video.

belated thanks to those made VGS 14 a great success.
TurboFest is only one of the 3 major events at VGS( Jagfest is one and Harmony games is the other)
here is the url to our 2014 photo gallery  winch also include links to 2 highlight videos from the show:

plans for 2015 are being looked into and we are in contact with at least one new venue since we can't return to heron point( the people who run heron don't want to be connected to fairfeild inn, which put us in this position).
if you want to see VGS continue we need your help. by donating.
The Turbofest Tour shirt thats in pre-order status is an VGS Exclusive shirt since only list the VGS and Octurbofest dates (even though MGC turbofest is connected to the other two, I have decided not to include those dates since its would be odd to include an mgc item in vgs shop. any item in pre-order status has 30 days to get 10 orders to get moved into the shop or be removed)
if there is demand for general Turbofest section like I have the Jagfest section, there is chance I can add it to AVC news Stand, (Jagfest section started up 2007 which was the 10th anniversary of jagfest that started in il 1997,and there was a demand for it,even though that slowed down there are still plenty of jaguar fans out there)
will there be  VGS 2015? maybe I should have news about it in coming weeks.

It's been a nice run of five straight turbo fests at VGS. Hopefully we can have a sixth one there next year.
