I have been wondering why when some people come to this forum they get bagged for being collectads While others can proudly display their items, state I am a collector and not get any headache about it. So I have to be missing something.... Maybe some of the long term members on here can give me some feedback on it?...
-
also non-collectards bought most of their collection bitd or during the 90s/early2k, and not only in the past 6 month.
-
So, if I am understanding this correctly.... If I grew up with the system, started buying items again around 2000 and have been adding to that I would not be a collectard? Even if I collect them while playing them? Just want to be sure I am getting this right.... Lastly if you have one of every damn platform out there, that would not make you a collectard? Why do you need every game system platform?...
-
So if we don't loose interest were not collectards? I refuse to pay top dollar for a game that went for 30 - 40 bux brand new back in the day. I understand that some games and items will go for a higher price due to the rarity but 6 or 7 or even 50X the original selling price is nuts. I have loved the TG since day one and continue to love it to this day. I went hog wild on the cd games when they came out and thus my huey's suffered. I did manage to put together a few nice titles, but none that would command thousands of dollars. I do buy lots to try and get the ones I don't have but it is far and few in between and I would sell the rest back but at a reasonable price never fully recouping the money spent, but that's not the intent. The intent was/is to have a complete collection one day, so I can stop paying more than what some DOUCHE BAGS think a game is worth. Thanks Nullity, for the explanation, this was a huge question I had too and now I know, and knowing is half the battle.....G.I. ahh you know the rest :-)
-
Even if I collect them while playing them?
If you buy games to play them, you're not a collectard. If you buy games for the sake of buying games...
-
A good example would be a member who signs up with a post like this
"Hi I just found out about the Turbografx recently and decided I want to go for a complete collection. I want everything to have the cardboard boxes and MINT.
Is there a list of games that have the boxes somewhere? Also what's a good price for Magical Chase? I've been looking for a copy now and the prices are crazy!!!"
-

This is the heart of it.

That sums it up nicely.

There are also people with Down Syndrome who accidentally get ahold of a Paypal account and have eBay access. These people have been known to be called Collectards, but this is when it becomes less politically correct.
-
So basically, if you were a player and now just someone who collects you are not a colllectard? If everything is displayed on a shelf and gets no action my understanding is that you are a collectard....

It's funny when you shit on collectards, but support this one!!!!!

That too :-) too bad ya can't burn huey's. Just a side note... I have probably played more games than most people, I grew up in the arcades and with home systems. Hell I even own a bunch of arcade machines and they get plenty of use as well. In the end you won't find a more true gamer than me. Bottom line I collect to play unlike some douche bags here. Oh almost forgot you can kinda burn them i guess if you own an everdrive or flash cart....whats the use then,,, same as burning a cd but again no one gets shit for that huh....guess you have to pick and choose ......

Yeaahhhhhhhhhhhhh B)
but seriously to me the definition refers to people for the sake of collecting games and paying premiums for the sake of gloating rights and they hardly play any of their games. add insult to injury a couple of months later they sell their shit back on ebay for ridiculous prices...

I agree, and the sad part is most of them f*ckers really do know what they have and play stupid. I watched one guy who found a system with 10 games for 24 bux. The whole video he just kept saying I can't believe it I can't believe it it was on sale it was originally 30 but the store was having a sale blah blah blah ....kiss my french ass, or french kiss my ass, how ever you like it. Shit like that pisses me off, not because I don't find shit like that because I have but don't play dumb ass like you don't know what you have.

collecting an entire collection doesnt make one a collectard, its the thought process behind it. A collectard collects just to collect and for bragging rights. The investment concept surely follows this mentality.
A true TG16 or any retrogamer is one who grew up with the system and plays what they buy. The concept of building the entire collection is done with the mentality that he/she wants to play all the games they couldn't buy back then.
The money one pays doesn't mean much in my book only because whats expensive today may be cheap tomorrow depending on the economic average income. Just 15 years ago 30.00 filled up your gas tank, today it gets you a 1/4 tank of gas. Sure none of us wants to see the inflation of prices but what someone is willing to pay doesn't make them a collectard. This is excluding the concept of using prices to inflate value ect.

Ok so I would be just a collector as I do enjoy playing my games and the only reason I would have the full collection is to give each one a try. I never take anyone word for it that a game sucks or is bad because I may find some entertainment value where other have not.

Alright let's clarify, I was not talking about my self in regards to 11 games left... I do not list on my posts nor does my posting list a catch phrase or info about what I need.... I only wanted to understand what people thought was a collectard on here... Answers have been giving let's move on...

I'm no authority on the subject, and in fact my confusion on the very same thing led to some friction when I first started coming here. But here is my take on it:
A collectard is someone who discovers a system and decides to make a game of Pokemon out of it. Gotta catch em all! Gotta get em fast! Knowing very little about the platform's library or actual value of its titles, they go forth and pay top dollar for "teh rarez" regardless of there being lower priced options available. It has to be megamint, as it will sit on a shelf as a display item and receive very little if any play. Sometimes they even get thrown in acrylic prisons, thereby exacerbating the real or perceived balance of supply and demand. This practice is not limited to "teh rarez", common titles get gobbled up from too-high BINs... multiple copies, even, so that a megamint frankencommon can be assembled.
The result of this graceful ballet of indiscriminate money slinging is that suddenly a precedent has been set in "sold" ebay history for games selling more often and at higher prices than they normally would. This results in sellers raising the base asking price of all titles, and really jacking up the asking price on "teh rarez". A cycle which feeds itself when the common collectard loses interest in a system and takes to the eBays in effort to recoup their expenses or turn a profit, and the next collectard comes along and gobbles up the too-high BINs and perpetuates the cycle.
It is especially tragic to see a large lot go to a collectard. They already have most of what is in the lot, and will sell the dupes (after scavenging the mintiest parts) for the new inflated base price they helped to create.
The non collectard generally likes mintiness as much as the next guy, but isn't as prone to pay 100x normal price for it or buy 5 more copies trying to find a manual without creases or a card without Iinsertion marks. The collection grows at the rate of "I wanna play that one and this one" and games are added as good deals become available. They are played and cherished.
Sweet Jesus. There should be a Wikipedia entry for "Collectard", and this post should be the body, in its entirety.
Also, YouTube "finds" videos f*cking SUCK! 30 minutes to show off a small pile of shit games from Goodwill.

Bithead 1000 makes really funny finds videos, but other than that they are pretty awful.
My biggest problems with "finds" videos or 99% of collecting videos online:
1.) If these guys are all about acquiring this mountain of games, then why don't they have standards when it comes to condition? I.E. mixing loose carts with complete games, etc. Why go to Goodwill and pick up 40 loose carts of Army Men Sarge's Revenge and Madden 99? Mixing loose carts and CIB's on a shelf looks like dick
2.) Why do these guys say "I've been wanted to play this for a while now" about every game? Bullshit. You didn't want to play that until you saw it pop up in someone's else's dumbass YouTube video.
3.) These guys present themselves as knowledgeable members of the hobby to the viewing public, but then proceed to prove that they generally have no idea what they're talking about - incorrect facts, stating the obvious, etc.
There are, of course, exceptions to the rule but they're hard to find.

A guy I know has a mostly complete set of Turbo stuff and rails on the system for having shitty games. He's an idiot. If you don't like the system and you don't like the games then having a collection of it seems completely stupid to me. I don't think that he's even played most of them.
If the purpose of your collection is only to show off how many games you have then you're a collectard. I'm not saying that you can't be one in other ways too; only saying that's a guaranteed way to join the club.
-
For bad systems I tend to get a small sampling of games to play, some good some bad. I have a wierd thing about crappy systems. CD-i for example... love me dat tetris!
-
For every community that hates them, there's communities that embrace Collectards.
Most have seen the sites that give you little icons for completed sets. Not just full sets, you get icons for...well...anything. All the Final Fantasy games, icon. All the Mario games, icon. I wonder if they have a Madden icon??? You get the point. Like a fricking icon equates to some type of credibility. It equates to I'm an idiot, look how many icons I have to prove it.

You know what, I am more a collecter then a player theses days.. My kids don't appreciate the old school games so I don't play much until I have buddies over or I say " f*ck it" I am going to my man cave.
But it is totally fine being a collector if you have f*cking common sense.. Collectors with big visa's or big wallets make collectors look bad.. I play my games and would play more if I was not just a weekend dad, just don't throw collectors all in the same category as some want to be players more.
it's like a distant relationship at times, I appreciate it, don't forget about it and will love it always.
Sorry guys I wish I did play more.

I think that makes sense. With video games it's weird because unlike toys there is a play aspect as well as the shelf aspect. Well you could play with toys but I'm talking about shelf collectors in general (I.e. Sports collectibles, spoons). And it does suck when people hoard games just to sit on a shelf and not let other people who want to play them, play them.

I don't know if my kids would appreciate the old school games less, but I've never really given them the chance. They pretty much only ever play SNES or Turbo. :)

It takes me weeks (literally) to spend a decent amount of time with a game these days. I'm busy with kids, but I'm also busy working on other turbo stuff (not playing the damn games, though), so I feel the same as you.
I wish I had more free time, but I don't.
We have discussed it before, but a lot of us, who are busy, have found other ways to stay connected to our hobby: 10 years ago I was 30% interested in music and artwork and advertising/marketing of games. These days, since I can listen to music whilst commuting/cleaning/taking care of kids/errands, I am much more interested in music/tunes.
When I do play, I play games my 4th grader likes..luckily she likes some 80's-90's arcade/console games. Galaga? Yes. Bonk? Yes. Bad Dudes (arcade)? Yes.

Very well said, Sparky and Esteban. Lots of us in that boat.
While this is true for most. I did get my oldest son (13) into the "retro" gaming. He loves it when we do a retro weekend and pull out the Turbo. He like to lear about the roots of video gaming and often times will ask "hey dad have you ever played <insert random game here>" for x,y,z system. He will then compare it to something of today and pick the games apart stating that "your games were much harder and had better stories" your games meaning my generation of games. So in that aspect I got lucky. Like another member here I only have my oldest son on the weekends so the time I spend with him is priceless to me and feels awesome when he takes an interest in something I have interest in. Bet your hard earned cash when the 11 month old whom is with me all the time, comes of age he will get a lesson in "retro" games too. I too don't have the time I used to for playing but, I can say I play at least once a day.

Well if you spend less time doing the Vandamn, you would have more for gaming....

I think that any hobby that involves some sort of need for a set of physical items immediately results in some collector mentality. Sports cards, beanie babies, my girlfriend's purse addiction, etc. I kind of look at it like the Autism Spectrum, it varies from healthy to unfortunately weird. I think that at the end of the day if you have a credit card with $000s on it and you haven't utilized your hobby's item in several weeks, you are a "Collectard."
However, after I read the latest 4 pages of this thread, I really want to know just how big is tggodrey's gas tank? $120 to fill up is absurd. Jet fuel?
The money one pays doesn't mean much in my book only because whats expensive today may be cheap tomorrow depending on the economic average income. Just 15 years ago 30.00 filled up your gas tank, today it gets you a 1/4 tank of gas. Sure none of us wants to see the inflation of prices but what someone is willing to pay doesn't make them a collectard. This is excluding the concept of using prices to inflate value ect.

Clash, I was thinking of the Superbee when I typed that. Yes its 120 to fill up.

Dang, you got some nice toys.
I go full collectard on some stuff but I can at least embrace it because I love to play the games when I get the time. Case in point, I just finished a complete Sega Pico set. It's totally worthless to probably 99.9999% of all gamers, but I love the weirdness of it.
Plus, when my daughter gets a bit older she can play the games for fun! Or, if she hates the games it will be punishment! MUAAHAHAHA!

So, wait, the only way we can be a turbografx fan is if we get in our time machine and buy one in the 90s?

All tru TG-16 retrogamers settle for no less than a 50% profit margin on their Turbo investments and never wait as long as a entire week before flipping the games they receive. Together they will soon weed out all the non-133ts who can't afford to pay thousands of dollars for a handful of games. The n00bs can fool around with their roms and emulators, so they have nothing to complain about while while tru fans preserve the hardcopies and packaging for the safes, store lockers and failed-estate-sale garbage bins of future generations of tru fans.

A true TG16 or any retrogamer is one who grew up with the system and plays what they buy.
The n00bs can fool around with their roms and emulators, so they have nothing to complain about while while tru fans preserve the hardcopies and packaging for the safes, store lockers and failed estate sale garbage bins of future generations of tru fans.
. Screw a 529 plan! I'm collecting all teh Obey r@rez so my kids can go to college!

LOL you would first have to spend their college fund to get the ones that would put them through college.

I'm an anime figurine collectard. I just collect them to collect, not because I give a damn about the anime they're from. If their clothes come off, bonus.

Keep him away from everything, Did you see the trash can with the guns and controllers in it? That is not how you wrap up your cables. ID-10-T error.
