Title: Has anybody RGB modded their PC Engine?? I need help!
Post by: HumanBean on May 27, 2006, 06:10:19 AM
Hi,
I am trying to modify my PC Engine (the white one) so i can use it on a PAL tv but i'm not having any luck.
I checked out the gamesx site but it seems a bit vague to me.
Is there a pinout for audio?
what is the +5v for?
What pins do I use on the scart connector?

My heads in bits! Its probably dead simple but it hasn't clicked with me yet.

Can anybody help me?

Everything needs power, even the RGB cable. That's why you need +5V.

Does the PC Engine have an AV port? If so, you can tap audio from that. Click here for pinouts. (http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/duoav.htm)

Here's  (http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/eprebel/SoundAndVision/Engineering/SCART.html)a scart pinout chart.

R - pin 15
G - pin 11
B - pin 7

+5V - pin 8
L audio - pin 6
R audio - pin 2
GND - pin 17
Composite video - pin 20

I hope that helps. If you have any questions, just ask.

Oh, and you'll need to connect transistors on the R, G and B lines. They have three legs:
1. Color (R, G or B) in (from the video chip)
2. +5V
3. Color (R, G or B) out (to the RGB cable).

White PCE's have no AVs, but Core Grafx I and II do and I think the PCE Shuttle might have AVs as well.

It doesnt have any AV port but it does have an ext bus port which is where i can tap into the outputs instead of going straight to the chip.

I think I need to invest in a new soldering iron! this one is really, really......well, not very good, to be polite. It almost destroyed my Sega Saturn and I'm scared of letting it loose on my PCE because it took me ages to get one (In hindsight I should have bought a CoreGraphix but that would have been too easy and they dont have the same appeal as the original white ones).

Right, I will attempt this mod shortly and keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks for the info it has helped me tremendously. I will let you know if it works (and probably end up asking for more advice!)

Cheers

I recommend a 15W soldering iron with a 1mm tip (you can buy the tip seperately).

I've would love to buy a Weller if I had the cash but they can be quite expensive.
When you mentioned the transistors were you refering to the RGBS signal amp board? I reckon i should be able to knock one of those up.
I also need to know where i can tap into L/R audio for the output connector.
Thanks

Remove all your cables and stuff, I accidentally shorted something myself and got no picture, but when I removed the cables there, everything worked just fine.
