Title: Suggestions for a new(ish) collector
Post by: johnnymad on July 27, 2014, 12:35:22 PM
I have around 20 HuCard games and most are complete. Picked up a few lately and started buying loose only as the prices for loose are still pretty high. Is this what you guys would do if you were just starting out? I've read suggestions elsewhere on the forum to just pick up a Turbo Everdrive and then just wait for deals to pop up. Will probably get one of these eventually but do you think loose cards is the way to go? Might even do the same thing for CD games as well. Any advice?

Everdrive, PCE converter, PCE Arcade system card, and a CD burner.

are you collecting for the TurboGrafx, PC Engine or both?

I would go with PCE if the game prices are your concern. There are still a ton of PCE games on ebay under 10 bucks. Next thing you know your collection will be more than 100 games very fast.

I have a region modded TG-16 and will have my DUO region modded soon. I know I don't need the converter but will I need the arcade system card? Also, you can just burn the games?

Sorry for double post. Saw this one after I sent previous. Thinking about getting the PCE versions of some of the more expensive TG games for now and will research the PCE exclusive games to see what to pick up.

If your turbo is region modded, why would you region mod your duo?

Arcade card will allow you to play everything.  Yes, you can burn the (CD) games.

My Turbo isn't AV modded. I'd like to have the best video quality. I did the region mod myself but don't feel comfortable mounting the jacks. Don't want to mess up the shell.

Uhhh.. Wasn't talking about AV mod. You said your tg16 was region modded and you were thinking about region modding the duo. There is no need to region mod both.

I want the best picture quality. DUO has AV outs while TG is RF only. I might build up the courage to AV mod the TG and then I won't have to mod the other. Hope that clarifies my thoughts. Not even sure I know what I mean. Haha

Although technically johnnymad can play all games with what he has (short of ACD games), it makes sense to mod the Duo because right now his TG16 only has RF out.

If you want to avoid modding a second system, then you could always buy a Turbobooster or mod the output of your TG16, but then you have to worry about switching between two different systems.  You are probably better off modding the Duo and then selling the TG16 or trading it to get some more games / Everdrive.

Get a booster, booster plus, or cd unit that will add your AV outs and let you save games :-)

I did such a crap job region modding it that I wouldn't feel comfortable selling the TG-16. I mean it works, but still wouldn't want it to go to someone else. Should probably just man up and do the AV mod as well.

boosters are very expensive. You can have someone mod your turbo for three times less the cost of buying a booster.

You guys are just like NEC, you just want me to keep spending money. :)

I hear this works for an AV mod but I've never tried it.  You may want to give it a shot?

I made a similar cable but didn't use a PC cable. Didn't like how it was bending the pins. This version looks to be more stable. Might give it a try. Thanks!

Ignore these ijits that think region modding your Duo is dumb.  They don't know shit.

Flashcarts and CDRs are great for try-before-you-buy, but CDRs may or may not work well on your Duo.  When you find a game you like, don't be afraid to get the PCE version if it's cheaper (sometimes they aren't), but I'd pay a bit more if necessary for the handful of games where english text is needed/helpful.

I just read that the Everdrive may not work with a region modded system. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

I believe some have had problems and many have not.  There are no guarantees either way.

Searched the forum after my previous post and that's what it seems like. Guess I could always return it if I have issues.

Just bought the Everdrive so I'll be good on HuCard games for a while (once it arrives from Germany). I have $65 in my paypal account that I'd like to spend on one or more Turbografx CD game(s).  Only CD game I have at the moment is Sherlock Holmes. I've been thinking about picking up Gate of Thunder but the only one online that I can afford at the moment is incomplete. Any recommendations besides GoT?

Lords of Thunder, Dragon Slayer, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Exile, Ys Book 1 & 2, Ys 3, Valis 2, Valis 3... the list goes on. Lots of great CD titles out there

Incomplete how?  GoT came on a 3 in 1 disc in a white CD case with 3 manuals (no box or case art). If you're after a <$65 CD shooter game, you may want to explore the PCengine library.

Oh, was not aware of that. Thanks!

also - don't let collecting be your guide. Hunt down stuff you want to play and play it. Don't worry about the rest. Fun games are fun.

That's the plan for this system. Sometimes I spend more time hunting for NES games than I actually spend playing them and some of the games downright suck. Don't want that to be the case for the Turbo. Once my Everdrive comes in, I plan on playing them all and doing some kind of simple review. Will probably review them on DoxPhile since there's already a thread for each game.

I had a sneaky suspicion that you might be cool.
Did you pay him to say that? :P
