Title: TG games in the wild?
Post by: johnnymad on August 05, 2014, 12:01:17 PM
I'm constantly stopping at thrift stores and flea markets looking for video games. Been checking stores for about 8 years but really only started focusing on games the past 3 or so. Have found games for many systems and the consoles themselves but never anything TG related. Any of you guys find anything good out there?

That's what I figured. Thought I saw a map somewhere that showed NEC/TTI only marketed to those areas. I'll still keep looking though. Hope others chime in who have actually found things out there so I can live vicariously through them. Haha.

To be perfectly honest with you, I haven't found any turbo stuff in the wild not since the 90s. Retro Gaming Stores sure, but then again you will be paying out of the arse 90% of the time with them and at that point you might as well go to ebay. I will say the stuff I did find at my local pawn shop will make some of you laugh and cry at the same time. Lots and lots of cases with mismatched games, a turbo tap, 5 new turbo sticks, and the legendary tg-16 to duo converter. I can't recall what I paid for all of that, but the turbo sticks were like $10 a piece.

I'll be sure to ask if I see him on there. I've been going through all your magazine scans over there and soaking up all the info. Found a code to use three ships at once on Galaga in one of them.

Went to a new game store about 40 minute drive from my house .. as someone on a retro games group claimed they had some Turbo Grafx.  Yeah they had one cic Dragon Spirit for $85, and a loose TG-16 console minus backing for $200.  I just laughed at the guy and walked out. It's seriously slim picking, and the retail stores, supposed flea markets (that are just retailer in disguise), and eBayers are sitting on stock for just absurd prices. Turbo Everdrive is my new little buddy, as I can sit back and collect as reasonable deals present themselves.

I'm in the Chicago area and can't find much. I make my daily craigslist search but nothing too extensive.

I do however have my gift cards ready for some sealed Turbo games, whenever the time arises ;)

Only Turbo find in years has been a measly Turbo RF switch.

Syphic must be grabbing all the Turbo stuff in California.  That guy has had some crazy scores.

You never know what will turn up in Thrift stores. I haven't really dug deep through them with any regularity in the past 10 years, things that interested me seemed to get more sparse, and the internet took up the slack (ebay, etc).

For that stuff to turn up at a thrift store, it would have to be someone dumping something they don't know the value of, due to that person not knowing or it being a person's "estate" being dumped.

Even once it gets to a thrift store, a lot of stuff seems to get checked by those thrift stores, against prices online, and if it's something of a certain value, placed on that goodwill's auction site, ebay, etc.

Sometimes things slip through. For example, this year I purchased a book from a long dead author for $4 shipped. I examined the book when it arrived, and it turns out the book had an actual autograph inside it. I guess the goodwill missed that. Whomever donated it, they must have missed/forgotten about it, or it was part of someone's book collection being dumped by relative/whomever.

I'm keeping the book, but it's interesting to know I ended up with a book I could get at least $100 for, for only $4.

*edited to add;

Probably, better for finding this stuff in the wild now, would be yard sales, estate sales, and though it's now on TV, storage lockers. There was a particular member here, years ago, ended up with a locker full of new Sega CD, 32X games and such, due to a storage locker.

In the very late 90s, I want to say 1998 or 1999, before ebay really took off, I found quadrun for the Atari 2600, cart only, in the wild. It was an old guy, selling misc stuff at a community flea market. He had a box of Atari 2600 stuff. Leftover from his son who went to college, then away on his own. It was a good price, so I bought the box of system and games.

It's out there, Slinky. The last time I found TG-16 stuff in the wild, was early 2000's. All I recall very clearly, was going through a thrift store's CDs, and finding Neutopia. I already had it, and either sometime later sold it on or off ebay.

A time I clearly recall finding a lot of TG-16 in the wild, was late 90s, someone had a set, with CD add-on, maybe a dozen games, but wanted too much for it. I do recall that person's table also had the, "Cool as Ice" VHS for sale, along with various other VHS titles I don't recall the titles of. Cool as Ice is the only memorable movie from that pile, because by then, Vanilla Ice was not so cool.

I came across World Class Baseball and TV Sports Hockey for a buck a piece at a game store one, and that's about it.

Actually, I did see someone at a con selling a bunch of boxed games, but you'll never guess what prices he was charging :P

I went looking for a copy of Blazing Lazers this weekend at a bunch of used game stores.  Every store had a copy or 10 of Kieth Courage, there were a couple of TV Sports games and a Drop Off.  That was about it.

Really depends on how much you want to narrow it down. I've been looking through garage sales, secondhand shops, flea markets, etc since 1990. Not much I haven't found, but I've seen way more PC Engine stuff than Turbo.

The only time I have ever seen used TG-16 stuff for sale was when Phar-Mor went out of business and they sold off all of their rental games.

Rental stores...

I don't count my decent rental score, as, "wild". More similar to a canned hunt, of a non-sought after animal that had been overbred. I knew where it was, and I knew when it disappeared from the menu there. It was so far gone, they couldn't rent it, or sell it to the general public, yet didn't want to throw it all out. I pretty much put that TG-16 stuff out of it's misery in a more humane manner than the dumpster.

The site is no longer online, but I have a scan of a print-out from 2006, of a Video store salvage, that ended up from me, to one guy, who then sold it to Bullseye (Unless it was Bullseye).

This was one of the few instruction manuals worn out. Makes sense, it was Order of the Griffon;

Wow, time is passing. Just to sum up the above. When I sold that copy (The rental store had two of that title), I sold it as-is, pics represented, $0.00 starting auction. I forget what I sold it for in 03, 04 or so, but I had no negative feedback, somehow it ended up with the notorious Bullseye, who misrepresented it. I Found that posting,I think through this board, then laughed, because it originated from me. From TTI, to Video Nation, to MrFulci, to ..............

The last games I saw in the wild (at a local used game store) were a couple loose TV Sports something just before x-mas of last year.  I don't know how much they wanted for 'em and didn't ask.

C'mon, Nullity. I've been vacant for a while, but, if not familiar, long story short, he was a reseller on ebay, horrible 90% of the time, sold stuff like, "strategy guides", which were nothing much different than the pic of a printed sheet I just posted.

If you missed out, you missed nothing much. He was what makes not TG-16, or "retro" game selling/trading, just anything, horrible. He took advantage, not just out of little stuff, but made it his business. When you make your business, 90%, of scamming your customers, that's bad. Why not be legit, at LEAST, most of the time.

Only turbo stuff I've ever found in the "wild" (ie-thrift or garage sale) was a single Turbo Tap at the ARC.  That was like 2 years ago.  There were a couple retro stores around me with decent selection that slowly got picked over though.

Slinky, I got this contained!

Vic-20 in the box. Picked up the monitor that goes with it months ago. Makes me wonder if a guy on a
Vic-20 forum was just bitching about not finding any Vic-20 stuff in the wild stumbled across a TG today...

I have a local shop that I visit every so often and I must have timed it just right. Someone brought in a stack of turbo cd and hu's. The kid behind the counter had no idea as too what was just traded in and I asked how much for the whole lot. He responds with ( this is some oddball system that never went anywhere"s, so give me $100). Now mind you he never looked up any of the games before giving me that price. When he laid out the 10 games I almost could not believe my luck. We had in the pile

Dungeon explorer 2
Legend of heroes
Valis 3
Lords of thunder
Camp California sealed
Dead moon
Air zonk
Darkwing Duck
Bonk 2
R-type

I did not even think twice about. Gave him my money and number telling him to call me if he got anymore turbo stuff in. As I was leaving I heard the manager come over and ask what I just bought. The kid told him and the price. The mangers face turned beat red and just watched me leave. I'm thinking that someone might be out of a job....

Great find man! Was this recent? That was epic to say the least! Its such a great moment, the whole back story with the manager catching the tail end of it and turning beat read, truly classic. I wish all of us could find stuff like that, you were really lucky that day. I always wonder about turbo stuff just laying in some thrift store or in some storage locker or warehouse somewhere. If only we could track it like gps lol Somebody needs to invent a hucard detector lol

I don't think I have found any Turbo stuff in the wild since the early 2000's.  I check the thrifts for records still and once in a while I will look at games, but all the stuff showing up in the last couple years is Xbox, PS2, Wii, DS and GCN.  No classics at all...

That was a recent find... Sometimes you just have dumb luck. They funny part was that I almost never go there anymore and on that day something told me too. Like most of you I am stuck buying on e-bay. So going to stores is almost a waste of time nowadays. Sorry hailing no Dungeon for you! It's mine! You can't have it! I have actually missed some epic sales there by not going in more often. I have a friend local that goes there and he picked up Hero tonma boxed, turrigan boxed, and bonk 3 boxed for $150! I live just outside of Toronto .. a very diverse city, with a large chinese and moderately sizes japanese population.

I grew up near Ottawa but recall coming to Toronto on family vacations as a young teenager. There were a ton of Game stores that exclusively told Import consoles, accessories and games.

There just has to be more than an average amount of this stuff sitting in people's basements, attics, or garages.  I want to start doing like on the TV show American Pickers.  Print out a sheet of the type of systems I play and want to collect for .. then go knocking door to door asking, and handing out the list with my contact information.

I've never gotten lucky walking into a Garage Sale or Yard Sale (always seniors selling old people stuff) ... always strike out at Thrift Stores, Pawn Shops etc.  But have done fairly well recently with some focuses searches on local online Classified Ads (found SGX/PCE GT/games bundle, and more recently PCE Duo-R/games bundle)

It's out there, and most of the people that have it sitting around have zero use for it .. and would likely part with it if you can convince them to dig those boxes out of storage. At least that is what I keep trying to tell myself .. but maybe it's just wishful thinking

I want to be that guy that walked into my Garage Sales when I was in my late teens and selling my entire TG-16, minty and all cib in order to raise money for a PC build.

I ask that people continue to share their wild finds .. as it keeps the rest of us hoping

Necro, I thought you wanted to play nice? If I am joking with someone, then it is just that a joke. I could care less if people think I am a collectard or not. If you don't want me to come at you with a sharp stick then don't toss stones. You like to comment on threads that I am present on and I try to make it a point not to do so on the ones you comment on. Now if a stone is cast in the water first, I will throw a stick at you. See now I was all ready to give you a hug and here we are...
Title: Re: TG games in the wild?

Hailing, I never said that you thought I was a collectard. Others here have branded me as one. No matter though, I collect and play what I like. However I guess if you have more than one title of something or have something in the box new you are dubbed COLLECTARD! That's the way it has come across to me from others stand point....

Those who might think of you as a collectard would be less inclined to do so if you didn't exclusively post in collecting/market related threads like this, with the occasional non game-playing thread in-between.

It also doesn't help that the only two non-commerce threads you've created were titled:

Quote
Raffle Magical Chase who would..

  and

copies known to exist of magical chase?

If you really are playing your games, then why not talk about them and share your experiences?

Did you end up managing to get a copy of Magical Chase for thousands of dollars as you were working towards? If so, what do you think of the game?

You aren't being singled out or bullied or anything. If you literally only talk about nu-collecting in a game fan forum that uses the term "collectard", why wouldn't you expect to be thought of as one?

Now tiger, how did I know that you would go to old threads to comment on this one? As I said I was joking with Hailing. Yes I play my games, it does not mean I talk about doing so. I do a lot more reading on here than actually posting. You already know that I have chase. I have stated it in previous posts. Is there a chance that the second chase post was in good fun? It's all good though.

Whistling, whistling, whistling, whistling, dark, dark, dark, dark...

I love the random brass band at the end of the song. Had to be an out take that they decided to keep.

Hailing, I never said that you thought I was a collectard. Others here have branded me as one. No matter though, I collect and play what I like. However I guess if you have more than one title of something or have something in the box new you are dubbed COLLECTARD! That's the way it has come across to me from others stand point....

Mister, Mister, let's just talk about adventures. How close to peeing yourself did you get the first time you made it to King Drool? I, myself, came really close. Had to use the facility  (if you know what i mean) like 2 times before I could face him, just to make sure he didn't enslave my urethra and command it to release my liquid fear. Oh me, oh my. :3

You're the one that won't let it go, buttercup, and it's not much of a joke when you go on and on about not being a collectard when nobody has brought it up but yourself.  It's pretty clear your posts were a dig, but perhaps someday you'll dry your tears and move on.

I'm constantly stopping at thrift stores and flea markets looking for video games. Been checking stores for about 8 years but really only started focusing on games the past 3 or so. Have found games for many systems and the consoles themselves but never anything TG related. Any of you guys find anything good out there?

I found my TG express at a yard sale about 2 years ago.
Near Mint with a TV tuner, they used it as a TV for hurricanes (Florida). Described the games to the woman and she said she had some and then when I called her a week later she told me she could find them online for me for a fee (Um, no lmao) and she did ebay.
Got it for $8 so can't complain though.

Other t5han that never seen any TG stuff EVER in the wild and only the most basic games at most games stores if they even have anything.
