Title: Last sealed Turbo Grafx game, or hardware, you opened
Post by: MrFulci on August 08, 2014, 03:00:52 PM
I was thinking about this, due to the homebrew game Arkhan is putting out there.

For me, the last sealed game I opened, for the Turbo Grafx 16, was Super Star Soldier, in 2006 or 2007 or so.

I already had one, but someone I had been dealing with before, I knew had some sealed games. I was seeing what stock he had left, and asked about SSS, we agreed on $50. I opened it when it arrived, then sold off my more worn copy. I forget what was awkward about that one, the box may have been sunbleached, or crushed. Maybe the instructions were well-worn?

I know, "Collectard" is a thing around here now, but back then, I did stuff like that on occasion Things would even out, or I'd just end up spending an extra $10-$20 or so after I sold the other copy. Plus I liked opening the sealed SSS, because even back then, it wasn't too easy to come by. I think most would have left it sealed, so I at least saved that copy from entombment in shrink-wrap for who knows how long.

For me, it was either Bravoman or Somer Assault. I got them from TZD.

I won an auction prob 2 years ago for 15 sealed TG games. They were all orange label games and i opened them all right away. So, 2 years ago. I think cratermaze might have been the last one.

Last one for me was Pyramid Plunder I think.  Non-indie was Monster Lair.

People care. I'm actually interested, why I made the thread. :)

Though I am guilty of having a few sealed games still around. Few, as in 5 or so. Nothing worth much, I paid something like $10 a piece for them, and until I got back on this board recently, I kinda forgot I still had them.

The pack-in with my Duo (Splatterhouse) is still sealed. I figure that's part of the system package when I got it from TZD, so, might as well keep it that way, inside the Duo's box. I had no reason to open it years ago, since I already owned it, and anyone else looking for a trade already had it, so it never got traded so it's sat in there for about 20 years. That was actually TZDs advice at the time, to trade it, I think I asked if I could exchange for another game or two.

Someone mentioned indie games here. For me that was Meteor Blaster. I wasn't around when Mysterious Song got released, I remember it being developed for a long time, and finally being released when I was taking a break from this board, and console games in general.

I opened a sealed Prince of Persia a couple days ago, and a sealed Exile back in the spring. Like you, I just slit the top of the shrinkwrap on the exile box so I could keep it with the wrap.

Lords of Thunder.  Actually, I'm not sure if it's open or not but I bought it sealed in like 2010 or so for $30.  I am planning to play through it one of these days, I swear! (15 year old me would have already done it) I also got an YS IV around that time also.

For me it was Splatterhouse at game launch. Walked into Radio Shack and bought it, couldn't get home fast enough to crack it open and play it.  Was the last game I bought new, during my teenage years.  Recollecting as an adult have not stumbled into a sealed game that wasn't drastically over priced.  And to pay sealed prices for something I know I will open and play .. rather just get cib/cic copies. I can't let anything sit sealed .. it must be played, otherwise I just don't get the point.

Went to the video game store i always go with Dragon spirit sealed. (3 months ago)

showed the game to my previous boss, the look in his eyes were saying that he wanted it..
and out of the blue i yelled : "YAY IT'S FREAKING CHRISMAS !@_@"
and ripped the plastic seal

the poor guy tryed to grab the game out of my hands but was too late,

the joy of opening a game that has been sealed for more then 20 years
the look on every clients faces,
my hysterical laugh.
that was such a priceless moment !

The last sealed Turbob was probably Monster Lair from Terry's crate buy three years ago.

Methinks the last PCE unsealing was Bazaru:

Turbob is some new PCEFX slang for me, I guess that is TG-16.

I did search recently, and saw someone sold a sealed Super Star Soldier on ebay for $300+.

and also some VGA graded stuff for $600+

I don't understand this graded stuff. It's stupid. Comics, I understand it a bit more.

All of it makes me more glad I opened my sealed copy in 2006, 2007 or so, the day it arrived to me for the $50 I spent. It's not a terribly common TG-16 game, so it allowed another open copy into the wild.

Blazing Lazers in last year. Got it from somebody in the UK who had a stack of these for a price of around 10 € per piece or so.

I still wonder why that person had so many of them. Have I been fooled? Anyway, I wanted this game for play, and this was the easiest and by the time cheapest option for me to get one with plastic case and manual.

From what I understand, that was the pack-in game in the UK.

Just the plastic breaking down!

I will say, and I'm sure I'm not the first, Blazing Lazers would have been a better pack-in, in the US, than Keith Courage.

Mine might have been Pyramid Plunder.  Cant remember which ones before that.  I still have a few sealed that I havent gotten around to opening like my very own group buy of Monster lair and Loom.  Just want to open them when I have time to sit down and dedicate some time to enjoying them.

Thats true Necro, Pyramid plunder wasnt sealed now that you mention it.  I have to really think about what the last game I had that I opened.

Edit: I think it was Meteor Blaster DX when they had the glass masters made.

My cordless PC Engine controller was brand new, taped up in a bag.  Really nice feel to play with a new controller.  Switching back to my older Turbo/PCE pads, I realize just how worn out they are.

Prior to that, some random games I bought/traded 10+ years ago (Final Lap Twin, Neutopia II, Fantasy Zone, etc.)....I had these games as a kid (loose) and wanted to see the whole enchilada. I have a loose Bomberman, too, since I was kiddie, but I don't remember if I ever got the box/case/manual.

Esteban,

Great you did that for x-mas :). It's a good video.

I never made a video of myself opening a game, however I did take pictures when I opened a sealed Dynastic Hero, many years ago. It was a bit pricey then, for a sealed one, but the price was not insane.

I bought Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Exile from Working Designs when they were still in business, about 10 years ago. They arrived new, I opened them both, and then played them through.

I may still have the invoice tucked away with my TG-16 papers, but from what I recall, the price was reasonable, maybe $30 each?

I didn't have either of those games until I finally bought them from Working Designs direct. During the 90s, I didn't get CD capability 'til late in the system's life. Most of the CD games I bought were direct through TZD. TZD never had any of the Working Designs stuff, from what I recall.

Back in 2011 when I first started collecting TurboGrafx stuff, I saw an add on kijiji, around 30 games and a boxed console going for $160.
Ran like hell to pick it up obviously lol, and half the games had the box, three were sealed, a tennis game, Cyber Core and Bonks Revenge, I opened them all and now am regretting it.

Yeah, I know, right?

If you guys even knew that I bought them because they were reduced to $1.99. My wife tried to stop me and I promised her, "Don't worry, I'll never where them. They will be my emergency backup pair of pajama pants. Trust me."

I've been wearing them every day since.

Lol, being cool is everything though aha, where do I make my introduction???

Search for "awkward introduction" and just create a new thread following this formula:

(1) profess love for TG-16/PCE
(2) don't openly display collectard tendencies (wait until you've gained some credibility)
(3) mention something about future plans (a game you will continue playing, a Japanese PCE magazine you will scan for me, etc.)
(4) do you have a favorite genre, or aspect of video gamedom you particularly enjoy...
(5) seabloon.
(6) ghostcloth.
