Title: Robin Williams, dead at 63
Post by: nodtveidt on August 11, 2014, 12:28:50 PM
f*ck. One of the greatest of our time. Apparent suicide. This sucks. :( Seemed like it was a hoax at first, but it apparently isn't.

WOW that sucks, I have seen him live a few times and he was awesome. He was one of the few great comics of our generation. He will with out a doubt be missed. One has to wonder why someone so successful would take his own life, I know we don't know what was going on in his personal life but nothing can be so bad to make one want to do that...........so sad.... RIP Robin.

He had been battling depression and drug abuse for a long time, that is certainly known. Neither are respecters of either fame or fortune, of which he had much.

Awful news. Still hope it's not true.

Edit: coroner report above. Guess that's it. :(

This hit me like a ton of bricks this evening. I was in a store and the cashier who told us seemed more concerned with sharing gossip than actually being sad for the world's loss. Is it bad that i wanted to punch her in the forehead? ^^f*ck (!) indeed.

Not everyone will share the same sense of loss. This hit me pretty hard as well, especially after I heard that it might be a hoax. Still, some people just don't care, and that's fine, really... it takes all kinds.

I always liked Robin Williams,  but his performances in RV and Father of the Year really endeared him to me as a favorite. I don't feel a sense of loss as I did with Kurt Vonnegut, but far more than most celebs/artists.

what are some of your favorite Robin Williams movies? Let's celebrate his life by enjoying his work, eh?

Jumanji
One Hour Photo (f*cking creeeeeeeeeeeepy)
Mrs. Doubtfire
Jack

Hit me like a ton of bricks as well. He's one of those names that I never expected to see in some headline like this. I grew up watching his movies.

And I loved watching his videos with his daughter Zelda. That's so sad. I'm feeling pretty bummed now. Man.

@Mathius- I can't stand that. A couple people I work with kept trying to figure out if it was this or that and blah blah. I'd want to punch her as well.

Jack was my favorite. Was totally convincing playing a 10 year old in a 40 year old body. Was also great when he was a senior in high school...and in his life.

Why Robin Williams?  Why?  You were one of us:  you bought an NES, a huge TV and named your daughter Zelda.  So much talent. Goodwill Hunting, Aladdin...so sad.  Anyone on the street could have told you how much you meant to them....  :(

It's been years since I've watched Good Morning, Vietnam.  Think I will squeeze that in before bed tonight.

Very sad that someone who made making others laugh appear to effortless, was fighting so much inside of himself. I know he had publicly discussed battles with drugs and alcohol .. and there were talks of recent depression. So unfortunate that someone couldn't make him feel .. how so many felt about him. RIP funny man.

Nanu Nanu !

I thought his comedy was forced and un funny and he had a horrible reputation among comics as a joke thief.  That said he is amongst the greatest serious actors I have ever seen, especially in awakenings.  I am not sure he was acting when he displayed pain he really was a tortured soul.  Not really funny to ME but my god an amazing actor.

Watched Bicentennial Man recently, didn't think I'd have to miss such a funny guy so soon. I hope the newest "Night At The Museum" movie isn't the last thing that he did before he passed.

This hurts. Seriously.

I remember watching Good Morning Vietnam and, even as a young kid, being moved; knowing this guy was special. And the first time I ever cried in a theater, I'm not ashamed to say, was during the, "It's not your fault" scene of Goodwill Hunting. My dad was sitting right next to me, with tears in his eyes as well.

Robin Williams was a treasure. An absolutely wonderful artist. He put everything he had into his work. He was captivating. I didn't always love the stuff he was in, but I always loved him. I'm so sad that he's gone. He was just one of those guys that I always took for granted. I thought he'd always be there. It's a terrible tragedy, but I'm thankful to him for all the joy he brought the world.

Goooooooood mooorniiiiing Vietnaaam!

I literally just watched Hook a couple months ago, the first time with my nephew, who's at that age where he can't really appreciate it (14). But the wife and I and other family members watched it with more than just nostalgia.

I'm only a little surprised nobody has mentioned Mork and Mindy. That more than anything defined Robin Williams.

Another unmentioned gem was The Birdcage. And of course, who could forget his role-defying stints in Death to Smoochy and 24 Hour Photo? Even if the latter wasn't that great, Robin Williams was so much more than just that stand up comic who played funny roles hilariously.

RIP

Wow, just returned to computer this morning, and reading about this, that happened while I was away.

All I can say, is if anyone here is not familiar with his stand-up, give that stuff a look sometime. I liked his stand-up, and film work.

Huh, I knew he named his daughter after Legend of Zelda (and was a huge fan of that game), but I didn't realize he was such a huge gamer overall. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I just learned about his love of "The Legend of Zelda" too, having even named his daughter Zelda, and saw the first commercial he did for Nintendo. I believe it was from a FB post that ragtime shared. But yeah, pretty cool!

Anyhow, it's tragic and like Dennis Miller said, if even someone like Robin Williams could get to that dark place and actually go through with it, anybody ca, etc. I didn't understand it when I was younger, but I guess you gotta live life long enough to do so, rack up enough regrets, mistakes, setbacks, failures, etc.

I never knew that he names his daughter Zelda or was into Nintendo.....

As for depression and suicidal ideology I can relate....I struggle with that, mostly from my multiple tours of duty in Iraq ........  It took me a long LONG time to even accept help let along acknowledge that yes I do have PTSD .....

but with the support of my wife, family, friends, and having my dog (and protector) nearby me I feel stronger than ever.

Ah, a military veteran. Yeah, suicide rate is high in your line of work... Homicide rate as well. ;)

Glad you made it back in one piece. Hope readjusting to civilian life continues to go well. :/

Thank you for your service! And glad you're dealing with all the issues that come from living that type of life while on tour. I had a friend who went to Iraq and had a hard time readjusting to normal life. He'd wake up in the middle of the the night and hop on the lawnmower and start cutting the grass. Didn't even realize what he was doing. Roommates had to wake him up. Crazy.

So who here would want to see Robin made int a character for a Zelda game?

In many ways I could see this as being a very touching tribute.  In others it may seem in poor taste and ham fisted.

I think in the end...the family and creator of Zelda (I'd name him but spelling ehhh....) oh he'll Myomoto. Lol...

Would need to agree..it isn't really something Nintnedo could just say yes to....they would need the ok for the family to utilize his likeness I would imagine.  Plus who is to say Japan would  want a beloved game franchises stamped with an American actor just because American fans say so?

I don't know...I think IF it were to happen it would need to tie in the father daughter aspect....for another it would need to be done with a lot of thought class and sudalty. Hitch may seem as an odd phrase when mentioning Robin as someone who was known for being sudal.  Although when he wanted to do a serious movie he really could.

The first movie of his I saw was Popeye.  It's the first movie I remember watching in a movie theater. I must have been 5. It may not be one of his better movies, but I've never forgotten that experience! Nearly 35 years later he is still one of the most entertaining people I've seen.
