Title: The Best Import TG-16/CD Games
Post by: ctophil on August 12, 2014, 09:47:12 AM
Hi, everybody
I haven't focused on collecting TG-16 and CD games for the past 10 years. So now, I'm starting to increase my collection. The U.S. game selection is pretty slim. Can you guys recommend the best import-only titles you can think of for the regular TG-16 and Turbo CD? Maybe your Top 10 import games or something like that? It could be of any genre. Thanks!

Thanks guys for the lists. I forgot about Snatcher being on PC Engine. I'll probably have to get that one, since the Sega CD version is ultra expensive. I might have to read the English translations from the Internet while playing the game though. I know you can play it on emulation. But I would rather play a game on the original hardware.
Ys IV is a must too. I heard it was a great game, not to mention the fantastic music.

Just incase you werent aware, the is a translated Ys IV ROM floating around on the net. Im sure you could find it on The Internet I know you want to own the original hardware for collector's sake, but instead of reading translations, you could get the patched ROM and play that on your console still

Do not post links to isos/roms.

I enjoy Spriggan, Download 2, and Gomola Speed. The pc engine version of Sega's Shinobi is pretty sweet too.

Ha! I did not know this. One of these years I'll have to check that out.

That's a good idea. I still want to own the original import game. So I'll buy that and then play the translated version(s) on emulator via PC and/or on my Turbografx-CD.
I just bought a complete copy of Castlevania Dracula X on Ebay for $118! Good price for the nice condition. Usually, for a mint copy of Dracula X would be like $130+. Not bad for the second Turbo CD game I ever owned. lol.

Shinobi sounds like a good idea. I loved the arcade version. I later played the Tengen Shinobi on NES, and everything about the game was annoying (graphics, music, and ninja magic looked lame). I'll definitely put Shinobi on my list of games to get.
Speaking of cool arcade-style games, anybody play Batman and Double Dragon II for PC Engine? If so, how do they compare to the other versions?

Double Dragon II (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/2014/04/double-dragon-ii-revenge.html) is very good but based on the NES version and not the arcade original. Batman (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/2009/02/batman.html) is also dang good, but it's nothing like the other Batman games.

Worth it for the tunes alone!

Ys IV is pretty cheap and Nightwolve has a nice utility for ripping the game and patching it into English text and English dub. This would be the "right" way to do it.

Yep. Back in April/May of this year I picked up Ys IV shipped for $15. I'd seen it for less off and on but money's been tight. Once I picked up the official game I started playing the English translation and it's been awesome! Even my 6 yr old is hooked.

There's a shit ton of threads on this topic, but I always post the same thing. . . Double Dragon II SCD for PCE is a fantastic import. Just kind of getting pricy unfortunately

I was critical of Double Dragon II SCD when I initially got it, but I've been loving it more and more over the years. It started with me falling in love with the soundtrack....but that's a tale for another thread...

The most common complaint I hear about the game, and the series as a whole, is the platforming elements later in the game. They're definitely hard and take some practice and patience, but with a little due diligence anyone can get past them.
And that soundtrack though...

I beat Double Dragon II (NES, fantastic game) so I was OK, but I can see folks forgetting frustrated at several points in the game.
Soundtrack....

Other than the PCE port, the original NES trilogy really can't be beat as far Double Dragon games go, and I've beaten damn near every console version released (and holy hell are there a lot of them) except for:
Double Dragon on Genesis (shit unlicensed port of the original arcade classic), Double Dragon II on Japanese Mega Drive (shit port of the arcade sequel that is rare, expensive, and not worth the $100+ price tag), and Double Dragon III on Genesis (see a pattern forming here?)
Even though I have played and completed them, I don't really count Double Dragon V or the Neo Geo Double Dragon (based off that hilariously bad movie from the 90s) as part of the "classic" series of Double Dragon.
And just for shits and gigs:

We are of like minds because I love the NES games...I tried the SMS and Genesis and ________ (wasn't there Gameboy stuff? It wasn't good).
As for soundtrack, I'll have to dig up an old post....

Oh yeah, I loved Double Dragon II on NES. I beat it only once but played it a couple of dozen times. It was a very challenging game as you guys know. Most of the challenge though was getting knocked off disappearing platforms later on in the game, and the punks gang up on you when playing single player. The first Double Dragon was okay. I didn't like it too much. Double Dragon III was a mess. lol. It's just weird and much harder than the second one.
I will surely put Double Dragon II for PC Engine CD on my list next to see why you guys are raving about the soundtrack. Because I like my games when good music.

I personally enjoy the SMS version (not as much as the NES versions of course), and the first Double Dragon port on Gameboy is actually a pretty fun play through considering it's an original Gameboy title. II and III on the Gameboy are just as shit as I'm sure you're remembering them.
However, the undisputed champ of "Piss-Poor Double Dragon Port" has to go to the Game Gear version. It's a downright bizarre port that features all new character/level design, guns as pick ups, and some of the worst controls imaginable.

Double Dragon III is definitely a tough as shit game, but that AVGN review gave it way too harsh of a reputation. The controls are pretty spot on (once you get the intricacies of the game down), the graphics and music are absolutely top notch for the system, and the learning curve is pure old-school gaming at its finest. Only the most dedicated players will see the ending of that game, and I'm definitely okay with that.
