Title: PS4 or Xbox One
Post by: johnnymad on August 14, 2014, 04:50:49 PM
Would like to get some advice from any of you that have one, or both, consoles. I have a PS3 now but the next versions of my favorite games, Assassin's Creed Unity and Arkham Knight, are only next gen. There are exclusives from both systems that I'd like to play, but nothing really pushes me over the edge. Loved the Infamous games so wouldn't mind playing the PS4 one and I haven't played a Halo game since Halo 2. The Master Chief collection will help me cover the ones I've missed and Titan Fall also looks great. Have reasons to pick up both, but still over a small library of games.
PS4 isn't backwards compatible and I don't own any 360 games so that is not an issue. Will be until October or so before I pick one up, so it might come down to a price drop/sale or bundle that makes the decision easier. Any suggestions?

oh no...not the "vs." again.

I have a PS4. Got it on launch day. Bought Killzone. Good enough game. The console just pissed me off though.
No 3D capability until a month or 2 ago (not a huge deal, but 3D on the PS3 for a long time) No media server capability. (still using my PS3 or my smart TV for that. PS3 ports on the PS4 (so why did I buy the next system when I can play the same games on PS3) No backwards compatibility (just kinda suck, not that it is an industry standard) No killer games....still! (Some good games for sure, but nothing new to really showcase the device)
I'm waiting for Destiny to make my decision on whether to turf it or not. I still play my PS3 all the time though.
My wife at least plays the Lego games on my PS4 otherwise, wouldn't get used.
Don't know anything about the Xbone. I know is originally cost more. Easy purchase decision then.

I should probably change that. Was thinking that when I initially started this. Not so much a vs. thing. I think "or" is probably the word I was looking for.

Home console gaming died for me when they introduced downloadable content. No goddamn reason a $60 game shouldn't be complete right out of the box. I say take option three and don't waste your money on new consoles that really, just aren't all that much more impressive than the ones that preceded them. I say explore an older system that is new to you.

At this point, there's not enough exclusive to warrant a purchase for either.Id say you're better off holding out until later on.

I am very happy with my Xbox One. Games like Titanfall are ridiculously fun. And I have Destiny pre-ordered.
Most people prefer the PS4 though.

Wait until something released on either console really excites you. In between now and when that special game is released, the price of the system will drop, or you might get a free pack-in game bundle.
I did this last gen and it was very rewarding. I was able to bring $35 into a gamestop years into the PS3 lifecycle and walk out with 7 good dirt cheap games. The price of the system had fallen by half at that point, so I think it was a pretty good value. For me the only game series that will push me over the edge will be Fallout, which I still play weekly.

AC Unity and Batman do excite me, but that's about it. Only maybe 3 or 4 games total are out for each system that I actually want to play and only a couple are exclusive to each system. If Unity and Batman were on PS3, I wouldn't even be considering a PS4. Have to pay to play...or wait, which I'm not good at.

Out of the two only PS4 mildly interests me, f*ck Microsoft and their shit practices...
Wii U is a blast, and should not be unconsidered pretty much the best current gen platform for overall gaming as odd as that is...lol

I'd wait a bit longer, if I were you. I've got a PS4 and bought it at launch. While I do like it, and while I think PS+ is a great value, I have exactly ONE retail game: Wolfenstein. I had Killzone, Assassin's Creed, Knack, and Tomb Raider, but once I finished them I had no incentive to hold on to them. And frankly, those games weren't that great to begin with.
There are some great indies and downloadables, and many of those are free with PS+. But honestly, I don't see a killer app yet. Destiny is coming, but that's multiplatform. I think Driveclub and Little Big Planet 3 are the only exclusives I'm interested in this fall...unless I'm forgetting something.
But it seems like everything is hitting in 2015, so I think you're probably good waiting until then.

I'm holding off on either purchase, and to be totally frank, I'm probably not going to buy either until like 2016 when they're $200 or less (unless something really grabs my attention before then).
I never have time any more to sink 50+ hours into a game, and if I do it's probably going to be part of my backlog of stuff from PCE and PS1/2 eras.

I love my Wii U. I believe the past few AC and Batman games were released for it. Not this time. :(

Eh, I'd save my money for retro games and consoles. There aren't anything out there worth buying a next-gen console, except for Nintendo titles. So I'm sticking with Wii U (although I don't own one yet). If you REALLY have to pick between PS4 or Xbox One, I would choose the PS4, simply because Sony got it right this generation. So everybody and their moms are going to support the system. There will be many games on the PS4, both exclusive and multi-platform.
But as for me, I just bought a Turbografx-CD system last month. So, I'm going to stick with that for a long while. Hehe.

You mean, Nihon Falcom? Then, you should go with PS3/PS4 and Vita then. Because they have been on Sony's consoles (and the PC) for a very long time and for the foreseeable future. I love Ys and Legend of Heroes (playing it on PSP right now) myself.

I have both and I'd say the following pros exist:
PS4 1.) MLB 2.) More powerful system. 3.) PS+ is great.
XB1 1.) Better exclusive games (Dead Rising, Killer Instinct, Forza, Titan Fall, soon Halo). 2.) Controller is better, though the PS4 is leaps and bounds better than PS3. 3.) Have seen some cheap deals for bundles lately, without Kinnect.

Thanks for that. Was hoping someone had both and would chime in. Still no clue which to eventually get, but will keep your insight in mind.

With Microsofts console sales, if I were to buy a system it would be the PS4 solely based on playing the numbers. That system will have the longest lifespan of the three current consoles therefore I expect it to have the most expansive library...Also God of War games, I am in awe of.

Never got into any of the God of War games. Might try them out one day.
I'll probably just end up getting a PS4 and hang on to my PS3 to play all the games I missed on it.

Seriously get into the God of War games! The story is amazing -movie worthy. The graphics are amazing and really showed what the ps2 could do (they were rereleased on PS3). There is a dungeon in the first one that I honestly can't think of another dungeon in any game I've ever played that I thought was just as perfect as it is. From the layout to the enemies/bosses contained to level of difficulty. Every aspect of it was just perfect. It darkly rewrites greek mythology in an absolutely believable way. It was engrossing. I truly cannot heap enough praise on these games. GET THEM!

Wii U.... way more worthy games at this point and it cheaper to boot! Dont listen to the naysayers speaking doom and gloom on the Wii U... its good stuff!

I can't stand the PS4 Controller (left analog stick in the wrong, unnatural place) and the Xbone controller (Xbox 360 controller feels so much better in hands).
I also think Nintendo messed slightly up the Wii U Pro controller by swapping the location of the right hand face buttons and secondary analog stick.

I like the DS3 with my PSP Go, but I've not used a DS4 yet. What's wrong with the DS3 that's been fixed on DS3?
The triggers are substantially better and the weight feels better.
I actually much preferred the DS3 to the 360 controller and when I go the PS4, I thought the DS4 was essentially the same. However, after a few months of playing PS4, I went back to play some PS3 and I was blown away by how poorly the DS3 felt in comparison.

Ah then, you have wii u and presumably PCE / TG16. Life is complete. Search no further.
Haha. I guess it's settled then. Carry on. :)

Honestly... I don't like either one of them. I decided on the PS4, but I only use it to watch Netflix. I think I may be just getting tired of recent video games, because I just seem to have no interest in the newer stuff.

When I decide to jump into next gen it will be with PS4. MS really chapped my ass with all of their stupid policies and then all the back peddling prior to release. To be honest though I am still completely satisfied with my 360. The libraries for the new consoles still suck.
Also, for me there is not a big enough difference to warrant spending the money. Back in the day each new generation of consoles provided a huge leap forward in sound and visuals. Now the difference is so incremental its almost negligible. They're making new hardware just to make it now, and keep the revenue stream flowing. They knew hardcore gamers would buy it no matter what. IMHO the PS3 and 360 had a lot more shelf life left in them.

Seems like the consensus is to go with the PS4. Was already leaning towards it but this thread pushed me over the edge. I agree that the library of each next generation system is lacking but hopefully with time they'll grow. Still won't get to play Halo, but I'll live.

I was wii and 360 owner last gen. I already have a wii U and most likely get a xbone later on. At the moment I got no reason to jump on ps4 xbone at the moment.
Still need to go through my pc engine, saturn, xbox 360, wii, 3DS catalogue of games....

I currently have a PS4 and a Wii U (and a bunch of old school systems).
I am debating right now on the trade in 360 for $100 offer from Microsoft, bringing a basic Xbox One system to only $250. I don't play the 360 at all anymore, I didn't get a huge library of games, and what I have left I could sell on ebay. The Trade in from Microsoft is just core system, AV / power cables and a controller.
What do you guys think? Is it stupid to get a Xbox One when I already have a PS4? Talk me out of this if it is a bad move. =)

I have seen no reason to get an Xbox One yet. For that matter I can hardly justify having bought the PS4. Right now the Wii U seems like the best bang for you buck. Lots of good games and less moneys.

man you missed out on that white sunset overdrive bundle, I think it's sold out in the USA. I just beat the game around the 20 hour mark and now going back to do the rest of the side quests. The online aspect is pretty good too.
main downside with these current gen systems is they require really big patches and updates... 15gb update for halo master chief collection and you can't play the game until it's been downloaded and updated. Think I am passing on that >___>

With the announcement of PS TV, I will most likely pick up a PS4 over the holidays. What I save on my cable bill will pay for the console within a couple of months. I've been looking to cut the cable for a while now.
The GTA / Last of Us holiday bundle is pretty alluring.
I will not buy the Xbone period. Microsoft burned the trust bridge with me with all their policy shenanigans pre release. They'll have to practically give it away for me to give up coveted shelf space for one.

Wii U fine if you want the first party games still it's 3rd party support has been rather crappy.
