Yeah , started tonight playing the TurboDuo version. 8)
..the music in this game is pure delight.
But there is something weird that seem ...out of place.
That intro you see at the begining of the game...
i made fun of the cover of the game thinking , oh wow, 'MURICA.
but seeing the exact same image in the intro i felt confuse...
it seem the artworks used at the begining dont match with the actual game's image/animation
that you get after you start a game
....and that blond guy ... #-o
someone has played the original japanese game on pc engine ?
is this the exact same intro ? :-k

Yes, it's the exact same. It's depicting an ancient legend.

Oh yeah! I've gone back'n'forth on which soundtrack is at the top of the list of the Ys series on this system, and Ys III had the spot for a time. What happens is, you over listen to one soundtrack, get a little sick of it, then listen to the other and then that becomes your favorite of the series, etc. Rinse and repeat. Like right now, Ys IV seems to be a bit enduring to me, but that's maybe because I over listened to the prior ones, etc.
-
The US version talks about that blond guy as if he was the guy who killed Demonicus. The Japanese version has a myth about an ancient hero killing an ancient evil and was showing you what happened a long time ago.

hehe. Can't wait to hear the rest !

demonicus...is that the last boss name in the american version..wasnt it Galgalan ?

I just got Ys III in the mail a couple days ago, but havn't started it yet since I also got a handfull of other games. The one I started first (because it seems shorter) was Exile. I really want to get my hands on the first Ys game... I've not played that game in years.

It's like the narrator of the intro had no script and only knew a couple of names. I haven't played the game in forever, but I'm pretty sure that Galgalan was the name of the boss in game, rather than some "alien" named Demonicus as the intro would have us believe.

Hard to believe I've never played an Y's game. So now that I picked up a Duo-R several weeks back, and currently playing through Dracula X .. I'm putting a priority on picking up a copy of Y's Book I and II as I think that will be next on my must play list. Will have to source a copy, and queue it up next. I rewatched Bucci's review and can't wait.

From Felghana and on, the Ys III remake, his name has been localized to Galbalan (the cruel marauder from far off lands).
-
Having just finished YsIV, I popped III in today but I only have the PC engine version. Oddly enough the opening text is all in English, but the weapon shop menu killed me. Took forever to buy a sword.

I'm getting annoyed by the way the background scrolls. Obviously reminds me of Ninja Gaiden on the PCE.

I've always wondered wtf the developers were thinking with the jerky, opposite direction scrolling. Maybe rather than "what we're they thinking" i should be wondering "what we're they smoking". It would look 100x better with no parallax than the trash they threw in those games.
It's just a hold-over that was exciting in computer games for hardware that couldn't do parallax any better. I guess that the few PCE devs who did it imperfect figured "well, lots of other PCE games use dynamic tiles for parallax and this (imperfect) kind was once fine on other platforms, sooo..."
-
I honestly wonder if since the game was also ported to other systems(ys III) That the scrolling was most likely easier to set up the way it is then it would have been to make it smooth or another work around of sorts.
Maybe one of the programming gurus from the forum can chime in on that one since I know nothing about programming.
In some stages or areas the scrolling doesn't bother me much at all but in the main town I absolutely hate it. It would have been better off leaving the background stationary.
Even with the background choppiness the Turbo Grafx version is still the best port in my opinion due to the superior music and colors. Oh, and I like the cheesy voice acting.

I know nothing about programming on TG16, but with what little programming I have done it would be a very simple change. I was just watching the SNES version and it made me cry how nice the BG scrolling looked.

It's still the best version on home console though. I hated the scrolling and it's funny cause later in the game there is a level that has some scrolling and it's fine. BTW this game has one of the best soundtracks on the Turbo/PC-E
-
Maybe it's because it's Ys and I thus judge it too mildly, but the scrolling has never bothered me.
-
Ys III PCE is a good example of why choppy scrolling actually can be fine. Look at how many SNES and Genesis fans still say the PCE version is the best, even with the choppy scrolling and version 1 artwork. No one complains about the choppy parallax in Ys II either.
-
Even if Ys III on the SNES was the best looking game ever made, the music would still drag it down to the bottom.

Although the endless number of PCE games with various types of parallax (like Falcom's LoX) prove that it could be done in an original version, I really don't think there's anything close to a simple change that can be done to PCE Ys III's port of the tile-shuffling MSX version that would fix it.

Ah, so that's why. I prefer Galbalan over demonicus
Demonicus sounds like a cheezy evil name

This is the truth. Over-listening to something totally complicates objective judgements.
I have always held to the "Ys I&II" is superior to all argument, but Ys III is amazing.
