Title: PAL and Korean region game list?
Post by: slinkyturd on August 21, 2014, 04:14:04 PM
Just wondering if anyone has a list of games released in either region?

I have one. It's just a gimped TG-16. Games run slow.

No regional games were released in Europe or Korea. Europe was only test marketed or less. The OEM games they distributed were North American.

I did a little research and the Korean System was called a Vistar16 and the english surplus turbochips that they sold had vistar stickers slapped on them. Keith Courage got a translation. Anyone have any of these Vistar-stickered games?

Syphic does. PM him or catch him in chat on DoxPhile. He is there usually on weekdays through the morning/afternoon.

Also, the Vistar has been discussed extensively in older threads here. Might want to do some searching if you haven't already; could save you a bunch of time researching. There are original photos, ad scans, and even YouTube links to Korean TV commercials for the Vistar 16.

SOUTH KOREA (let's just agree that if a Vistar label is on a HuCARD, we will include it)

•  Well, start here (don't get excited, these are separate listings, based on the SAME SOURCE, but I did it like that so all the games were listed individually)...

http://archives.tg-16.com/magazine_database.htm?col=reg&val=s
(region is coded "s" for "South Korea")

• OLD THREADS: Yeah, I was compiling a list of "confirmed" (contemporary physical evidence of HuCARD, like eBay photo) and "semi-confirmed" Vistar releases (based on advertisements, which can be documented, but of course doesn't guarantee title was commercially released).

NEOGEOman confirmed to me the handful of titles he has (had?)...I believe he wrote/documented the first widely-read English-language article about Vistar.

UPDATE: hopefully old threads have info, because I can't locate any of my old notes at the moment. I thought I had a rough draft of an article, with pictures, I worked on years ago...but I can't find it. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

Tg-16 was released in Spain. It was sold between 1992 and 1995.  There were some games sol in its original japanese version, with a warning that they needed to be played with the adapter ( Bonks Revenge comes to mind, being reviewed by two magazines at least with this format. Other unreleased games in the west are Operation Wolf and Final Match Tennis. Release dates were odd, as some early games werent reviewed until late ( Splatterhouse in 1993 for example).

Sounds like PCE importers similar to France and test market NOS liquidation like Telegames/etc in the U.K.

Japanese games were sold locally all over North America, but they certainly weren't officially distributed. Physically region locked imports and converters are a dead giveaway.

It was sold in Germany as well, though there was at least one "grey imports" company. They made their own custom-taylored TV mods - I found an article in an old games magazine (don´t remember which issue though). Some US and some JP games were also available, but there is no recognizable pattern why certain games were chosen or not. Some of them were only available thru mail order, as there were companies operated that way.

From what I recall the system was left for dead by german games press around late 1992/early 1993, hence no further game tests.

Maybe some other EU member here has more info on that subject?

Grey is sexy. All the euro box writing is in English.

There were grey importers in quite a few countries the most notable of which was Sodipeng who was based out of France.

The legitimate NEC manufactured PAL units were definitely sold in the UK and all indications are that they were sold in Spain as well. These units played the US TurboChips, had a slower processor and had an AV out port on the side rather than the RF port. There was a different logo and a gray color.

was the processor slower? I thought that the slowness was due to PAL being 50Hz whereas NTSC is 60Hz, causing games to run at 5/6th normal speed.

I believe it's the clock crystal inside that effects the speed rather than the CPU itself. In the testing I've done of mine, games ran offspeed but not all of them did so noticeably.

Where did you hear this??

I don't know for sure which Vistar titles were released, but I can think of at least a dozen off the top of my head--good games, too! And while they are just North American hucards with stickers (on the front and back), they also have translated manuals.

Everyone seems to forget that Daewoo sold a rebranded shuttle (and controllers, joysticks) here, as well as JP-region hucards with translated manuals. I can only think of maybe 5 games I know for sure were released by Daewoo, though.

There were also imports by smaller companies like Alpha. They brought over various PCE goods, again with a bit of customization. I'm not sure if their games had translated manuals or not--haven't found very much information about these.

So, cabbage's post above inspired me to look for the old thread on Vistar... Termis was crucial  in clarifying things.

I know you bastards are lazy, so for the sake of my own sanity, I'll quote Termis....

According to the ad below, 22 titles were "localized".  The 5 titles on the ad showing:
Bonk 2
Neutopia II
Soldier Blade
Ninja Spirit
Dead Moon

On this blog, I also see:
http://blog.naver.com/q__________?Redirect=Log&logNo=130042584125
Air Zonk
Keith Courage

And the aforementioned nfg game site where most English-speaking folks initially got their info:
I'm about 95% sure the guy who sold it to him has it listed here (he says that he sold it some dude in the US, and the games on the pic are exactly that of those listed on the nfg site)  -- [url=http://bbs2.ruliweb.daum.net/gaia/do/ruliweb/default/308/read?bbsId=G005&itemId=110&articleId=1329327]http://bbs2.ruliweb.daum.net/gaia/do/ruliweb/default/308/read?bbsId=G005&itemId=110&articleId=1329327

Bloody Wolf,
King of Casino,
Super Star Soldier,
Vigilante,
Super Volleyball,
Psychosis
Devil's Crush.

That's 14 out of 22...

So, if anyone can figure out 8 (likely?) remaining Vistar HuCARD titles, that would be swell.

Have we seen any scans photos of translated manuals? I don't simply mean cover of manual...I mean, like translated contents of Vistar releases?

Yeah, the old thread has info on Alpha (which, to be honest, I forgot about)...thanks for reminding me about that.

I didn't forget about Daewoo's shuttle because the mascot was awesome....I WANT A DAEWOO BELT BUCKLE...

I dug out my list which has a few more. Bold ones were missing from the list esteban just posted, taking the total to 17. I have my suspicions about a couple more but I won't add them unless I know for sure.

Air Zonk
Blazing Lazers
Bloody Wolf
Bonk's Revenge
Cratermaze
Dead Moon
Devil's Crush
Keith Courage
King of Casino
Neutopia II
Ninja Spirit
Psychosis
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
Super Volleyball
Tiger Road
Vigilante

And here's my list of Daewoo releases... again, I can guess at some others but I haven't seen them yet.

Deep Blue
Dragon Spirit
P-47
R-Type I
Splatterhouse
Tiger Heli

And Yes, I have seen translated manuals. Give me a few minutes, I'll go try to dig up a link to something for you...

Not scans, but should do the trick.

Here's some photos of a Vistar and the Keith Courage manual.

And here are some of the Daewoo PC Shuttle and Deep Blue manual. The Shuttle manual has screenshots of other PCE games, some of which were probably actually released by Daewoo (some even have product ID numbers listed)...but since I have yet to see photos of the physical releases themselves, they're still off my master-list for the time being.

I had a PAL TurboGrafx, black and blue box, opened it up, was a big cardboard slab over top with a sealed Blazing Lasers included, also the power and TV cords were in a separate white and black box titled TurboGrafx accessories.
Don't know if the Blazing Lasers had anything different about it as I hadn't opened it up lol.

The vendor I bought my PAL TG16 from just removed the games from the boxes. They came in a baggie with a sticky seal. The cardboard box was removed, the jewel case, instructions, HuCard cover and game were inside.
