Title: Octurbofest 2014: 25th Anniversary Celebration: October 18th
Post by: chany60126 on August 23, 2014, 03:27:43 AM
The Video Game Summit was a blast. It was nice seeing familiar faces as well as new ones. But why wait until MGC for another turbo gathering??

That's right, Turbo Fest is back, but this time with thrills and chills! Behold: Octurbofest!! Back for its third straight year, we will be rocking it out at the best and largest arcade in the Midwest, Galloping Ghost Arcade. This year is especially important as we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Turbografx's release in North America!!

Admission to Octurbofest is $5. Upon entering the establishment, ask for Octurbofest, and they’ll point you in the right direction.  If you want access to the arcade it’s an additional $15, but all the machines are set to free play and you can stay as long as you want. The event will take place on October 18th. The address of the arcade is 9415 Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, IL which is only a few miles away from Chicago. The show will start at 12 PM and end at 7 PM.

Come experience some of the best games on CD and hu card, including the Super Grafx and many more. And of course, no Turbo Fest is complete without the fun 5-player Battle Lode Runner and Bomberman 94 matches. Plenty of turbo/pce systems will be available for play.

Here is a video which featured an epic 20 player Sonic Spike tourney:

Come join us for an obey filled day of fun.

Let’s keep the good times rolling!

I will try to make it but no promises. This is only a couple of months after I arrive in SC and it will be quite a trip but I will try. If not, I'll see y'all at MGC'15. :D

If Old_Rover tries, I gotta try. But I think I have a conflict already, sadly (I gotta confirm).

Just the type of question a product of the New Jersey school system would ask.  :P

Geography, we ain't got time for that!

I may wait for another time, but who knows, MF may show up to this. Seems like a good place to rip open a sealed game and toss it's contents about.

After missing VGS, definitely going to try and make this one. I need my arcade fix for the year.

Need to run through the schedule again to make sure I'm clear but otherwise count me in.

If I make it, I am going to open a sealed game, then toss the card one way, and the box the other. Free for whomever. Can't toss the case, though. That would shatter. I gotta have some sense.

I'm still seeing if this financially makes sense to attend, if I can combine it with another trip.

If not, I need to make it to one of these TG-16 fests sometime, since I am playing TG-16 more than I have in aw hile. I go through lulls of nothing, a bit , a lot, nothing, etc...

That Galloping Ghost sounds nice, I only heard of it last year, when I popped in for a short time to post about some Splatterhouse score I saw on a news site, which was old news to others here.

So I know, for the future, what are the TG places PCEFX folks tend to gather at? From what I gathered on this board, since I've been more "regular" here lately; The VGC thing in July, MGC, and this? I just need to fill in, since if I know of them, I can keep them in mind next time they roll around, if Octurbofest does not make financial sense to me.

I sometimes plan far ahead for, "Vacation" type stuff, like 6 months, but also pick up on things quick, if they make sense.

So, are the main ones MGC, VGC, and this?

You sir are correct.

If I had to suggest one to attend to try the gatherings out, I'd say MGC in March/April.  It's a much larger event with vendors and goodies up the wazoo.  VGS is like a much smaller version of MGC and OcTurboFest is just a bunch of us nerds that gather at an Arcade (the coolest arcade of all time!).

I'm not too keen on the vendors. Not much I'm interested in adding to what I already have, except maybe a few loose NES or 2600 carts. I'd more be going for playing TG-16 with nerds, not buying games.

*edited to add;

Joshua,

Thank you for the information. The Octurbofest is just a short time, a set amount of hours of one day. If I can coordinate, I will do it, otherwise, come this Winter, I will plan to make it to one, or both, of the other 2 when they roll around again.

Obligatory plug for MAGFest. But if you wanting to PLAY obey...MAG might not be the best for you. Personally, I play at home, but at cons I like to mingle and meet new turboheads. Talking shop with fellow like-minded folks with a few beers...okay, A f*ckING LOT of beers, is tops in my book.

From my experience, the Great Lakes region seems to have the majority of PCFX members that actually get out to cons. There are other gaming conventions: MAGFest, PAX, CGE, Portland Retro, SGC, TMG...there is even Retropalooza that is on it's 2nd year that might be closer to you but will lack in the turbo department for sure.

I agree with Josh, def plan for MGC. 'Fest and VGC are cool if you are local...I would not pay for a flight or drive more than 5 hours for them. But if you're like me, after meeting forum folks at MGC, I make VGC and Turbofest when my schedule allows.

This years Octurbo falls in-between TFC and Youmacon...it'll be a tough sell for me to make it, but with me, you never know if I'll show my ugly mug.

That's all it is. When I show to one of these, I'd want to encounter someone from these boards. I, long story short, go through lulls of not TG-16 (Sorry, I bought at TG, got into it as TG, so, yes, like PCE, but..), some games, more games than before, less, it repeats.

I see what the main 3 seem to be. This upcoming one, unless I can make certain plans flow, I won't make it. but, if from what I read about the other 2 I mentioned, stays true 'til the next go round, i'll give at least one of those a go.

A silly trip just to play TG/PCE, yeah, but why not, at least once.

I'll read about MAGfest after this post. See what, how that is. Galloping ghost seems nice. no big need to worry about beer there, I read something they allow outside stuff inside, NOT ALCOHOL, and I have a palette that I can drink Non-alcoholic, of certain brands at certain temperatures. Easier to that than ask for tea, I'd imagine. I hate, "Soft drinks" (Soda water + sugar). I wasn't raised with it, so I don't have the taste for it. What more can I say!

True that GG does not allow alcohol (or gum! I've been busted for chewing gum a bunch of times for whatever reason), but there's a Chinese takeout place and a diner close by. More food options if you're willing to travel a few miles in either direction.

There's also a bar that Majors and I frequent when we're there - it's called "In The Galloping Ghost Parking Lot Between Two Cars"

.........

NA stuff is OK for me, I just can't drink much Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, Dr. Pepper, Surge (I know it's gone), etc. It's not the sugar buzz, more like an, "We're not used to all this sugar, we better crash to survive, MF." brain feeling. NAB is probably fine, there.... or water + tea, coffee, etc.

I'll see what I can do, I've been talking about this one the past few days here, and if I can line up certain obstacles to make sense, I can maybe make it.

If they were going for the real authentic late-80's arcade experience, they would allow chain smoking on premises and would have a pizza oven burning pizza to cinders 'round the clock.

There's a documentary about  Rock-a-Fire on Netflix. Its goes over the history and origins of showbiz, and folks who collect the bands and reprogram them with modern songs. It was pretty interesting yet disturbing at the same time.

Don't worry. Neither will I. I don't have the time to sink into mastering the PCE version. The MD version is a different story though.

There's a documentary about  Rock-a-Fire on Netflix. Its goes over the history and origins of showbiz, and folks who collect the bands and reprogram them with modern songs. It was pretty interesting yet disturbing at the same time.

Yep, I've seen it. Speaking of which here is a video of the broken one during the visit with Chop and Chany.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PianfNfJKEQ&list=UUxPMzoAXVbegHOR4A1MHKKQ

That video freaked me out.  I like that stuff, I need to watch that documentary.

Dan Iacovelli here (VGS Promoter)
I had to sign up to see this thread that armando posted on facebook
(not everybody on facebook has an account to this forum)
TurboFest at MGC is not affiliated with the one we do at VGS,since they never mention it
and it prob has little to with OCturboFest.
with that said, We have designed a new black Turbofest VGS Specific Tour Shirt.
you can see it here http://VideoGameSummit.net/?page_id=137 (http://videogamesummit.net/?page_id=137) under the pre-order items
if we get 10 or more orders we will move it to the main section of our store.
VGS 2015 is still being worked on since we can no longer return to heron, we are in negotiations with other venues expanding both sections vendors and game area,  we need to raise close to 2k to do so donate when you can

I'm officially a no-go unfortunately...real-life responsibilities for a friend I gotta take care of that day. Plus I'm still recovering from Retropalooza and that 2,000 mile drive. ugh.

Hope everyone has a blast! I would like to organize a day down at Galloping Ghost though when Winter hits if anyone is interested.

At MGC we tell everyone that comes in that we have tournaments/events at both VGS AND OcTurboFest.  I have a FB event/group that specifically lists the MGC, VGS and OcTurboFest TurboFests as the TurboFest Tours.  I'd say we're all pretty much affiliated..

@Dan: We are very much connected to MGC Turbo Fest. We always support each other as we spread the word about all 3 events: MGC, VGS and Octurbofest. While I am not one of the organizers of MGC Turbo Fest, I always make an effort to attend and have a blast hanging out with the fellow turbo enthusiasts, many of whom also attend VGS and Octurbofest.

@Jeff and Josh: Your presence will be missed. :(

and I encourage you to mention the fundraiser if you want to see VGS continue( expect changes to VGS starting next year, vendor area and game area going be separate is the one main change I going for)

well nobody told me about it being connected, only few times that was there at mgc that somebody mentioned vgs /turbofest or had flyers for vgs.
And yes it's true ,heron point is longer available to us as of 2015 so VGS might be at its end, unless we get enough funds for the show to continue for us to expand we need at least 2k which would cover the vendor area, my jobs vacation pay helped me pay off the show, well as of jan 25th,2014 I have been unemployed and I can't afford to run the show on my own even with todd's help.
this is why I tell the staff to help by mentioning the fundraiser on forums or events like OCTurboFest.

let me know if you do!  My flight arrives in the afternoon and I also was thinking about visiting the arcade before turbofest. It would be bad firm to disobey at turbofest.

I work Friday night but i was thinking about going after. Which would mean I'd get to GG at around 11-ish. On Friday they close at 2 so that would only give me 3 hours-ish. Or i was also just thinking of getting to GG at 11 on Saturday since that's when they open and then stay at the arcade after Octurbofest.

I don't know, I've got some plannin' to do. I'll let ya know.

Hi jtucci, I think we could use an extra CD based turbo system. It would also be pretty cool to have a Turbo Everdrive or two if you or anyone else has one.

I am not exactly sure how our space will look like this year since we will be in a different spot as others have alluded to earlier. The preference will go to our beloved turbo system as ideally I would like there to be 4 turbo stations. But if we have room we could use the x68000. You can bring it if you want, just keep in mind there is a chance we might not have room for it.

Thank you all for your offer to help! :D

They expanded the arcade which is a plus.  However that resulted in us getting thrown into the "storage closet" two buildings over which was a minus.

What is funny is that the room we were set up in was next to a really big room which  instead became Chop's lair.

Maybe next time we will be able to set all the TV's and chairs up in that one.

Still was easy to have a great time though.

My one regret: I didn't have enough time to go eat pizza with you guys and hang out after. Had a busy weekend but at least I got ample time at Octurbofest.

I'm glad ya came out Nullity! It was great to meet ya. Hope your stay in the Chicagoland area was everything you hoped it would be!

how did i miss the octurbofest mini game??

thanks to chany and everyone that made this event possible, and to everyone that lugged their turbob out so that everyone could obey.  also, it was cool running into the regulars, as well as meeting new people this year. hopefully it won't be another year before we can all get together again.

Sounds like you guys had a blast (as expected)! I wish I could have been there.  Hopefully I'll make my way up there next year.

I wish I had an extra day to bask in Galloping Ghost's plethora of new machines.

We were minus a few regulars this year but at least I got to meet some new faces. Miss you guys already.

(the ROM is available on my website)

...so what good games did you all play there? Any high-score competitions on 2- or 5-min Soldier games or some such?

How many people went total? Hey, is that Croooow I see in the back?

Aye that was Croooow.

Coolest was the 5-player Dungeon Explorer. PLaying the game single player for years didn't prepare me for the hilariously awesome experience of 5-players plowing through enemies like Jason Vorhees at a camp counselor national reunion.

Wish I could have made it but real life got in the way. I'm still trying to get something organized for January or February if anyone is interested.

Otherwise, see ya'll at MGC 2015!
