Title: Shitty games that YOU love.
Post by: Desh on September 30, 2014, 03:47:39 PM
Just as the title says, what are some games universally regarded as being crap, that you love, and why?

Here are mine:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/SHOracer14/Mobile Uploads/IMG_20140930_223124_279_zpsf54ca889.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/SHOracer14/media/Mobile Uploads/IMG_20140930_223124_279_zpsf54ca889.jpg.html)

Spiritual Warfare.  Yeah, it is Wisdom Tree's finest.  Straight up Zelda clone set in modern times.  My Catholic grade school education pays off because answering questions about the Bible gives you power ups.  How can you not love enemies that drop to their knees and pray when you kill them?

Days of Thunder.  I love this movie.  The racing gets monotonous but this was the best NASCAR game available back in the day.  I love that you had to manually "pit" the car and that would determine the chance of winning or losing.  Plus, the damage the car can sustain and how it effects the car was ahead of it's time.

Hard Driving.  To this day the arcade version holds up as a great driving simulator.  I think this was the first arcade racer to feature a working clutch pedal.  If you have a sit down arcade of this for sale I am interested.  The graphics certainly haven't held up but VR in the late 80's early 90's was the shit.  Of course the console ports are not nearly as good as the arcade but that didn't stop me from putting hours into this game when I was a kid.

Terminator 2 Judgement Day (not arcade).  A game that actually followed the movie!  I even liked the NES version too.  This game is nothing special by today's standards or the standards of it's day but I still find it enjoyable.

Duke Nukem Forever.  Any self respecting fan of the OG Duke Nukem 3D on PC can't say that they hate this game.  It seriously looks and feels like that original masterpiece.  It doesn't hold up to today's FPS games but I don't care.  Playing this takes me right down memory lane.  Unfair deaths and WTF is killing me right now!? included.

Spiritual Warfare is the only decent Color Dreams game. It is well built. They released the source code for it a while ago and there's some questions (with money awards) about the NES hardware's behaviour that's widely documented in some internet sites. I find it funny because we have 10x better tools and documentations than what many people had back in the day. That includes le obey.

infinite undiscovery
everyone hates the execution, the terrible american dub, the gameplay ideas, the frame rate, the name itself is awful blah blah...
i just love the level grinding on this and find it therapeutic, the gameplay ideas while not well implemented are interesting as too are the story and character designs.

Theres an old PC game I love to play.  The game really sucks and almost no one has heard about it.  The game mechanics are somewhat flawed and overall its really really boring..    All that said, I love the subject matter of the game.  In fact I would partially credit my desire to get into alternative energy research to this game.

The one, the only...  Powerhouse!

I liked Dragon's Lair 3D.

I'm completely aware of all of its flaws, but I was able to fight my way through them, play through the game and enjoy it. Terrible control and camera problems plague the game, but... yeah I liked it.

I searched for it and it looked OK for a 1995 PC game. It is done by impressions so I'm not sure if it's shitty, unless you're saying it is FRUSTRATING shitty which I might agree. I'm a fan of Ceasar 3 (also Impressions) and this game has a downright IDIOTIC design of resources to houses (like food, maintenance, crime patrol, etc.) only available if the little NPC with the job to supply it passed close to the houses. This is specially aggravating when you have a road intersection since the AI of the characters are so dumbed down that houses will keep fluctuating size and kicking out villagers from them because of not having regular food from the marketplace, while being a couple of squares away from it.

I probably did an awful job describing it but those who have played this game KNOW

Hehe yeah Caesar 3 was pretty bad.  The problem with powerhouse was multifold.  Poor AI, game crashing bugs, and generally slow, boring gameplay.  Really not much is ever going on.  But to me there was something neat about building solar power plants and researching better nuclear power that was just fascinating to me.   On the plus side, things like oil, coal and natural gas were present in the game but they were a pain to utilize. Good because it encourages alternatives.   I guess this is because the game takes place after the age of fossil fuels but I still would have expected them to be easy and super cheap energy sources in the game.   I always supplied everything with a combo of wind, solar, wave, geothermal, hydroelectric, and sometimes nuclear power.  Sounds like what we need in the real world...  Who knows, but I will always love the little game... :)

I love Super Chase H.Q.  That game has the best and smoothest driving controls of any 16-bit driving game.  Maybe I need to give Addams Family another shot.  I have not played through Impossamole but I didn't mind the bit of it I've played.

Man screw this shitty game. Even for someone that only knows the basics of the basics of football (me) it's evident that Cinemaware's port is a turd. It doesn't compare favorably to Madden DUO (Madden '93). Hell even John Madden Football for the Apple II must be better.

Edit: unless you meant also (or) the Basketball one. I didn't play that one.

Honestly I wish that Cinemaware made TV Sports Football for the CD attachment. It would turn up at least better in terms of graphics. This video is like an alternate dimension window if you pretend you didn't see the Amiga CD32 logo.

In addition to Super Pitfall (NES), let me add Athena (NES)—I have a love-hate relationship with Athena.

I also like ROCK • ON (PCE), which is a poor, sociopathic man's R-Type.

Both of 'em.  Played the shit out of them as a kid because, well, i had nothing else to do when i got them.  Once you get the controls down, they're fun games.  I can see how the simple minded or dim witted might not be able to grasp the controls or appreciate the greatness of TV Sports games, but you know, that's why we have short busses.

I had fun with TV Sports titles, they weren't great, but you could certainly have fun.

The Football game was probably the one I played the most single-player or 2-player...Hockey and Basketball were almost always 3+ people.

People don't seem to like Rambo for NES, but it's a cool "Metroidvania" that was a lot of fun when it came out.

Athena NES was also a cool memorable experience. As chaotic as it is, it felt like anything could happen. I had dreams of being stuck in that game world for years.

Night Creatures is very satisfying to beat and more entertaining to play through than many other non-sport/non-polygonal Turbo games.

Tecmo Secret of the Stars is another game that seems to be hated by people who haven't played through it, often just because it looks like an NES game. It is very slow, but if you have the time it is worth playing through.

Sword of Vermillion has some cool music and art in places. It's not a common style of game and I like the atmosphere.

Sports Football for the Commodore Amiga CDTV/CD32 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyXg6-2mLVY#)

"Originally this game was a re-working of Cinemaware's TV SPORTS FOOTBALL 2 (unreleased due to the company's bankruptcy) that was intended for release on the CDTV as AMIGA CDTV SPORTS FOOTBALL. Due to lengthy delays, it was never released on the CDTV either because of the dying market and was instead adapted for the CD32 and released as AMIGA CD32 SPORTS FOOTBALL."

Holy crap I was right on the money. I knew it had an odd cinemaware feel to it haha.

About the games only I like, well... I'll post them soon. Sorry for mostly commenting on other people's games instead of doing a proper post.

Pretty much a kid ver. of GTA. Not entirely sure I'd call it shitty, but I'm sure some would. Used to watch the show with friends for some reason. One day, while inside Satan's booty* I saw it and was like "Okay, fine, I'll buy you for $5." Glad I did, totally had some fun doing stupid side missions and collect-a-thon-ing.

Back in the day, I don't think many people would have considered this "shitty"  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

It certainly was  enjoyable and refreshing to play through, and anyone who liked Konami knew that "Ultra" was somehow connected to Konami. Somehow.

Konami and Ultra were brands I could trust, it was rare that I ever felt like I wasted my money with their offerings.

Which brings me to a game that really was considered "shitty", especially by Konami's standards:

Bayou Billy — I don't know if I can say I truly enjoy the whole game enjoyable (the beat-em-up stages are tedious, and I am sick of the early stages), but I really like the driving/shooting stages, and the overall atmosphere of the game (mostly delivered by the beat-me-stages, ironically) to be pretty convincing and refreshing.

That said, I am still disappointed by this game, even after all these years.

No, I haven't played the Japanese version yet.

...but I still find *some* enjoyment, despite all the pain I suffer, and that's why it belongs in this thread.

Yeah, NES Metal Gear was NEVER considered remotely shitty. Some wimps bitched about it because they couldn't find the first gun and gave up, but that was it. (Those people went on to love Chrono Trigger and depend on Prima strategy guides.) Nobody knew what the hell an MSX was. If you were a kid, you played Metal Gear a NES and the Snake's Revenge was the official sequel.  f*ck. When did modern gamers become so disconnected from their roots?

Loads more agree from me here too.  I feel that MG on NES was way ahead of it's time gameplay wise.  At least for a home console game.  I have been very much wanting to buy the MSX Arkhan has had listed for the sole purpose of playing the "real" original Metal Gear games.

Agreed these days i see more hate for the nes metal gear then ever.I don't know why it was seen as a classic in it's day but not now.I guess once the msx metal gear became available through compilations and emulation, dislike really started to show for the nes version.Yes i know hideo kojima doesn't approve of the nes version since they took his game and change it.Still i don't think it's a bad game nor that hard once you know where to go etc.

Metal Gear is one of the MSX Konami games that got ported quickly and cheaply for cash-in purposes. It really shows but it's not as bad as people make it up to be. It is quite good despite the original ver. being superior. Kojima was just an employee of Konami and of course he would have no say about porting his game, no one would kiss his ass like they do today.

The one that really gets the undeserved hate however is Snake's Revenge. It mostly comes from stuff like:
1. Kojima didn't work on it: Kojima was just another designer at Konami, not a superstar, and he had his hands full with other PC88 games like Snatcher. The team responsible for Snake's Revenge was the same (or mostly) the Castlevania team if I'm not mistaken. And it wasn't just a cash grab like the port of the first one.
2. The side scrolling stages!!!: It's only a portion of the game and it's not bad, it's just mediocre.
3. It's not the official sequel!!! Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is!!!: This game convinced Kojima to do the "actual sequel" not because it was shitty however.

SNAKE'S REVENGE might not be a "official sequel" but really who cares besides hipsters and AVGN watchers. It is a solid game all around. Not saying that a PC Engine version of MG2 wouldn't be nice...

I really like Milon's Secret Castle.

It's tough and it's unfair at times, but one summer I devoted myself to finally finishing this game (and succeeded, albeit using a the slow motion function on the NES Advantage joystick on some boss battles).

I also have fond memories of Super Hydlide on the Sega Genesis

lol!
Well, it was one of the first titles I purchased for my Genesis back in 1990, so perhaps it's just nostalgia goggles kicking in.

But I was impressed by the soundtrack and the 'realistic' time and weight elements incorporated into the game.  Hard as nails though.

I LOVE Sonic Heroes! Yeah it's glitchy and buggy as hell but that really only adds to the fun as you can find ways to "break" the game. A great nu age Sonic game.

These aren't considered 'Shitty" per say, but I think Mega Man 6 and 5 are better than 4 and 3. There I said it! Come at me!

I really love Bad Street Brawler for the NES.

I always liked how you got a different set of moves each level to keep things fresh.  I also crack up when the hero is on camera and says "Hi mom"  The game is hard as nails though due to a punishing time limit.  I think I died more due to time out then loss of energy.  Still this has been a favourite of mine since childhood.

I also really like Clayfighters 63 1/3.

I always found it funny and a enjoyable albeit a slower paced fighting game.  I don't know why this game gets so much hate but I love it and have very few complaints.

Time Cruise gets a bad rap because the Crush games are freakin' epic, but I still love playing it. It's not a shitty game and anyone who thinks so needs to give it another shot.

I like playing Rival Turf! on the SNES which is a blatant Final Fight ripoff... :)

Spirits & Spells on Gamecube, it received lots of hate for being unoriginal and repetitive, but I really enjoyed playing through it.  Even with the wonky controls and everything.  I like the ambiance and music quite a bit.  It's a good Crash Bandicoot clone if you ask me, and it was exclusive to the Gamecube.... Probably why I picked it up and made myself like it...

Outlander on the MD is considered to be pretty bad, right?

False!

I like it a lot more then the SNES version. The first person perspective where your arm really turns the wheel is awesome!  Plus the Genesis musical twang really fits the feel of the game.

I agree!  I think the sidescrolling bits are what loses people though.  I enjoy them, if only for the nice grafx.

The sidescrolling part is fun if just for the fact you just duck and punch people in the balls
