Title: Games you never finished?
Post by: lukester on October 10, 2014, 08:57:42 AM
Most people have at least one game they got far in, but never/can't beat.

I guess I got a few.

Resident Evil 2: a recent one actually. I managed to beat Leon A, but am stuck in a tight spot in Claire B. I'll just have to move on to something else.

Ys Origin: Not a bad game, but very repetitive after having played Ys Oath in Felghana. Too linear, and the main character (Yunica) sucks. I'm halfway, so I could get back to it.

Far Cry 3: I wasn't too good, but long load times and bad framerate on 360 put me off moreso. I think I made at least 1/4 of the way through.

Legend of Starfy: Got this when I was younger. I was hyped, but the game was extremely easy and short. I could't beat the final boss though, since I couldn't tap the button fast enough.

I also couldn't beat Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for the exact same reason, until I replayed it a few years later.

I've got a lot of OBEY that's just too hard for me to beat (mainly shewties); there's too many to list.  There's also quite a few that haven't been given a fair chance yet, but I hope to get to 'em some day.

For PSP, most all of 'em have been cleared or not yet played.  The ones that I gave up on are few, namely Frantix, Bubble Bobble Evolution, and Dungeon Explorer (90+ hours in and maybe half way).

You're playing Dungeon Explorer on PSP? Damn. I know it's not like PCE games...but I'd love to hear your impressions.

Dungeon Explorer on the PSP is Dungeon Explorer in name only.  It's a straightforward and rather bland hack 'n' slash dungeon crawler that wouldn't be all that bad if it didn't overstay its welcome (it's kinda fun in the beginning); but it's loooooooong and not in a good way with lots of differing content to enjoy.  I gave up on it at about 90 hours, after perusing the internet and finding I was a bit less than halfway through.  Yeah, 200+ hours of grinding.....  ](*,)

There's some variety with occasional special missions and eventual big boss fights (each dungeon has a mini-boss, but they're nothing special), but you mostly play the same generic missions over and over and over again just to gain enough experience, and you won't stand a chance if you move on to the higher dungeons too soon.  Pro tip: change classes as soon as possible to unlock the best classes (check teh interwebz).  Better pro tip: play something else.

Here are some recent games I never finished.  If I listed every game in history, it would fill a book.  lol.  Well, it would fill at least a few pages because I used to rent games all the time and hardly finished any of them.  But these days, I will finish a game 99% of the time.  The games below reflect my last 5 years of gaming (2009 - 2014).

1.  Final Fantasy XII (PS2)- I got stuck in a building where I couldn't leave to level up some more.  The boss in the building was too hard for my characters.

2.  Disgaea (PS2) - I tried to get into this series going but it requires a lot of strategy to beat certain levels.  So I got bored and stopped playing it.

3. L.A. Noire (Xbox 360) - Good game but can get repetitive.  Once again, I got bored.  Hehe.

4. Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) - It started off pretty good, but once again got repetitive.  I heard the rest of the series is very good, much better than the first one.  So, maybe I should give the rest of the series a shot.

5. Willow (NES) - Excellent game and similar to The Legend of Zelda.  But I was right in the middle of another game at the time, so I was distracted.  I like to play video games one at a time.  This is one of those games that I will come back to.

Little Off-topic, but my favorite 2600 games are Yar's Revenge, Phoenix, and Pitfall. Can't technically beat them of course.

If you can actually play pitfall for the full 20 mins (or whatever the time is), your finished.  :D
And no, not just standing there. Actually advancing.

I assume you're talking about games that you got really far into, making a major time commitment, but never finished.

FFVIII for me. I made it all the way to the final dungeon, too. By that point, any hopes I had for the story redeeming itself were finally dashed, and I just said screw it. I think I was 80 hours in, too. It was high school, and I had broken my leg, so I was going through tons of RPGs at the time.

Every Final Fantasy ever made.  I just get bored with them after about half way through

Vay - I started it in 95 then just stopped at one spot.  Now every time I start it again I get busy and just forget about it.

Almost every PC-Engine RPG that I own

Way to many next gen titles to list.  It is why I have stopped buying them 4 years ago.

Ditto!  I am not a very big turn based RPG fan at all but I will sometimes give them a chance.  I have never completed:

Final Fantasy on NES.  I tried about 4 years ago.  I was grinding going through the volcano area and realized I wasn't having fun.

Final Fantasy VII.  I got it when it first came out on PC and was very close to the end.  I tried playing it on PlayStation again recently and got bored after getting out of the first big city (can't remember what it's called).

I actually DID finish Breath of Fire but I didn't want to.  The end of that game literally felt like doing chores.  I was NOT having fun and didn't even look forward to playing it at that point but I was determined to complete what I started and did.

I never finished GTA San Andreas either.

Both, fall under NES. One I may want to finish one day, but won't lose sleep over, the other, I should, and will one day.

- Fester's Quest - Frustrated the crap out of me. From what I recall, I did not use the Game Genie, probably because my codebook did not have codes, or at least, not good codes. OK game, but irritated me.

- Beetlejuice - I recall the NES game being pretty decent, but my rental ran out before I could complete it, later, that rental store went under, no others had it, later, it was not too east to find used, then, it went on a back-burner of sorts.

This does remind me, I still need to complete Somer Assault. Perhaps, Sparky's box will help me focus (Sparky has boxes, he sent me one).

Final Fantasy on NES.

I never finished GTA San Andreas either.

I played through maybe half of FF on the NES. I enjoyed what I played but just never finished it.

And I played so much of GTA San Andreas. It took so long to get through that story, mainly because I would dick around endlessly and then do a mission here or there, and I still never finished it. I'll be damned if I still don't remember that map though. Parachuting was far too much fun for me.

Turn based rpgs i use to have no problem finishing them. These days,i'm more likely to finish a action rpg then a turn based one.

I'm having this problem currently too. I got pretty much to the end of Chrono Trigger on the DS and never finished it last winter. I think I'm going to pick it up again and play it over again soon.

However right now I'm plowing through Ys Book I & II. I like both games a lot, action RPGs just keep me going slightly more.

It's okay slinky, LA II's final level is complete horse shit. You will beat it, just might take you a while.

Axe is better than sword, but you can't get close to the giant robots. And each time you die, you lose health.

It took me a few days to beat that game, only because of that level. It is the main reason why I prefer the first game.

I played through Lunar 1 on the Playstation back when it was new, but never played through the Sega CD one, I've now picked up the Sega CD one and plan on playing through it.

I've also never finished Final Fantasy VII, and am playing it now on PSP.

As for OBEY games that I've never played through, it's a long list, however I do plan on conquering this mountain some day soon-

Image Fight II (Yeah right...)
Gate of Thunder (I know right?)
L-Dis
Download 2
Cosmic Fantasy 3
Gulliver boy
Emerald Dragon (hahah.... laughs turn to cries....*)

*Always be sure to back up your saves regularly if you have the Teneoke Bank.

Pretty nuch anything Bethseda

Fallout 3 (finished but not the GOY edition)
Oblivian GOY
GTA IV and III
Red dead redemtption GOY
Skyrim GOY
Farcry III

I play these and love them. But I never seem to play the core game. Just side missions or trying to uncover every location on the game and sup up my character to some form of god like level and then play the core game

Like in skyrim. I have not played a single part of the core game.

But I have: a fully upgraded theif, sneak, lock picker, archer, spell caster and working on my armor smithing and potian making.

Same here, I just quit playing Skyrim after sinking about 100 hours into and feeling like I had made little progress.  There are just simply too many other games I wanted to play.

I know we all have many games that we just never beat, too many to list even, but one that I still remember is Evolution on Dreamcast.  I just could never beat the final boss and gave up out of frustration.

Ditto on Skyrim. I was impressed by the size of the pool, but after a few hours I realized it was only ankle deep. Probably the only game that I didn't finish that I would like to go back to would be SMT:Nocturne. I can barely stomach turn based RPGs anymore, but I really liked playing demonic pokemon.

From those games that I went through but halted at the end due to difficulty, loss of interest or not knowing how to beat the last mission or boss:
- GTA IV (Xbox 360)
- Valis (PCE)
- MGS 3 (PS2)

Almost finished:
Pokemon Gold, I had 250 Pokemon collected (only missing Mew), 2 teams of level 100 Pokemon trained by hand (no cheats or rare candies involved).  haven't played for a decade (only checking the game every other year for half an hour or so) and then discovered my save file was lost in 2014. Duh.

Should have made an SRAM backup using the Retrode.

I have been tempted at times to go disk only at times for the more expensive games.

But I can usually only bring myself to buy cartridge and hu games loose and cd/dvd based games in case.

One game that I have never completed that I must get back to is Super Star Soldier.  If I remember correctly I when this was in the play pile I could shoot myself through to the later levels, however I hit the wall of no progression!

Another one that springs to mind is Neutopia 2.  Managed to get to the last section of the game and for some reason stopped playing.  Maybe work just got in the way of fun!

Also there is still Tatsujin in the same pile as well ;-)

NES - Dungeon Magic
Sunk a ton of hours into this one, made it really far, and had a great time. Then I made the mistake of taking a few weeks off at the point in the game where things get really hard. I tried to pick it up again, but I couldn't remember what I was doing and the enemies in the next dungeon were impossibly tough.

TG16 - Dragon Slayer

Lost my save slot several times in the late Nineties and haven't had the motivation to grind through the beginning again.

SMS - Golden Axe Warrior
My save slot has been at the 2/3 mark for about ten years. I guess I just lazy.

Can't remember if it was Bubble Bobble Evolution or the one for the Bubble Bobble for the Nintendo DS but they forgot to put the boss in one of the stages and you can't pass that stage.

I've gotten to the final boss in Neutopia 2 and haven't been able to beat him.

Googlerins says the glitched one is Bubble Bobble Revolution on the DS, so I'm stuck because I suck and can't figure out what I'm supposed to do next.  :|

In Super Star Soldier i always have trouble with the stage 4 boss. I can beat him, but no efficiently enough to hold my power ups afterward. So level 5 is pretty difficult with no power ups.

And Tatsujin will probably be in that pile for a long time

I have never beaten PCE or Arcade Tatsujin. I have beaten Genesis Truxton.

Passing over this thread a few times, I recalled a game that I never managed to will myself to return to and finish.

Grandia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandia_(video_game)) by Game Arts for the Playstation.

I tried to just run through it, but I would get so bored out, can't remember what it was, the music or the story, the characters and the voice-acting, etc... But yeah, I tried a handful of times to continue off from my save point, but would eventually get tired and put it off for another day - the last time was 7 years ago I think... Then there's the problem of waiting too long and completely forgetting the story, what the hell you were supposed to do next, and realizing you're probably better off starting over and attempting to get through it in a timely fashion without long breaks...

I used to have a personal policy that if I bought a game and started playing it, I will finish it to the end, even if it's lousy... Grandia remains a thorn in my side relative to that policy, it continues to remain unbeaten and I kinda dread ever going back to it.

Oblivion on PC... Like some of the others here I sunk countless hours into the game and basically did every side quest possible butnever got very far in the main storyline.

Banjo Kazooie....  I love this game... LOVE IT.  I play it basically every year around the holidays but Ive never actually beaten Gruntilda at the end... Go figure... :(

They're all opinions, but I really like Grandia :) (I actually have some goodies from the game enroute from Japan right now)
The soundtrack is one of my favorites for any video game, but I will admit the US translation is a bit trite.  Also, since it's the PS version instead of the Saturn it doesn't look as awesome.  After saying all that though, I actually had a very similar situation to yours with the game myself.  I originally played for a bit and then stopped, and came back to it a couple years later.  I actually did restart and played through the whole game and loved it though.

I highly recommend going back to Grandia again from the beginning if you can, maybe play a middling 16 bit game before Grandia for a bit so by comparison you can enjoy it a bit more.  :D

The game is great, but it has a slow start. Once you get over the giant wall...literally the game opens up and gets much better.

Back on topic, I'll just name a few of my more recent games since this list could go on and on.

Dark Souls II. So i'm a huge fan of the souls series, but for some reason i got to the giant spider boss and just stopped playing. This happened with Dark souls I as well. I eventually went back to the game and beat it. I'm sure a time will come where i will completely start over in Dark Souls II and just play it through to completion.

Earthbound. I started playing this game a few months ago, and put around 12 hours into it. I haven't played it for about a month. I want to go back to it, but Bayonetta 2 comes out tomorrow.

Lemme add another one to the list:

* Battletoads for NES. Many know why... A stage towards the end requires great precision to master and with limited continues, you don't get the practice needed and eventually fail hard. I ought to save state the thing some time with a NES emulator to finally see the ending. I like James Nintendo Nerd's episode on it, he notes the awesomeness of the pause music. ;)

I could swear there was a similar thread for this BTW...

Yeah, xelement, I dunno about Grandia, on paper it's a RPG that should've been right up my alley, but I didn't get too much enjoymemt from it... A real bleh feeling built up on my playthrough attempt... I hate to admit I bought something I can't stand and will push through for the storytelling regardless trying to find value somewhere (in my frequent game player days that is), but yeah, it was really tough for me with this game...

I don't remember the soundtrack being great, I'll have to look at that. Maybe get a PSF rip of all tracks see what was good in there.
