Title: So f*ckin Epic
Post by: cjameslv on November 15, 2014, 10:49:07 AM
Action Replay Reflashing

Just did this today to my newly acquired japanese saturn! I used the action replay 4 plus. I been eyeing this thread on assembler for awhile. Nice to see someone compile this and put up a complete setup with loader. I cant wait for more versions with more supported features.  Right now it does region free and 4/1mb memory but no saves as of yet.

I was talking to chop5 about the Psuedo Saturn cart in chat the other day.  It's a pretty cool concept, and I'm amazed what they are still figuring out how to do within the confines of the system.

That said, I know there are still games with issues booting and restoring from saves, plus to my knowledge you need to modify the ISOs you burn first in order to get them to boot using the cart.  Something about needing to modify part of the header.  I will stick with my modchip and also save my cart slot from yet from more widening ;)

Well haven't ran into any issue needing to modify the iso headers. Pumped out like 15 cd-rs today lol and really happy. Now i don't know about saves but most that games i play are shmups on it. I'll be doing more testing as it advances, as i'm sure more fixes will continue to be made.

If I remember correctly the guy who figured out this exploit managed to defeat the Saturn's security using a hacked Gameboy cartridge. Genius.

I'm curious if you need to have that piece of tape to make the Saturn think that its closed all the time.

Just to flash the cart, you may remove the tape afterwards. Or, use a modchipped Saturn to load the Atlas disc and flash the cart.

That's really neat, it means I won't have to drop $$$$$ to get rarez games.

I did mine with out even opening my saturn. Just use the swap trick. Took a few tries but once you get it your good!

This is so cool it makes me want to get another cart just to try it.

As it stands, I actually need the cheat-code function for a project I'm doing. But damn, if they can get the cheat-code/backup memory part to work, I'll be all over it.

It's been a long time since I looked at Saturn mod-chips, but 10 years ago, you pretty much needed to have a model-2 system with a certain type of CD drive. This is too bad, because model 1 systems at cheaper, at least when it comes to Japanese Saturns.

Right now, I've got a mod chip in a system with a dead cart port. But I've also got a backup Saturn in the wings, and if this works, I won't have to worry about transferring the mod.

I remember hearing how a Saturn ever drive might be possible as it is the only cd based system that had a cartridge port that directly feeds into the mother board thus allowing a ever drive with ISO roms that could be read and flash installed by passing the laser disk drive.

Just a theory but man imagine.

I also remember hearing how at one point there was talks of having the DC to be back words comparable with Saturn games but that Sega of America said no to that from the start as "the Saturn is not segas future.

Imagine playing Saturn games on a DC.  Sick.

Autocorrection strikes again

I emailed the guy I am doing my Princess Crown translation with. I do the translating, he does the hacking.

I was like " Dude, have you seen this? It's awesome!"

And he was like "Yah, I've seen it. Probably because I wrote it myself."

OH SHIT!

Lol, that's pretty funny.

How's the Princess Crown translation coming by the way?  I was playing it for awhile in Japanese but when I heard there was going to be a translation I decided to wait to play it.

Inquiring minds want to know ;)

How would that work?

Have a JP copy and a cart to flash the translation?

And I forget.  But there was Snatcher. But there is another Kojima game he did similar but in space for either the Sega Cd or Daturn. Memory is working against me. But there is a fan translation. How do you play it on a home system?  I saw the website awhile back about it but I don't remember the particulars.

It's pretty easy. You download an ISO (or make your own) and use an IPS patch on it.

The translation is done. It's just a matter of getting the text engine to work properly. Also, there is some text that is stored as images which we'll have to edit. It's mostly up to the hacker.

Thanks for the update!  I know the text for Cosmic Fantasy Stories on the MegaCD has been fully translated too and is waiting for someone to do the insertion as well.

This is so awesome. I hope this leads to a Saturn ever drive soon. Also equally awesome is the princess crown translation.

Just so I'm sure, this is just to play CDRs right? Nothing at all to do with loading games from the AR memory.
Just my opinion, but the v3 saturn modchips are so easy to install...this seems more of a proof of concept than a replacement for them. That damn cart slot is easily broken I wouldn't want to keep swapping out carts...even just for the purpose of flashing the cards themselves.
But. Maybe I'm missing something?

That's my take on it too.  But there are some people who consider any modification to a console sacrilege, or that don't want to touch a soldering iron at all.  I think this is a good solution for them, but modchip is so nice once you have it in.  Just pop in the CDR and gogogo!

I just tried with one of these

and it worked great. Will come in handy if I need to test something on my Japanese Saturn.

I hope you don't have official memory carts ;-)

I imagine most people run the action replay 4m plus instead, official cards are not real useful much nowdays. Since the pcb is also thicker on the aftermarket stuff you probably couldn't go back to stock anyway.

I have an extra one of these laying around. I'll have to give this a shot.
