Title: Retro-Sanctuary Top 100 Hucards and Top 50 CDs
Post by: lukester on February 26, 2015, 11:56:40 AM
These are two lists of the best games on each Turbo system. I think they are good lists, and each game gets a mini-review. RPGs aren't included unless in English though.

Good find! I been reading through it but not done yet. I'll report back soon.

I kind of skimmed through it. Pretty awesome stuff from what I could tell though. I think it is a nice little guide.

I initially saw this and got a laugh out of it. There aren't 100 TurboGrafx HuCards or 50 CDs. then I realized this post should have been put on the PC Engine board.

Edit:
It got moved. Thank you Necromancer.

I only skimmed the lists. Some odd choices, at times, which makes me think author has a lot more games to play.

But, really, I'm just sick of the ranking trope. I blame click-bait tactics at desperate websites for ruining Top 10/40/100 lists, forever.

Quote

Ys I & II
This includes improved versions of the first two games in the Ys series with new FMVs...

This is nitpicking, so I am not crucifying the author. But FMV (digitized video) was clearly not in our beloved Ys I & II.

I guess I might read more commentary to see if I can judge the author's tastes/reasons for liking a game...

IS CIRCUS LIDO. A fun game? I never really played it for too long...and it ranks higher than ALIEN CRUSH.

I just looked at his MegaDrive list and I noticed small patterns emerging: for example, he really likes some franchises, so Populous and Lemmings make it on his list for MD as well as PCE.

I can respect that. These are probably the games he really enjoys for each system. Again, I can respect that.

Too often, I feel that folks compose lists based on an aggregate of existing reviews/rankings.

Circus Lido is not more fun than Alien Crush. It isn't more fun than Keith Courage.

And yeah, ditto to everything you said.

I will also say that I find it odd that there are 100 HuCards listed (which is a huge number, btw) but "only" 50 CDs when there are significantly more CDs than HuCards.

Roms sets are easier to download and quickly sample in emulator than CD isos.

These lists are a nice reference when looking for a new game to play, but I don't agree with the rankings. I imagine it's the same for most people.

Also, only 50 CDs???  come on

I've been flipping through both of those, looking for suggestions for my next obey purchases.  'twas there I found out about Gomola Speed, Dorabian Nights, and EXILE!

Seriously, Exile might be my first CD game once I get a Duo.  I've been looking for a good action RPG & I'm all about that coca and kava.

It's fun, but it's not nearly as entertaining as Alien Crush and it's frickin' hard.

I have work to do today, but it is very tempting to just read both of these lists instead.

Edit: Just went through all of the HuCards.  Nice list.  I'm surprised that Magical Chase was so high, and that Galaga 88/90 was so low, but otherwise it was pretty good.  I wrote down several games that I'll be checking out in the coming days.

I've used this guy's lists as a starting point for getting into PCE, SMS and MD. He includes some questionable choices and I can't say I agree with the rankings at all but it's a good way to quickly find a bunch of games you're interested in.

Agreed. No list will ever match mine perfectly, so instead I look for perspective, and I do enjoy his perspective.

Just like anything it is a starting point to drive towards a direction.  Although I remember just lookin at the pc engine bible one by one, and see what would be worth owning or not worth owning.  All in all everyone's tastes and point of views are different.  Also it is always about the fun in the end, so enjoy ~

Great list but I would have put Blazing Lasers top ten.  Alien crush should have the list.
