Title: The Magical Component Video Box
Post by: turbokon on March 02, 2015, 11:49:09 AM
So someone built a box using the version 2 component board I sell.  The box plugs to the back of the turbografx-16/pce.  With custom quick disconnect cables, this box can also be used on a genesis, Sega master systems and snes.  I plan on building a few of these myself and offering them for sale here.  I will have enough parts to build 4 maybe 5.  Prices will be $100 before shipping for pce/tg16 only option.  Add another $25 for snes/genesis model 1/sms option.

2. Black Tiger

4. Facebook user
5. Synbiosfan

The box will look like this minus the label.  Not sure what my labels will look.

I'm torn. I could just get this. Or I could put the money to recapping and modding a CD system.

But....damn.

I really love this idea, but I have questions. I own a Duo, which doesn't have that expansion port, so would this include a cable that would allow me to use this?

Also, will this box cause any input delay while playing? I had a bad experience where I tried a SCART-to-HDMI box that caused input delay depending on the system.

And by the way, the Genesis 2 and 32X have a different video connector from the Genesis 1 and Master System. Have you considered that?

If this box will work without any issues on my Duo-RX, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis (with Sega CD and 32X), and SNES, without lag, I would most likely buy one.

Sorry Arjak, this won't work with any of the duo systems or super cd-rom2 attachment.  Those will have to be internally modded.  I will have to look into getting cables made for the genesis 2 and CDX.  I have never noticed any delay/lag on my TV sets.

Neat little box, but that price is a bit steep...

It's something the could be produced in bigger numbers and sold cheaper I'm sure there would be a market for such a thing.

The price is a bit high, but it would make life very convenient for me. I have a Core Grafx sitting here very lonely, it'd be good to hook it up to one of the flat screens with this or use it for recordings. Count me in plz.

even though it's not cheap, it is cheaper than an actual turbobooster but also has component output as well and works with other systems? price may be up there but i'd buy one if i had the extra money forsure!

Thanks guys but I can't take credit for this.  I may come down on the price a little but will see after I built them.  I'm also considering adding composite as well.

Some snes systems output black and white on composite. But the RGB lines seem to not be affected when this problem happens. At least the 3 that i have tested, they work 100% with the box

For the SNES/Genesis/MS that output RGB w/o a mod then this would be expensive. For the TG16 or PC Engine that would normally require a mod to get RGB i think the price is pretty fair and would not require you having to ship off your system to get it done. There was/is a kickstarter for component cables for the SNES/Genesis. I've been meaning to suggest to Turbokon to use his to RGB to component board and make some component cables. I for example would be interested in some for the Saturn.

Fyi, I normally charge $85 to install the component board with RCA's jacks and that doesn't include shipping both ways.

Your mods are great. Also the box is great. I like your site. Do you fix Sega CD ? Also have you played with having RGB out like SCART or JP21?

Thanks Grover, I don't work on other systems beside turbo's and pce's.  I'm currently looking into RGB's mods.

Maybe one option for the duo crowd is to add a din8 plug to it.  The duo systems will still require the rgb signals to be tapped and run to a din8 jack at the back that replaces the din5 that is stock.  No rgb amp needed just run the three wires.  Might be a simpler / cheaper mod that could be used with this box for convenience.

This is definitely an option for people who would like to use this box with their duo systems.

I could swear that RGB quality is different on the early to later model AES systems. That may, or may not, throw a kink in your plan.

Post by: GohanX on March 12, 2015, 05:43:59 AM
There are several revisions of Neo board, so yeah, quality can vary. Some need to be modded to get clean rgb.

A cd system may be a better test. The rgb pinout is the same, but video quality in cd systems are fantastic.

The Neo Geo did indeed have different RGB outputs.

Luckily I have an early unit and just use Scart.

For the Jaguar I use Scart as well but no idea for the revisions.

I asked because Saturn has R, G, B on the AV out.  Would it be a matter of having a compatible (10 pin mini-din) plug?

I watched the video and it simply confirmed how this component video box is exactly what I need to experience RGB without actually modding my consoles.

This is excellent. :)

Turbokon: Years ago, you(?), or someone else here (a regular?), had an extra PCE AV Booster and incorporated the RGB mod into it. I don't remember hearing about the performance/results of this device.

Do you remember anything?

Anyway, this new magical box is so damn versatile it is ridiculous.

The US GameCube doesn't do RGB out and the component requires a special chip that is included with the cable. That is why GameCube component cables are so expensive now. The best option is to get a backwards compatible Wii and use the component cable for that. Since the Wii has all the actual GameCube hardware it is literally the same thing.

Yeah, there is discussion on replicating the functions of that chip that have been outlined on another site.  I'm just waiting for some manufacturer to start cranking them out.

Update, I just built another box.  Took me a few hours just to built one, that's not including making the custom cables for the snes and genni.  So I will leave prices at $100 for the tg16/PCE only option and $25 additional for the snes and genesis model 1 cables.  Add another $10 for the CDX/nomad cables.
