How much does Dracula X go for these days? I have the opportunity to buy it for $130 US - is this a good price? Thanks!
-
Sounds like your typical over-priced eBay price.
Price chart currently shows it at 125.

Sounds decent meh-ish, either that or watch amazon closely? Got mine on there, maybe a little more than a year ago, I can't remember, for $80ish, maybe closer to $90, idk.

Hmph. Is the game actually rare or is it just in high demand?
-
It's pretty common as far as I know, just a lot of people want it because of it's reputation (one it's earned, to be fair).
-
A few years ago it was asking $200. I think with the PSP release, it has gone down. Personally, it's well worth $130...but I'm a died in the obey, true turbo fan. That being said, I got my copy for $40-50 from a local buddy that was downsizing(friend prices)...and the manual was is poor shape.
-
$130 is a decent deal but not a steal. Totally worth it.
-
Got mine a few weeks a go for $100 w/free shipping no spine label card thingy other wise CIB.
Trending around that range
-
$100 is a good deal. More value for your $ than a couple crappy X1 games.
-
You can definitely hold out for a better deal. That being said, this would be the best $130 you've ever spent on a video game.

You can get it for $9 (http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/uy227F600krVK7Lm9gu4yANI2QebV4kx).
-
While most 8-bit games went to $1 at some time in the 90s and then some rocketed towards a grand by 2015, Drac X never did this. When importers started carrying it in 1993 or whenever, it was $70-100. It has pretty much kept pace with inflation since then.
It's never hard to find. Never cheep, but it shouldn't be expensive either. It's not rare in the slightest, but it is the most widely popular and highly regarded game on PCE so once you have it most of the other good stuff is cheaper.
-
Burn a copy and wait for a better price.
-
Its $$$ right now because AVGN + Metal Jesus + Famicum Dojo

Doesn't work for us with finicky Duos. :/

I thought the original virtual console was kaput. Good to know it's still around.
-
WELL, GET A LESS FINICKY f*ckIN DUO THEN, AMANAPAPNAGHTR
-
$130 is a bit high, though strangely enough it seems like prices have crept up a bit. Seems like it used to average around $100 but I'm seeing more listings at $120-$130. I got mine for about $80 but it's been quite a while ago.
-

Pretty much. I think it's jumped about an average of 20-30 dollars since. The game itself isn't rare as it was made in relatively high numbers but it is very much in demand, more so now thanks to the agitated video game nubnubs.
-

It's modded, I'd rather just skip out on it then deal with burning issues. /me shrugs

I will buy your copy for $200. PM me.

I got mine at $92 a year ago

I won one recently for 140 with spine and registration. In quite minty shape, depending on the 130 if it is spined I would say that is a good deal. If not I say nay, then again I don't buy any pc engine CD game without its spine card. This was a copy I got for a buddy of mine.
-
So basically keep it between $95-130 and you are fine.
Anything higher then that and walk away less you wish to give sellers a seance of increased demand to jack prices higher for shits and grins.

One time I unknowingly bought a PC Engine CD game that was missing it's spine card. I ended up having to replace the laser in my Duo.
Spine card collectors are a special class of retard. I honestly do not know if my copy of Drac X has the spine card or not. Maybe I tucked it into the manual, maybe I don't have it in the first place. Who f*cking cares? It's not like we're talking about the hang tabs on Genesis games, or anything. What the f*ck kind of barbarian rips those off???

I gave all my spines to a "special class of retard" friend.

Spine cards are the PCE version of collection Turbob boxes.

I care about the presentation of my pc engine CD games, and I play my games as well. It just doesn't look appealing without it. I know some people don't care about them, but I care about the presentation because that is how they used to come when they were brand new.

I don't get it...
Not meaning to bust your balls, but how are you presenting them? The spine cards aren't staying on the outside unless glued or shrink wrapped....

If he has cellophane CD bag, or plastic case, he could keep the spine card in its proper place.
HOWEVER, it would become incredibly annoying to remove/replace games when you have to worry about crushing/bending the spine card.
Plus, I did not think that collectors would want the spine card to experience so much handling/potential damage.
-
Ya just gotta be careful, este.

Gotcha. :)

I would need to see some pics to understand why PC Engine games, on a shelf, look less appealing without the spine card. i guess my library of Turbo games looks like shit, then.

This is what I do. It's really not as much wear and tear or difficulty as you might think.
For a single CD case, when I pull out the case with the disc in it, the spine card just stays back in the corner of the poly bag and retains the shape of the case. As long as you don't jam the case back into the bag like a hillbilly on prom night it's not hard to just get the obi to match right back up when you put the game back after playing.
CONFESSION: I am an obi lover and will try to get games with them as frequently as possible, but I'm not gonna cry about missing them if I'm saving money over a copy without it. For my birthday last year (maybe 2 years ago?) I bought myself minty copies of Cotton and Drac X with spine and reg cards and I paid about $150 for the pair I think.
-
If people like spine cards, that's cool, but to me PCE games look kinda fugly and unnatural with them on. Especially a bunch of spined games in a row.
-
what's the point of collecting spine cards?
-
What's the point of collecting TG-16 boxes? Or cases and manuals even? It's cool if you don't want 'em (I personally don't give a poop one way or the other), but the reason some peeps want them is pretty obvious.
-
I don't give two Fuchs if a game has a spine card. I can't believe so many of those things survived in the first place. When I was a kid, that shit would be going in the trash with the cellophane.

Manuals still contain some original artwork and story that pertains to the actual game, understandable. Cases keep the game in a protective cover with original artwork. spine cards ____ ??

Well, yes, they look like weird Halloween decorations. That's got nothing to do with obi though, just that the "Turbo" alter ego of PCE was designed by blind men and idiots.

Gensou Tairiku Aurelia
JPN:五つの国を舞台に復讐の旅が始まる。戦乱の大陸オーレリアに安息の時をもとらす者は?
ENG: The stage towards revenge for the five kingdoms has been set.Who will be the one to restore peace to the continent of Aurelia once more?
It is something about these spine cards that just really look nice. Like with Anesan have the kanji for Ane on the bottom portion of the spinecard. Aurelia doing both pink and lime green to compliment the colors from the back of the cd case to the front brings character. BTW, Aurelia is a fantastic CDrom2 RPG which looks damn near super CD status. Ane san may not have been like a omg good game, but its got character and wanted to give examples of the cd rom games. Also to the Lost Monkey you weren't busting balls, it was a good question. Funny thing is I used to not be like this. One day I just got fed up, and sold off my pc engine/saturn and other jp cd games in order to gain them back with their spine cards. I think it is the fact that I love the pc engine, and it blew my mind when I bought it quite a few years ago now. I wanted to get these games in the way they came, and its fantastic to see these games being preserved in the way they came. That is my 2 sense
TL;DR

I got mine in a lot for $90 about 3 years ago. I suggest if you want a good deal lots are the way to go. Or just get the psp version for cheap:

I think that spine cards are interesting because they certainly are part of the original retail experience in Japan. It's fun and interesting to me, especially if I could read Japanese.
I don't feel the need to collect spine cards, but I would love to see them scanned and documented (as some folks have been doing).
-
Personally, I think they're cool additions to the games (although the few I have end up inside the case/manual). I don't collect them and I certainly wouldn't pay more for a game just because it has the spine card...or the reg card for that matter.
On topic: I think I paid around $105 for mine posted around 3/4 months ago.
-
I've got spine cards to a few of my games but I put them inside the manual or between the manual and plastic tabs on the inside of the case. They're cool to have but I certainly don't collect them nor would I pay extra for one.
-
When I wind up with a spine card I put it behind the rear insert under the CD case. I'm not going to go out of my way to throw them away or anything but at the same time I don't really have much use for them so I just stuff them out of sight.
-

Look at tknjin's two examples and you'll see that some spine cards have rudimentary art (even if it's just the game logo) and a short game description.
-
Shoot, I feel a little remorse for throwing out some spine cards now. Always just seemed like part of the packaging. I'll try to scan later ones and save them in the case if they fit

Yeah, some that are really well done will extend the cover art to the edge of the case. Sol Feace and Time Gal on the Mega CD are two examples I can think of off the top of my head.
@poponon, Don't stress out on it, it's not like your game will no longer worth without the obi or something. I like to keep them because they're a neat addition, but they add nothing to the gameplay. :P
-
Was a year or two ago, but I think I got my copy of the game for like $89 or something about that range.
-
All in all it will be worth the 130 you spend on the game because trust me you will always pop that game back into your PC engine many times just to play it through. Also I would make sure that the CD case has not really yellowed because you are throwing down some hard cash.

It is super easy to get a replacement white CD tray.
Edit:
THREAD UPDATE: I just checked, and my copy of Drac X does have the spine card. Thank f*ck for that. I was about to just throw the whole f*cking thing in the garbage. I had a quick look through the rest of my collection, which I now realize is worthless, for the most part.

I just replaced my yellow-ing cd tray on my Drac X with a much whiter one. Now the value has gone up by at least $20!

Oh gosh, spine cards... I feel like if the game has it then cool! If it doesn't, who cares? As far as displaying them goes, I'm with Black Tiger on this. Unless these games are displayed facing outward, (like on a wall maybe) side-by-side in a shelf would just look unappealing and asymmetrical to me. Not to mention that if I wanted to play a game, I would just... want to play it, not turn it into the ritual of carefully unpacking part of a mantle piece of LOOK I HAZ COMPLEET GAME. Don't get me wrong, if you do collect spine cards, good for you. You like 'em cuz you like 'em and that's all that should matter. For me, I got to live in the heyday of this console and have had the pleasure of opening that new game, whatever that game was, for the first time. And I'll never forget that feeling.
Back on subject, I got my second copy of Dracula X on YA for 7900 yen plus 1600 yen with fees and shipping, I had sold my original (and not so pristine) copy in 2007 and have long since regretted it until I got this last copy. They were obi-less but back then no one gave a crap, or we were all young and dumb. Prolly the latter :P

LOL! I had an old co-worker who told me he used a straight razor on all of his genisis cases back in the day.
It's ok tknjin, I don't judge even though that is pretty obsessive compulsive.
To display all my games I use a couple of these:

As much as I would love to, I just wouldn't feel right about it. I don't want to be part of the problem. I frequently read the retrogaming-related subreddits on Reddit, and the sheer number of people there who want to know how much they can get for whatever game they just found, followed by replies instructing them to start off with overpriced BINs, is astounding. And these are the people who are trying to build up collections. It's like they don't understand that they are the reason that they are paying so much money for shit on eBay.
-
You could totally get $20 for the spine card. You wouldn't be ripping anyone off, either; for someone who actually wants the spine card to "complete" their copy, that would be (by far) the cheapest way they could get one.
-
I'm gonna be honest here, I paid someone $20 shipped for a drac X spine card lol
I got my Drac though for $60 on ebay so it's like a got a spiney copy for $80 or that's at least how I justified it

Mine was $81 shipped. Seller listed as not including spine, but it was behind the tray. This was in 2012.
I balked at paying $70 ($80.50 total) plus tax from a local store back in 1995 and opted for an HK silver for $5 instead.... I ended up paying roughly the same price in 2012...

This is 100% the problem in my opinion too. Professional resellers are lame, but what has driven the prices up so high are people that buy a bundle of shit at a garage thrift sale, then try and sell it back at the highest price the market will bear so they can recoup cost and/or make cash to dump into buying more collection items.
News flash dumbasses, if everyone keeps raising the prices to get the "top dollar" amount, prices go up in general and everyone suffers.

Hehe. Oh well. At least you've been playing the game since 95. Better than not playing it at all. I was lucky and got it for xmas in 93. I'm sure it was $70 as well. I think my bro had my parents get it from Die Hard Gamers Club. I believe it was Game Cave by then.

How much does Dracula X go for these days? I have the opportunity to buy it for $130 US - is this a good price? Thanks!
seems like you in Hong Kong, US$130 ( HK$1000) is a bit pricey for castlevania, in the shops, I have seen it as low as HK$800 in shop with spine card some time ago, however, most gamers in hong kong use a facebook group to avoid a lot of the expensive stores, I have seen it as low as HK$600 without spine card
if you use the commonly used online auctions in HK, avoid the rip off seller with hundreds of listings and no bids, the gamers avoid this seller like the plague due to stupid prices

Yep, indeed I'm in HK. $1000 is the cheapest I've been quoted from a store. The guy said he doesn't have any copies of it yet and needs to "order it from Japan" first. My friend in Japan did a price check and the cost was $120 US.
Facebook groups, huh? Any chance of a link? :)

sadly most Chinese, but most do understand basic English (ie, buy/ 要 copy and paste this), first come first serve, you need to join the group, there are a few overseas Chinese ( who can't read chinese ) and odd westerner here
there are a lot of bargains, but some items which are popular by demand by hk locals are not cheap here, but other are much cheaper than US, Japan or Europe
however, pc engine items are not as common here ( but more common than us and europe, not including rip off sellers ), lots of super famicom, ps2, ps1, Saturn, etc
some rare stuff occasionally pops up
note. some bargains are snapped really really quickly , remember copy and paste (要 = means want) for the items you want to buy on offer.

It's also noted that this ebay based seller in japan ships to HK, reasonable prices and some good rare and really rare stuff ( but the bids can be really high)

I noticed PC Engine Dracula X price has never really changed. It costs approximately the same now as what I paid for it on import when it was released. It is one of the greatest games of all time, so I've always expected the price to rocket but it never has. My only conclusion is it's truly not a rare game at all. There's always enough copies about to meet demand, so the price has never increased.
I think a kind of similar thing about Sega Saturn Radiant Silvergun, which over the last 15 years has got to be one of the most hyped import retro games. Yet with all the hype the price seems to remain static to what it cost in 2001. Again there must be enough copies about to meet demand.
Where I have noticed recently a massive increase in price is in Super Famicom games, it's crazy. A large percentage of the library has tripled or even quadrupled in price within the last two years. I'm not talking only eBay here, I mean also the prices in Japan itself. I think one factor is because of the delicate cardboard boxes they came in, finding good condition complete ones has become more and more scarce.
-
I thought that was already established, games like Drac X and Radiant are not rare, is just the supply is in the hands of a few (sort of).
-
Not long ago, Drac X was going for $75 for what seemed like s few years.
Radiant Silvergun is not rare at all and was very cheap during the 90's. Most EBs had several copies and they were sold for very little above the price of domestic games. Just like Sylphia, once the "shump!" sayers were told that these games were actually developed by teams who worked on famous schtroumpfs, they all suffered permanent brain damage and have employed gougers ever since.
Sylphia in particular is a game I talked about a lot and showed what I could of it, but most reactions were simply "meh" and the most it ever sold for was $30 - $40. For it to jump straight to $200 - $300 is as unnatural as it gets and the game is now a monument to collectardation.

I wish I bought Sylphia when I had a chance, back before the insanity.
I used to think $50-60 was way too much.
Ughhhhh.

I managed to pick up a copy for £65 last year (mint condition too), and I almost baulked at paying that. 12 months later and it seems to be selling for almost double.
It's a dangerous thing as it kind of supports this thing in my head that if I want it, then I'll just have to buy it. These things don't seem to be getting any cheaper.
So, basically I am part of the problem ](*,)

Just checked and PC Engine Dracula X does seem to be selling for a bit more recently.
But I would say though that 98% of the Japanese PC Engine library has not gone up in price in years.
The really common games are definitely cheaper because of all those large 100+ game lots that have been on eBay over the last few years from sellers like hit-japan, it's completely saturated the western market with the cheap common games. Overall all the other games I would say are either the same static price or if anything slightly cheaper than a few years ago. There's a very small handful of games that have increased in price. One of these is Tatsujin which has shot up in price.

After the PSP version and Wii Virtual Console version came out prices on it tanked. Until looking through this thread I was unaware they had spiked again.

Yep, after the Saturn died in North America a lot of EBs, Babbages and Software ETC started carrying Saturn imports, Action Replays and ST keys. I remember seeing the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night, Radiant Silvergun, the various Capcom fighting games for sale in 1998 or so in regular indoor mall game shops.

You know it's interesting, it seems like shooting type games really do have their own bubble within a bubble going on currently. It used to be that retro RPGs were the the games that commanded the highest prices by genres, but shooters have been going through the roof.
I think like 90% of the current Genesis inflation that's going on right now is based purely on the shooters in the system's library. Also applicable to a lot of PCE stuff as well.
-
I do think this is related to the available games to the public on modern consoles. Resogun is the only mainstream shmup that comes to mind (I'm sure there are more, but not on the front page of the PSN store for example) I think a lot of people look to the past for games they haven't played when the new releases don't appease their desires. More modern shmups would probably affect people's inclination to go back to older shmups and play them. With the rise of mobile RPGS, indie JRPG's, and generally a lot of new RPGs out there (Tales series, Ni No Kuni, etc) that there is less of a desire to go dig out old "new to me" games for that genre. Only reason I think this hasn't happened to action platformers is that this style has never dried up - it's a indie darling genre that's constantly flooded with great new titles.

RPGs and Shoot em ups age well.
Other genres of games generally don't age quite as well. RPGs are still being made, but you can get the same fun experience from a 20 year old RPG as a brand new one. That can't generally be said for sports, action games, early FPS's, or fighting games.
-
RPGs and Shoot em ups age well.
Perhaps it's just nostalgia talking here, but I honestly don't feel that technology and time have been very kind to these two particular genres. I realize that Cave and Touhou games have their audiences, but modern shooters feel like a giant mess to me. I can't even enjoy looking at the screen as they are generally covered so liberall-y with projectiles that I can't make sense of anything.
Meanwhile, RPGs are a genre that I just can't play on systems from about PS2 onward. I still love 8, 16, 32 bit RPGs but most RPGs made in more modern times simply irritate me more and more. At some point during, say, the 32 bit era it became the vogue thing for the story sequences to become longer, more involved, and (to me) way worse.
I can boot up old favorites or find new-to-me games from the era in these two genres and have an enjoyable experience. That being said the more recent Final Fantasy, Tales, Star Ocean, etc I just can't enjoy them the same way. There are exceptions of course. Yeah, they're both a bit old by this point but I thought Gradius 5 was fantastic and likewise for Dragonquest 9. I guess my point is these two genres work just as well on older hardware and for that reason prices have gone up or at least stayed relatively consistently high. Sometimes there's just no need for an upgrade when what you've got is perfectly serviceable.

They're two genre's that don't benefit greatly from improvements in graphics or processing power. So a well designed RPG or Shoot em up from the 16-bit era and a well designed RPG or Shoot em up from today differ almost only in presentation.

Unless the developer feels the need to add unnecessarily. I prefer the 8/16 shooters over modern day ones due to generic shifts. Today's shooters generally prefer the twitchy bullet hell with bright, colorful bullets, while I like my shooters like Striker 1945 or Sonic Wings, fast action, feeling like you're actually navigating a barrage of enemies, not some slow-moving glow sticks.
With RPGs, it seems the worst of the old games (grinding, fetch quests) either got worse or were almost entirely eliminated. Balance is largely lost, and the genre feels like it has descended into stereotypes. Granted, it was never that innovative to begin with.

It seems like $170-300 depending now f*cking stupid the noob in question is at any given time.
Honestly, not really that bad considering there are 1000 new PCE people every year, apparently all pissed off that PCE prices aren't what they were the year before, ignoring the obvious fact they them getting into PCE is the reason the price went up.

I found this locally on Saturday with the Tennokoe bank.
So this means they valued the game at about 140$ or so.
I couldn't leave it there for some f*ckup to buy and resell for the eBay prices.
Anything from 120-150$ is "OK" right now, but still a bit mental.
The game has always been pricey, though.
This price was cheaper than what it's been going for in Japan lately, too. Sometimes, the Exchange f*cks up in our favor.

And would the tranny in your avatar approve?
Lol every time I see that avatar I remember that thread someone made of "her". Then fail at remembering "her" name.
However I am sure "she" is happy to have the use of a public bathroom that she can used based on "her" gender "she" identifies with.

Sadly either I was lacking in the funny department or my sarcasm was off point. Possibly both

Instead of buying food for a month, put it towards an original Dracula X.
Long after you shat out the final remnants of that food, you'll be enjoying Dracula X.
Why do you think I skip all my meals (except breakfast)?
Sure, I'll develop health issues, but...don't we all, anyway?
I am only half-joking, by the way.

Esteban,
I own most castlevanias, but not Dracula x. My cdr English and original Japanese burns play without issue, I also have both Bernie bias releases, which are what I use when I play now, so would it not be collectarded of me to take a copy off the market? Is it not folly to skip meals for a game I can play identically already though various means?

Back to the actual OP question, I'd say that current prices are higher for sure, but it's still worth getting.
I know a lot of the older collectors were able to get this title for around $80 (Myself included) back in the day, but I doubt it will snap back anytime soon. Not with the current retro-game craziness going on anyway. I don't know if the game will hit Sylphia level crazyness in terms of price, but I can't see it getting cheaper. You just have to judge the quality of the game, the current price, and the likelihood of you getting it cheaper in the future.
I can tell you one thing, if you consider $100~$130 expensive, you better start moving! Bazaru de Gozaru, Dead of the Brain, and a host of other games have already blown passed this mark and are genuinely less common. It's all a matter of when you want to dig your feet in... like investing in stocks. You can get in with the early investors, or later. But the longer you wait, the less benefits you'll get.
PS: In my humble opinion, when you talk about $100-$130, that's still in the impulse-buy zone for me. Especially if your someone who works and has a full time job. It's only when you get into $200+ territory that I start to think about purchases in a much more critical way. Consider joining the club, while things are still (in the grand scheme of things) "affordable". :-D

the op is in Hong Kong, Dracula x is well known and in demand, hence the price,
but Bazaru de Gozaru, Dead of the Brain are not well known, thus, if it appears on yahoo hong kong auctions chances that these obscure games end with low prices
-
Nobody knows the numbers but Dracula X would seem to be 100 times as common as Bazaru and Slyphia. Those are crazy hard to find games. Until recently the price has always reflected this. Lots of people here have Drac X, maybe two people here have Bazaru. I've personally never seen a copy. Dead of the Brain was at least obviously on the market (quite a few people were shocked when it was announced) but Bazaru is this thing...who actually remembers when it came out? I never saw an ad for it. The PCE magazines were discontinued by then. I used to watch anime taped of Japanese TV a lot back then, never saw an advert.
I seriously hope the noob retro gamers don't take your attitude because if they do you can forget this game staying below $300.
