I have paid attention to US games but not of the Japanese ones.
Are there any must haves, must plays from the PCE side of the console?
I do not have a mod for playing the Japanese cartridges yet so cd-rom based ones are most preferred.
I enjoy shmups but love old schooll rpg's. The problem is I cannot read another language except English. So if it is a game that needs reading I would prefer if there was a translation guide I could follow. Or would google translate suffice in such cases?
Thanks for suggestions for games for me to try.

What CD formats can you play? CD2, SCD?
These are great RPGs with detailed English guides:
Neo Metal Fantasy
Tengai Makyou Fuun Kabuki Den
Tengai Makyou II
Anearth Fantasy Stories
Legend of Xanadu II (Ys style)
Ys IV (fully fan translated)

Well, I have the US version of the TurboDuo. So I assume I can play all import cd's except for ones that require the arcade card.

Spriggan <- must have! and cheap
Star Parodier and Drac X are good for anyone's collection. Unfortunately, I'm on a HuCard kick and have not been getting my CD on. If you played Military Madness on Turbo, the JP SCD sequel(Neo Nectaris) is totally playable in moon runes.

How about hu cards only, which allow two player co op?

There are so many great CD and SCD games.
Damn.
Necro will tell you to get Gotzendeiner.
I'll tell you to get Neo Nectaris.

All CD2 and SCD games:
Rayxanber II
Valis IV
Valis Phantasm Soldier
Download II
Macross 2036
HellfireS
Forgotten Worlds
Cosmic Fantasy 3
Everything Black Tiger said.
and Spriggan like majors said.
Spriggan can be had for around $55-60 and that is usually high.
Also, please visit http://www.pcengine.co.uk/ (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/) It is a good source to check out games you might find interesting

Plenty of games that require little or no Japanese.

Color Wars.
The most fun you'll have in your freakin' life.

Batman is a great puzzle kinda game. Parodius and Cotton are great shooters.

I echo all that Majors has already posted.

I would recommend Download, Jigoku Meguri, shubibiman/shockman 1 and 2(3rd game is CDrom2), Aoi/Blue Blink, Zipang, and of course PC genjin/Bonk

I really appreciate the suggestions. Seems there are enough to try and most likely hold my attention for a while.
I am just feeling so stoked about getting back into the TurboDuo as I used to play this console almost non-stop when we got it. I have always loved this console. Glad there is such a great community around it.

Comrade, there are many threads listing games that are "recommended" by forum members...a kind soul may link to more of them.
But you can also search for "top 5" "top 10" lists, "underrated" an "under-appreciated", too, for even more goodness.
