I think most people already know of the red Hu variant of Champions Forever Boxing, but does any one know if it had a different barcode than the black label? I stumbled upon the following in my search for the answer.
The common one:
TGX040077
092218001368
The unknown:
TGX040074
092218001337

The box seems identical to the common one outside of the barcode and serial. I do not own the box...

Interesting... I have them both so I'll hook up my Turbo with RF and let you know.
-
The black label Hu had the audio issues and the red played fine.
-
I think it is awesome that we are still finding new things about turbo games.
+1 for OP.
-
Ditto on the remarkable find.
BTW, this thread reminded me of the time me and friend met Joe Frazier about 15 or so years back at a fundraiser. He was really cool and down to earth. And just before we left, my friend asked, "Which hand did you use to put Ali on his ass?" Joe smiled, held up his left fist and starting nodding. It was great!
-
For anyone willing to test their copy, the audio issues only crop up when playing via a RF cable on the TG16.
-
If the different boxes aren't for the different colored label releases, perhaps one of 'em is the Canuck version.

Interesting. Any chance you could make a little comparison video for those of us with only Duos and/or only one version?
-
You're most likely correct, but not all Canuck versions were different. Look at Darkwing Duck - same box with nothing but stickers to label it as a Frenchy version and replace the UPC.

sorry about some of the quality... I was just trying to do a quick capture on my phone.
The video doesn't do justice to how craptastic the audio actually sounds between the versions during the opening song.

Thanks, man. That's a pretty big difference.
-
How many Canadian box variants had a different TGX number? Were they usually just French added to the box and/or a different barcode?

Thanks for making the video! I didn't know it was only RF that exhibited the problem (what is the technical reason for that, anyway?)

The 6-channel high quality sample-based audio requires NEC's patented "Turbo Boosting" technology, which wasn't developed until after the launch of the base hardware.

^ Hahahhahahajja. TurboProcessing. Gotcha. :)

as i was reading the first page, all i could assume is that esteban had another child to this thread.

I have a Canadian box, and it has a sticker on the front that says "this game requires turbo booster"
The back has TG040074 and the barcode sticker for canadian releases starting with the numbers 059.
It's the black hucard. I remember renting this game as a kid and returning it because the sound was messed up. At the time my turbo was connected with the RF connector. So it seems the sound works fine with the turbo booster but not the RF.

That disclaimer sticker reminds me of that one Intellivision Baseball game with the bug that they couldn't fix. They just shipped the game as-is and made a note in the manual that the bug was due to the cutting edge technology.
Monster Maker at least describes in detail how to avoid the game-breaking bug. I don't know if the other bugs are mentioned. :P
-
So its looking more and more like TGX040074 was the original batch of Hu's with the glitch. And the Canadian version had a barcode sticker... So is it safe to assume the US box was identical minus the stickers?
Now if we can find someone with an original red Hu in box.
-
So is it safe to assume the US box was identical minus the stickers?
Yes, most of the boxes released later on were the same except for the barcode sticker, and the round sticker on the front the says "directives en francais" Also, instead of having a second full color manual in french, they had black and white fold out instructions in french. And no french on the back of the box, whereas earlier releases had french and english on the back of the box. I think it was a cheaper more cost effective solution for them to just use the same box and slap the "directives en francais sticker" on there and throw in the french fold out instructions.
as for the other sticker that says the game must be used with turbo booster, could be that it was a quick fix for them to put the stickers on if the game infact had a glitch. Or i'm thinking it could have been intentional on their part to make u buy the turbo booster. The sound is pretty cool on this game and does sound enhanced compared to other games.

LOL. if this game "made" anybody buy a turbo booster, they deserved the extra cost incurred.
-
There is a career mode in CFB, so the Booster can help with that (saving progress).
-
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if you tap the audio off the back of the EXT port where the composite and AV are do you still get the glitchy sound? I always thought the original TurboBooster was just a pretty passthrough device for the EXT signals.
-
This is one of the most awesome threads I've been to in a while. Thanks for sharing this info and making the videos.
-
I nearly forgot about this... But yes, I remember (attempting) to rent this title as a young'in and being told it needs the TurboBooster or it would run slow(?). lol I will confirm that it worked flawlessly on the TurboExpress, though.
-
!!!
That's pretty noticeable. Is it only on RF? I wonder what causes that weird audio sample glitch.
-
I did not know about this, thanks for sharing the info and the vids :-)
-
Yes, this thread is super-cool.

I'd be very curious to hear from people who have composite/component modded their TG16's or tap directly from the external interface.
