Title: Music videos RUIN most songs
Post by: esteban on April 25, 2015, 02:38:57 PM
THESIS: Songs should be experienced as God intended--active listening with little to no distractions.

BLAH BLAH: I really do not like it when amazing songs  are utterly eviscerated by pathetic videos. I am not talking about budget/effects...I'm talking about lame concepts, formulas, etc.

It's hard enough to create an amazing song.

It's triply impossible to create an amazing video to accompany the song.

The problem is that even an "amazing video" actually DETRACTS from the song, as far as I am concerned.

I am a melancholic hermit, I guess. I feel that songs are best appreciated with little to no distractions. JUST PURE GLORIOUS MUSIC BATHING YOU.

This means it is NOT BACKGROUND MUSIC.

Background music is simply background music. It certainly has its place.

I AM TALKING ABOUT ACTIVELY LISTENING TO GLORIOUS MUSIC AND APPRECIATING IT. For me, this must be done with me, alone, with my tunes.

SORRY, but anyone who disagrees with me is SO F*CKING WRONG. :)

Really depends honestly.  In the case of Wink, it wasn't just about the music, it was about creating an image, the music is just part of the image.

I prefer this song without the video. It has more credibility that way. I am not convinced the young ladies should even be in front of a camera, let alone in as video. This distracts me from the actual song, which I can't resist because it offers pure 80's formula.

I am not saying it is a strong song, that can stand on its own...but I take it more seriously sans video.

:)

As for Massive Attack...that particular song is beautiful, making it triply difficult to create a video worthy of it.

WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND A SONG WHERRE THE CIDEO DOES NOT DETRACT FROM IT.

Post more videos! :)

I'd rather have this:
Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me (1991) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EprQGmZ3Imw#)

I love that the video didn't mince its condemnation of televangelists. I think that was great. :)

But, you can't help but feel that the song's true beauty was its "happy sweet" packaging...the video is pretty heavy-handed. Still, since a lot of folks don't pay attention to lyrics, it was probably important for the video to make the message blatant.

:)

I like them as long as they are just like people dancing and capturing the music style and era. I hate live music though, almost every time I see a band live I dislike them after it. Live music ruins most bands/songs

So far, only Fishheads video is worthy, because it is so surrealistic...it makes sure that you know it isn't simply an average kid's song.

Which is funny, because a local children's radio program used to play it all the time back in the day (Kids America, WNYC, 80's).

It also makes sure that you know that rolly-polly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with oriental women.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That is the greatest line, especially because it was ahead of its time. It pre-dates Starbucks mainstream phenom by a few years. So, it was just about cappuccino. And the sophisticadi who indulged in them whilst waiting for the valet to bring the Porsche around front.

I said the same thing (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/225775-80s-music-videos-ruining-the-song/?p=2997370) about 80s videos, but honestly, it really applies to any decade. Even Hozier's Church is better, imo, without the video. The video is far, far less subtle.

Videos are only good if there's good tits to look at.

Without You - Mark Gormley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87nkJquHnAU#)

video enhanced power stance you cannot deny

The background at 1:30 is currently my desktop background.   I'm..... uncomfortable.

Can't tell from that song, but the man has talent. "Stars" easily could have been a hit in 1975.

I listen to a lot of hardcore and metal. Both genres which I believe should best be seen/heard live. So music videos like this capture the energy much better than a CD.
