So I've had this game in my collection for a while now and most of the time whenever I put it on I always lose every time the cpu to wondering how the heck do you play this game?? Well I started playing this again and now that I've spent some time with it. It's actually pretty good gameplay wise.
So the pc engine version comes with 3 game modes; arcade, championship (play against colored teams: Blues, Greens, Yellows, Blacks) Shot Race (20 seconds to score goals).
The gameplay is pretty simple. A team consisting of Goalie, Offence and Defence you control mostly the Offence (most of the time) and Goal player (to some extent) VS a similar team. The object is simply to score as many goals using luck, some skill and violence!
The control buttons: I - pass/save. II - shoot/check.
You'll mostly be using the button II for shooting and for a special attack to incur violence! (each character has their own special attack on the ice rink) You'll need violence to win!!

Button II will also be used for slapping the puck around but hold it down for 5 seconds while the puck is in your possession and your hockey stick will turn yellow! (you'll might end up doing a super shot to the goalie)

Fights usually and randomly seem to break out, use both buttons and mash them you can also aim the direction left or right but I've still not worked this out on how to win yet. On losing your player might be weak for a little while. (At least I think they are fighting in that pic.. or are they getting it on with one another)??

You can also do super shots, dive for the puck, score a hat trick.
Avoid stuff being thrown onto the ice, they cause you to fall ! Things like broken bottles, food and Octopuses...
If you are losing by 5 points. You might find a power-up called Super Drink that will give you power shots for a short time.
The effects of.... What was in that drink ??

Graphically well it's a step down from the arcade daddy and there are things missing graphically, smaller sprites the audio is s step down too, But at least there is scorchy but charming sampled speech and drums!
Anyway give it a go, It get's kinda hectic while the rounds are quite long at around 5 minutes, you'll need to win 3 times to win the game.

Don't get to close to the rival team's goalie, you'll get pushed over!

press both buttons I & II to dive save.

Nice write-up!

I haven't really played much of any home versions of this game. I did play it in the arcade BITD.
Your post actually inspired me to play a sports game!
Not that I have played it yet.

you guys should give it a try. I wasn't able to understand it at first because I just kept losing all the time and now I've spent time with it. It's actually quite fun in short spurts. I just wished there was an option to change the time for each of the rounds. I definitely prefer the audio (even though it's quite lowly sampled). over the genesis version any day) !

Great writeup!! This is very nostalgic to me as this was one of my first Turbo Games back in the 90's when I bought my Turbo Express. I love this game.
