Title: Good Snes game hacks?
Post by: lukester on May 24, 2015, 05:27:08 AM
Kinda interested in the Mario world and super metroid hacks, but there are dozens!

Any here an expert on hacks? Which ones are good, not relying on speed running techniques, good length, etc.

I've not played any SNES hacks, mostly because I don't have the means currently.

However, the guy at the local game store tried to sell me a repro copy of "super Metroid zero mission", claiming that it's basically Zero Mission for the SNES.  After doing some research...I really don't think that's the case.  A lot of background graphics were changed & probably the map, but not much else.  They couldn't even be bothered to hack Samus' sprite.

That's really what deters me from most hacks.  I know a lot of labor goes into them, but a lot of times they just seem like an afterthought.  Like, "oh, you like this game?  Well we switched around the graphics & level layout so you can have a TOTALLY NEW EXPERIENCE with it!"

The best hack I've ever played/owned is Metroid Mother on the NES, which uses improved sprite art from the MDBtroid & 'Roidz hacks, as well as a mini map & the ability to stack beams and save your game in place of the password system.

This is all my personal taste, though.  I know lots of people who'd probably jump at the opportunity to play through Super Metroid or Mario World with alternative levels/difficulty.

Mega Man X3 Zero Project 3.0

Lets you play as Zero throughout the entire game.

Link is in post near bottom of page.

Or Link to the Past. Or a ton of other games for different systems. I see them like expansion packs. But they have to be really well done for me to buy them. So far I haven't purchased a single one, but I've been thinking about Super Metroid Redesign for its supposed breadth.

Super Metroid Redesign is a solid hack, but like most others, the difficulty is over the top.

I wish I could find a SM hack that could be realistically played through on a console. I plan to give MSZM a try eventually.

I just discovered these this afternoon in a game grumps episode. Brutal Super Mario World is one I'd buy right now...if I had $50 to throw away on a game I've essentially bought 3 times already. I really dislike the prices on hacks.

Anyone know a cheap place to pick them up on cart? The best I can find upon searching is still about $45 shipped ($38 for the Brutal SMW cart).

My local retro store sells most SNES repros for $30 & they have some hacks.  I can see what they have next time I go & let you know.
