Title: Has this happened to you?
Post by: airsoftmodels on May 26, 2015, 03:17:13 PM
I went to Einstein bagels today which I frequently go to.  Out of the blue, the manager asked me if I play video games.  I told him I play retro/vintage video games only.  I told him I have an Atari 8 bit and Apple II computer which I play games on.  Then I asked him if he has ever heard of the Turbografx-16?

He says are you kidding, I talked my parents into getting me the TurboDuo when I was a kid!  He then mentioned a handful of games he remembers having such as Valis.  We went back and forth naming off great games for the TG-16.  That was the highlight of my day today.  When I go back, I will probably talk to him some more about his TurboDuo.

I was talking to a guy at work the other day about games and mentioned Ys. Turns out he was well aware of the TG16 and actually owns a PC Engine now. Blew my mind, I really didn't see that coming.

The closest I've ever gotten was when a coworker told me he used to own a Master System & Genesis, then we talked about Landstalker for a little bit.  Never have I met anyone that knows anything about the 16 graffiks which are turbo.

A friend and I had both been collecting games for a while before we found out the other person was doing so.

I found out a coworker has a 3DO and likes to play Gex. That was a surprise.

I love meeting people that also know what the Turbo Grafx16 is.

Nope, I'm not pretty enough to get hit on by random dudes at bagel shops.

I try to keep my gaming power level hidden at this point, I used to talk about it a lot when I would go to functions and stuff but I realized most people were bored and didn't really care.

There are some exceptions though, if I'm someplace like a con or something obviously there is a greater incidence of people who are interested, or if I'm wearing a gaming themed t-shirt and someone is interested I am happy to talk.

Though I think almost no one really local to me knows about PC Engine, except for some forumites up in Denver ;). I even started to talk about it at the local retro game shop to some employees and I could just see their eyes glaze over...

For them, 'retro' probably means 'ps2 and dreamcast'.

Or "NES, SNES, and Sega."

I've never met anyone yet who knew what the Turbografx was.  If I ever talk to anyone my age, a tad younger or older I get the usual nintendo/sega answer.  Haha, but usually now it's like what Necro said with ps2, dreamcast.  Now it's probably mostly a region thing.  I am in North Carolina but when I was in Ohio when I was younger the Turbo was all over the place. Quite a few had them in my neighborhood.  What was nice back then was we liked all the systems and no one in my area really hated any one system.

I know no one personally that has even played PCE or TG16. I like it that way.

Well hello, fellow Tarheel.  You're right, NC is a veritable Turbo desert.

lol... glad i'm not the only one who thought bagel boss was on a sausage quest.

If someone on a sausage quest knew enough to mention TG-16 Valis, I'd sleep with him her.

Only one co-worker actually played TG-16 back in the day! I am jealous you discussed Valis, because the guy I work with only had a handful of HuCARD games.

It is very depressing that most people I meet have no clue what TG-16 was/is.

I've had so many conversations about various computer/console platforms, but rarely TG-16.

I don't think I've ever had a conversation about XaviX, either, come to think of it. THAT IS DEPRESSING. The TG-16 should never be at the low level of XaviX.

I have a PC engine shirt I use to sniff out TurboGrafx fans. I know it is not right to the point but if they know PC Engine then they really know TurboGrafx. Also it is obscure enough people don't have an idea. Those that ask I size up their reaction.

I occasionally have similar encounters when random people notice my PC Engine tattoo.

There's also the story about the maid of honor at my buddy's wedding who bragged to me about owning a TG-16 bitd, even though she was totally unaware that I knew anything about it beforehand.

She didn't know of your love of TG-16 and she started talking about it? That's awesome. :)

Last time this happened to me is when I was in my 20's and worked at LameStop.  Except the guy turned out to be a total creep and kept asking if I wanted to come over to his house...
