Title: Who has played Gunlord?
Post by: Desh on June 14, 2015, 03:28:09 PM
So I have played a few of NG.DEV.TEAM's great shooters on the Dreamcast as my friends are big fans. We were talking about them last night and my buddy says, "Hey they made a run and gun game for DC and Neo Geo."
I thought well hell, that's my shit and impulse purchased one on ebay. Some of the videos I've seen it looks like Mega Turrican and Contra mated. It looks awesome!
So my question is have any of you played it and what are your thoughts?

IMO, it feels more Turrican and less Contra. It really has that Turrican feel, but I haven't played it long enough to decide whether I like that. I think last time I played it, perhaps for an hour or two, I turned it off and went to play Super Metroid instead.
If you really dig the Turrican series, it should be a solid "revived" entry.

Just what the world needed: more Turricant.

I should enjoy it then. The original Turrican and Super Turrican are average in my eyes. Super Turrican 2 is better but Mega Turrican is the best in the Turrican series imo.

I think it's ngdev best game. The graphics, music, etc are all top notch. I like it more than some turrican games.

I absolutely love GunLord, to the point that after falling in love with the DC version, I bought the MVS LE release from someone on the Neo forums. The whole game is a love letter to the Turrican series, so if you don't like those games then Gunlord may not be for you.
Here's a video review I did several months ago:

Hahaha... yours was one of the reviews I watched. I actually have watched quite a few of your vids. I didn't realize it was you, perhaps I should pay more attention to forum sigs.

You'll love it Desh. It's one hell of a Turrican-esque title.

Yeah its one of those games I need to purchase at some point though I'm not so sure I'll pony up the $$$ for the MVS version.

Dare I ask, how did the AES release work? It's a homebrew game, right? What did it cost new, etc?

Every time NGDEVTEAM announces a new game, some people feel the need to defend their Neo Geo pricing. It looks like they've dropped the facade of not intentionally gouging collectards.

I love that neo games are still being made but far too expensive, especially Kraut Buster which looks bad IMHO.
I agree. Kraut Buster looks *ok*, but unless you've played every Metal Slug game to the point of boredom, I can't see picking it up when those games are all around 10x cheaper. I only sprung for Gunlord because I love the Turrican games and the price of Gunlord just kept going up. I can always sell it for what I paid, although I guess you can say that about all NG:Dev releases.

I think that has more to do with the fact that the Dreamcast versions have all been ripped and released on the warez scene.
Same thing that immediately happened to every PCE CD homebrew.
If DC sales were too poor, then so be it. But a better solution would be to do a smaller pressing. I find it hard to believe that they had difficulty selling 250 copies of any one DC title, unless they were asking $150 a copy.

The DC ports were actually very reasonably priced. I originally bought Gunlord for the DC and it was somewhere around $35 shipped. My guess is that it is a combination of DC sales (with their lower profit margin) taking away from Neo sales, or the games being released on the warez scene (does anyone even call it that anymore or did I just date myself?) taking way from Neo sales.

So make less Neo. DC > Neo anyway.

I got this bad boy in the mail today. I have to say I am very happy with this game so far. The weapon design and overall look of the game is definitely Turrican. I have to say the control is better than Turrican.
I can tell this game is going to be a challenge but will be a great play. I'm already getting good my ass kicked by some enemies that sort of blend in with the background.
