Title: Any Master System games that either don't suck or don't have cheap difficulty?
Post by: lukester on July 12, 2015, 10:34:33 AM
It's hard to know whats good from the lists full of Game Gear ports.
I like Wonder Boy III, Shinobi and Alex Kidd lost stars. That's about it.

Micky Mouse Land of Illusion and Sonic the hedgehog were two games I enjoyed a lot back then on the Game Gear, and I think their Master System counterparts should be even slightly better due to the larger TV screen. Sonic 2 paled in my impression due to very frustrating collision detection on the first boss, but with the level select cheat you can easily try later levels like the scrambled egg zone (I didn't make that up, seriously) and try flying the hang glider.
I couldn't really get into Castle of Illusion and Lucky dime caper, although I think I should give them another try now that 20 years have passed since then.

Didn't like Kenseiden at all. Rastan too hard for me. I made it to the final boss once but that was it.
Couldn't get into Golvellius. I gave it an honest shot. Maybe it's just the passwords.
Is Kung Fu Kid okay? I liked Dragon Wang on the SG-1000, and I heard it's the sequel. I'm a fan of the SG-1000, tbh.
I suppose I'll try Castle of Illusion. Power Strike looks good too.

I haven't played any Master System games for around 25 years but I recall liking Scramble Spirits and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.

Shooting Gallery and Rescue Mission are solid if you have the proper setup for light guns.
It may be the nostalgia speaking but Space Harrier and Outrun are solid fun ports on the SMS. It's just one of those things where you can easily play the arcade versions at home these days.

"Cheap difficulty"...that was how games was bitd.
I love Golden Axe(the beat'em up) on SMS. Rampage is fun and pretty easy, but it is an arcade port...it never ends. Enduro Racer is pretty easy, sort of like Hang-On but still enjoyable to play. R-type is an all time fav, but it offers a challenge...not for some 12 year old that grew up on Angry birds and tutorials

Find a way to play GG Aleste II, somebody modified it to work for the SMS & it's one of the best shooters on the system.

Please don't act like I'm some modern gamer. I've beat dozens of old games. Over 30 hucards on pce for example.
I've beat both side arms and aero blasters on pce for Petes sake. But some games are harder for me than others. I suck at sonic for example.
There are plenty of old games with cheap deaths or shitty design.
I love R-Type, but I have never managed to get past stage 4.

I love Cyborg Hunter, if you haven't tried it you really should.
I am not sure if you're being sarcastic, because it really is addicting and fun. I really enjoy Dick Tracy on the SMS
No...im serious, its one of my all time favorite games. Both sms and genny versions. I have only beat sms version though.

Back during elementary school, I had a classmate/friend that had a Master System, so when possible I'd try to come over to get to play TransBot.
Beyond that, I probably played Space Harrier and one of the Wonder Boys, don't remember too much from that system. But definitely I dug that shooter TransBot.
