So I've been following NASA's New Horizon's mission for years due to the innovative technology related to the probe, but I really started getting excited about it earlier this year when the first photos (a whopping 4x4 pixel image! lol) started coming in.

Over the last couple of months, the images started to show more detail.

And only a few days ago, shit started getting real.

Tomorrow, New Horizons makes its closest approach on this flyby. After a 10 year 3 billion mile journey, high res photos will be captured from just under 8000 miles above the surface. To give an idea of what to expect, this image shows how New Horizons would see earth from that distance:

It is considered a planet, a "Dwarf Planet".
For reference fairly informative, I knew about Eris but not Makemake.

This week, the world has looked on with awe as the New Horizons probe sent back the first ever detailed pictures of Pluto. Those images weren’t taken using the latest technology, though; New Horizons launched in January 2006, and was obviously designed and built even earlier.
So the gear inside is a little more primitive than what you’d put in a probe today. Case in point: the CPU powering the mission is a 32-bit MIPS R3000 processor. The same one used in the Sony PlayStation (via The Verge).
Not the PS2. The original PlayStation. Basic and low-fi by even 2005 standards, sure, but hey, it worked! And is still working, nearly a decade on, despite the best efforts of (quite literally) time and space.
