It'll either make him or break him.
-
I don't think it will do either do you realize how much money that guy has?
-
Gonna take the kids to see it.
I don't think his career will be affected by the movie.
-

Yeah you are probably right.. Could be worse, could be Pauly Shore or Carrot Top.
-
If Jack and Jill didn't break Sandler, nothing will. Shit, people were saying that about Little Nicky, too. An unstoppable shit machine ever since, but he's rolling in the dough.
-
The part in Little Nicky where he played the Chicago album backwards is freaking classic, at least to me.
-
He signed a deal with Netflix to do four movies for them, which sounds like a bit of a pay cut from doing normal movies.
-
I hope it winds up on the higher quality level of Adam Sandler movies (I know, I know, but they're not ALL that bad!)... I think I'll head out to the theaters for this also. I went for the new Terminator movie (I ignored the bad reviews at they came in) though I was pretty disappointed (still happy to have supported the franchise I guess). I think the last time I went out to a theater before that was for Avatar, not sure, but anyway, I hope I'll have better luck with this one if I do go.
-
From what I have seen most Netflix made shows/movies seem to be better than a lot of the stuff in theaters or main stream tv. imo

True, but I was talking money. Even if his last movie 'only' made $50m in theaters, that's $50m that they'll never get. I can't see them getting $50m worth of new subscribers that sign up just for his movies, though I'm sure they'll be popular to existing subscribers.

I haven't enjoyed an Adam Sandler movie since Happy Gilmore, although that's not really why Pixels doesn't appeal to me. I mean, c'mon, they're trying to take a concept from a Futurama segment, that even some of the funniest writers in television felt only worked in the context of a 10-minute short, and extend it into a full length feature? Really?!
If you don't have a good frame story and interesting characters built around the gimmick, like Scott Pilgrim did for example, it's just not going to work well over an hour and a half to two hour run time. There's no guarantee that they haven't written genuinely interestIng characters, but... well, I'm not enthusiastic about its chances.
I'll probably catch it on Netflix someday just to confirm whether my suspicions were true or not. The involvement of Chris Columbus and Peter Dinklage make it hard to completely turn a blind eye.

Have you seen his movies in the past 10-12 years. If a bad movie would break him it would have happened a long, long time ago.

No, I think the last one I tried to watch was that You don't mess with the Zohan. Or was it Grownups? Either way, didn't like them none.
-
Sorta only vaguely related, but because of a promotion for that movie they brought Steve Weibe out to a big tourist mall to play Donkey Kong. It was pretty cool to see him play live. They also had some cabs set up with DK and some other retro games for people to play.

Heh-heh. I'm thinking of Jack and Jill for this... ;) I really like That's My Boy and that was cool of him I guess to throw Vanilla Ice in there for jokes who normally doesn't belong in a movie, but it worked for what it was.

Bump.
"Wait. Wait. Wait. Pixels Is Actually Good ??"
"Who saw this coming ?"
http://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/Pixels-66637.html
With comedy, action, and nostalgia to spare, Pixels is one of those fun summer movies you've missed since you were a kid.
Unfortunately, Rotten Tomatoes isn't enthused.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pixels/
Much like the worst arcade games from the era that inspired it, Pixels has little replay value and is hardly worth a quarter.

I'll watch if it lands on Netflix.....but I won't spend money on it. I never was and Adam Sandler fan anyway.

Oh snap!!! :( Shit, I had to stop watching after his "SPOILER: F--K YOU!"

LOL!
I'm definitely not watching it now. Beat me to it.
Edit: Well maybe for the baby Q-berts, something ain't right about that.

I watched the review. The problem is that Pixels is just part of a larger trend of exploiting source material simply to cash-in.
This has been happening forever (often in book --> film adaptations): why can't people who actually CARE about the source material be involved in the the creation of new stuff (any media, from novels to songs to films to games)...
I thought that Wreck-It Ralph did a decent job as a film...especially since it was for kids, really. I'll take more movies like that.

I'm really, really torn. The reviews are tearing this movie to shreds. But dammit, I still can't help wanting to see it! It could have Caitlin Jenner, Britney Spears and Carrottop but I'd still want to see it simply to see Pac-Man and Centipede on the big screen. I also have a 10-year-old stepson that I've gotten into retro gaming and I think it would be fun to see with him. (My wife, on the other hand, is not thrilled at the idea).
There's a big Classic Gaming Fest here in Austin this weekend. We're going to that and maaaaybe go see Pixels afterwards. Save our money and say f*ck it and make a retro game weekend of it. What do??

Go rent/buy/stream the Last Star Fighter and be done with it. :) Or The Wizard. I'm kind of torn myself as I can see my $25 be spent elsewhere then to see a crappy movie with classic gaming icons.

sky blue, water wet, adam sandler movie bad.
-
We were thinking of going to see pixels. I think I'd rather see ant-man instead.
-
I wanna give it a shot. FYI, for what it's worth, the director isn't some rookie they pulled off the street, he's got Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire on his resume!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Columbus_(filmmaker)
Adventures in Babysitting
Home Alone 1-2
Mrs. Doubtfire
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Stepmom
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

I didn't get to say this earlier, but what an absolutely bitter f--king a$$hole for his "HAH, SPOILER IN YOUR FACE, f--K YOU!!!" Fair warning half way into it, he's so f--king bitter he flips the audience the bird basically by giving a pretty revealing plot element away...
a$$hole!!!

We just got back from the Classic Game Fest and then seeing Pixels in 3D. I'm happy to report that I loved the movie! Not all-caps-with-spaces-in-between L O V E D it, but I thought it was damn good and we had a great time.
I think movie reviewers are a jaded lot and I don't blame them for trashing Pixels' thin story. It's pretty ridiculous. But if you have ANY love for early arcade/pre-NES era video games, you're going to find something to like in Pixels. The effects look really nice. It was a blast seeing all the game cameos, not to mention plenty of other 80's references which I won't spoil here.
Forget the reviews and watch it when you get the chance.
-
I've seen every Adam Sandler movie, all the way back to Going Overboard (it reminded me of Astralius, which is probably not a good thing).
I like to support Adam Sandler because the man is a credit to the human race. So maybe I'll swing by the theatre tomorrow...

Yep, I agree! Add in some Adam Sandler fatigue in there as well.
I saw it Monday and am pleased to say that it was what you'd expect, a fun popcorn movie, and fun for the whole family so take your kids to see it too! Thumbs up!
I began to notice the grudges with some of these critics so that's why you can't always trust them...
http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/07/pixels-adam-sandler-sexism
Like this review above from an Anita Sarkeesian-style feminist. She's bitter the females didn't get more dialogue and other shit... So she sat there in the movie as a bean-counter, counting how many lines the females said versus males... Girl-crazy male nerds should never be portrayed onscreen is another vibe I'm getting from her and "retro-grade sexism" is her buzzword for it all. But yeah, they got grudges and if a movie doesn't do x or y for advancing political causes it goes on their enemies' list... It's just supposed to be a fun, nerdy movie and it accomplishes that!
And here's another. Now it's misogyny...
http://www.salon.com/2015/07/29/adam_sandler_is_done_why_pixels_may_be_his_last_gasp_of_crude_misogyny_partner/
Adam Sandler is finished: Why “Pixels” may be his last gasp of crude misogyny
The comedian's latest follows *another* abusive schlub with a hot, compliant wife. America has finally seen enough"
They're copying each other as well, like the talking points went out... They're pointing to the Lady Lisa character from the videogame that's brought to life not ever speaking and the president's wife which was only briefly seen, but she wasn't in any way central to the plot... Michelle Monaghan was a lead character and got plenty of lines, so it's like WTF is wrong with these people ?? There has to be an equal number of female characters to males with about the same amount of lines ??? Who judges a movie like that ??
-
I used to really like AS as a comedian and "actor", but his latest stuff has been meh at best.
However I have heard mixed reviews about Pixels, I may see it when i get a chance.
-
But I defiantly don't think it is gona break him, he has stuff still coming pout I am pretty sure.
-
I finally managed to watch this. Had some funny moments, but *spoiler* the whole marrying Q-bert and having Q-bert kids is just wrong. Not bad, but not good either. C+ at best.
-
[SPOILER]Yeah, the "upgrade" of Q-bert to Lady Lisa apparently didn't go exactly to the nerd's fantasy, but I guess he didn't mind the sex with some alien female creation. ;) Just a "minor" bug in the "upgrade" process, it happens...
-
Friends invited me to the cinema in July, to watch Pixels.
The film had its funny moments and some charme. Most of the time however I felt embarrassed for the main characters. Also the sheer number of love stories went overboard to my taste. Most people where I live don't get the Arcade references anyway, since public coin-operated video game halls had been banned for minors since 1985.
My opinion: High budget trash movie that might be worth renting when you have your friends and lots of beer around. Just don't expect it to be on par with the excellent Scott Pilgrim movie.

I shudder at the thought of a sequel because of that...

I watched this last night, it wasn't quite as bad as some critics made it out to be (its Adam Sandler and Kevin James for godsake, do you expect it to be Inception level standards?). They had a good concept but there were many errors in the execution including plenty of plot holes, nonsensical story lines, and some bad jokes (the whole Q*bert thing was awful and unnecessary). I went in thinking the worst but it wasn't terrible, on the same level as the Grown Ups movies in my opinion

So, better than NES Quest?

Watched this last week with the wife. Meh. Not bad, but not that good either. Maybe 5/10? It's worth watching once, but that's about it.
-
Saw the movie recently and thought it was fairly decent. It seem that all the movies about retro gaming is in relation to Nintendo, I hope someone someday will make one that will include all the retro system from the late 80's and early 90's.
