So if you recall I started a thread on what MD games I should try, Well my MDED arrived yesterday, And I thought I 'd share my thoughts on the games as I went.
Did I miss something? Should I give something another shot? Do you have fond memories of the game? Do I like terrible games? all comments welcome.
without further ado my next post shall be on the first game I fired up...

GAME #1:

Streets of rage 2
Well I'd love to come up with a way of descrirbing this game. It's not that it's bad, IT's that it is actually really good. And that just doesn't do it justice, rather I think the best compliment for this game is FUN. if you win it's fun, if you lose it's fun, and so so satisfying. The Music sounds great, the picture is bright and detailed. The controls are almost perfect. At times some of the enimies feel a tad to powerful, but this added the right amount of skill and challenge to the game. If I had to come up with a compliant for this game, It just felt too short becuase I wanted to keep playing after my playthrough. (and I did replay it a bit)
Overall, the pefect game to show off what the genny was great at. ON to more gamess though.

GAME 2:

NHL 94'
OKay Okay, I cou;dn't help but go to a game I use to love. As a kid I loved NHL 94 and 95. This game is as good as I remember it. There are a few things I wish were diffrent, but overall this and 95 and the SNES are more favorite 2 versions. 94 on the genny has the best ice skating mechanics, no turning on a dime here, for the era. And one timers/checking still feel awesome. I do miss the fights and eason mode 95 added, but that's okay, as it soon devolved to over complication of the game series. I also find this version quite challenging and actually fun. The goalie mechanics seem to stop things from being 12-2 games when playing against the AI. I find this highly possible in many of later games, even on the hardest AI settings.
Overall a good game, I think I might still perfer 95 on the SNES but that could be 8 yr old me having the SNES and not the genny, perhaps if I had the genny I'd have felt diffrently.
Well that's it for now. Night one of MD was certaintly fun, and featured two fun, light games.

I still enjoy Streets of Rage 1, too. Don't listen to the naysayers. :)

Play Boogerman. Just for the quality of the animation alone, it's worth it. I know the "Humor" is a little sophomoric, but it's a well designed and fun game. Also, NHL All Star Hockey '95 is just an amazing Hockey game. One of the best I have ever played, even by today's standards! LOL
The Streets of Rage Games are amazing, by the way.

Go for Thunder Force III next. Or IV if you haven't gone into a fetal position yet today.

WARSONG aka Langrisser
Well I wanted to start playing some games I had played on the PCE. One I always liked but had a tough time enjoying due to language barriers was langrisser. Warsong turned out to be a treat of a game, but honestly it just made me enjoy the PCE version more. I actually most confess this post is a shame. after I learned the stages and menus I finished the game on PCE and watched/read the story in English online. (Which is fine as the story is nothing new, and unremarkable really. Bad guys attack the king, Prince goes off and gets army, rescues the kingdom, blah blah.) The PCE version is just beautiful compared the Feka. Although both games have excellent graphics and music.
The game itself while fun, a mix of Fire Emblem and Military Madness, Isn't very deep and kind of lacking in the difficulty balancing. While generally the enemy is stronger, they are very dumb. And you must farm XP or the end is impossible. and if you do farm well, then you end up with and easy second half. Class choices add some replayability and a somewhat varying story line does too.
overall I'm going to give it an 8 out of 10. Solid, fun, but not good enough to be a 10/10 WOW game. A must try for those who like strategy games.

My butt is ready and waiting.

I'm a big fan of the Genesis. The library has many quality action games, adventure titles, and platformers.
I think Streets of Rage 3, despite not having as good as music as 1 or 2 (the music is still good imo), is the best of the games. The dedicated dashing move helps a lot in keeping things moving at a quick pace.

Pocahontas
A game I had heard nothing about. But hey it's Disney on the Genesis it must be good right? Well as it turns out . . . It is in a fact a really decent game. A nice surprise. A platformer/puzzle game in the vein of prince of Persia. You switch between the two playable characters of Pocahontas herself as well as Meeko, her racoon friend. You switch between the two to solve puzzles to make it through each levels. Falling, getting caught, or shot, will end the game, but allow you to restart from the last check point. pure perseverance will have you make it through the game. It starts out very easy, but quickly ramps up to test your platforming and puzzle solving. The game consists of 4 large stages and controls pretty good only a few actions feel clumsy in the game. and will probably take about 3-5 hours to complete. A light game for in-between serious games.
Although kiddy looking it does have enough meat of game play to be good enough for anyone. The Visuals and nature are amazing. Perhaps one of the most beautiful games on the system. However some backgrounds can be plain in spots. 4/5 on graphics. and the music is beautiful renditions from the movie, they loop on each stage and can get old after a while, especially in areas where you die often. 4/5 on music. (seriously listen to the tunes from this game if nothing else) Overall a solid title. I'd give it an 8/10.
Also for anyone interesting - there is a hidden extra ending which is worth unlocking. adding a bit of replay.

Gunstar Heroes
by popular demand
So here it goes:
A super action filled run and gun. Contra to the next level. Challenging yet so satisfy and fun, you keep coming back for more. I am honestly just amazed at this game.
Graphics - These are freaking stunning, just wish I was playing through RBG. But even S video was pretty stellar. Bright, Large Sprits, scolling everwhere. Everything about this game looks awesome 5/5. I could go on but there is enough out there already.
Gameplay - There is kinda a learning curve here, but it isn't terrible. SOme stages seem kinda short while others just don't want to end. Overall I think it's balanced pretty well, unfourtantly I can't make the final push to beat it, I get tired 4.5/5
Music - The Tunes fit the game perfectly, catchy and clear, upbeat to match all the action. 5/5
Overall, other then a few spots and some learning curve, the game is great, and I can't see anyone who loves games not to enjoy this right out of the gate. Of the 5 games I've reviewed thus far, and probably the 15 I've really played. IT IS BY FAR the best so far, and I think that says a lot for it. although Im saving the shooters and RPG's for later, as I feel there are quite a few good titles there that might give GSH a run for it's money.
Overall 10/10 - since it's the gold standard and all.

Taz in the Escape from mars
Why you may be asking? Well It's simple this is the 1 of only 2 (genny) games I played as a young kid. My friend Jimmy had a copy of this game and a genesis. He'd get an N-64 soon enough and this would be forgotten. We could never beat it. HAHA well now I have and regret it.
Anyway let's just get to the meat of it. This game is mediocre. Not as absolutely terrible as it's panned for sure but it has several huge problems
1) THe sounds are just terible
2) The Controls feel clunky compared to it's platforming counter parts. not bad but not great either
3) The MUSIC is worse than an SNES under water.
4) The Platforming layout is terrible. The spin is hard to control, You have to jump off screen all the time, generally into danger. Taz also just eats anything you touch, most of which is harmful and placed in areas where the controls do not let you avoid it. Also many times you can go through walls or floors, but it's not intuitive as to which you can. When the platforming is on screen and not filled with traps, it's actually pretty good, so this is more of a case of lazy programming then limitations, which is the worse offense of the game.
However there area few really nice things about the game.
1) the graphics are decent, the game looks good - although the backgrounds leave much to be desired.
2) there are a wide variety of interesting places to visit and to see, as well as plenty of WB characters to meet. plenty of cartoon references around as well.
3) several points of the game are fun and satisfying, I just wish it was more than a short burst here and there.
So there you have it a poorly programed game that had the potential to be so much better. If you've never heard of it or played it, don't go out of your way, but it might be worth a little fun if you like this sort of game.
Overall 4/10.

Gunstar Heroes: While certainly awesome, I wish you could skip the "transitions" ...you know, when a boss or an opponent is shifting from one attack to the next "mode" of attack and you have to wait and watch the shift. A small break, to catch your breath and build drama is great game design, but I feel that GH suffers by making these "rest points" last far too long...especially on replay!
Don't get me wrong, the first time you encounter a new area/opponent, these "rest periods" are AWESOME as you watch the spectacle unfold!!!
But these very same "transitions" become tedious, quickly after replaying a segment.
Despite this annoyance, GH is still brilliant.
TAZ: I never played it. Ha! I don't want to. :)

Pocahontas is a fun one! I got my copy from the Desh-meister and really enjoyed playing it too. I wish there was more Racoon though.
