Any titles worth getting that are not on Nes, or are drastically better then the Nes counterparts? I'm new to the Famicom scene, so figured I'd ask.
-
Castlevania 3
Sweet Home
Contra
Any Famicom disk games if you can stand the loading time. :)
I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any at work lol
-
Wont be buying a FDS. The stuff simply isn't going to last much longer, so I am sticking to cart based games.
-
Some fun games I've been really into for famicom:
Yume Penguin Monogatari -hilarious konami platformer/shooter
Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti -mini splatterhouse
Over Horizon -very awesome horizontal shoot em up with customizable options system
castlevania III with amazing OST for the famicom
Crisis Force -possibly the best shooter on the system
Samurai Pizza Cats -fun but easy platformer with awesome sprites
-
Binary Land - Fun cheap single screen arcade game where you have to bring two penguins together
The Goonies - The original rather than Goonies II, an excellent quick playthrough
Kid Dracula/Akumajo Kun - A fun platformer
Nuts & Milk - Not an adult game, another fun single screen arcade game
-
I'll second Crisis Force. And of course there's Summer Carnival '92: Recca, but that's spendy.
-
I'm going to name all the weird shit that nobody else will name basically.
I am partial to Sukeban Deka III.
It's kind of retarded and has some "why did they do that" issues, but if you're a fan of the show/movie/manga, it's fun. You are highschool girls running around killing shit with yoyos/steel origami cranes/stitching needles...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agluh-z9fqI
^^^^ I think it's fun. You have to use Yui (Yoyo chick) to get stuff from the phone booths. If you don't do that, you're basically just going to wander around obliterating people in Tokyo until you get bored.
there's also Fist of the North Star for even more hilarity. You punch things until their heads explode, etc. It's a fantastic time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gt8ntbujhA
Other stuff:
Holy Diver (Castlevania ripoff)
Magic Crystal (Excellent platformer. The animations are tits)
Goonies (much better than Goonies 2. One of my favorite games on Famicom.)
Musashi No Ken (Slap happy Samurai sword platforming with Kendo matches and stuff.)
The Ninja Kun games are fun also.
Some of these are earlier/weird, but they are worth playing to me. They're mostly weird arcade-y style games that aren't the top notch Konami looking games... but are pretty fun.
Devil World (CluClu Land + Pacman? I am not sure how to describe it)
and THIS MOTHERf*ckER RIGHT HERE:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm1u_FZdNKg
I really like this game.
There are alot of really weird ass titles to find. You can get some Sentai stuff like Choujin Sentai Jetman also.
-
Hebereke (Ufouria) is awesome. Some of Sunsoft ' s finest.
-
Madara is actually a killer RPG on fami.
plus, if you are so inclined, the process to make a repro is open the cart, remove the roms, and straight solder in the new ones with the translation.
plus, that sweet sweet expansion audio.
-
I'll add:
Bio Senshi Dan (more fun if you understand Japanese, but a cool adventure-platformer)
Cocoron
Getsufuu Maden
Gimmick! (Though a PAL-only version exists)
Hello Kitty World (in all reality "Balloon Fight 2")
Konami Wai Wai World 1 & 2
Ninja Jajamaru: Ginga Daisakusen
Salamander
Tetrastar
As you can see, there are lots of decent-to-great platformers that never came out in the US.
-
If you're into chooties, try Uchuu Keibitai SDF. Tetrastar is also great, but someone else suggested it.
You might enjoy Astro Fang if you liked Rad Racer, though it's not perfect.
And hey, there's also Galaxian and Dig Dug, which didn't get a US release.
-
I'm glad you mentioned Dig Dug. I didn't realize we only got the second one over here on Nes.
-
Getsu Fuma Den
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtfzLR-KEpU
It's some thing how konami released allot more for the famicom then the nes.
-
This thread is a beauty, just to add Lupin III: Pandora no Isan.

Ive actually been interested in checking out the Sukeban Deka games after watching the movies, now I'm definitely going to. Probably the most 80s Japanese thing ever.
If you have anyone to play with Sanrio Volley Ball can be incredibly fun with friends after some drinks.
Another awesome game is the Japanese home brew shoot em up Blade Buster. Its a 2 and 5 minute caravan mode game that is on par with the PCE Soldier games. It's incredible seeing it run on a Famicom. The boss takes up the whole screen and everything runs so fast and smooth with minimal flicker. If you make your own cart you can use a battery game to save scores as well.

Good luck finding Metal Storm, I've been after the FC version forever now & it's even more expensive than the U.S. One.
I forgot to mention, I know you asked specifically for games that weren't released in the US, but there are some titles that are cheaper on the FC. For instance...
FC Genjin - $30 (NES Bonk: $300)
Final Mission - $40 (NES SCAT: $80)
-
Yeah, Sukeban Deka is worth playing for a bit.
It's a wierd actiony-RPG thing.
I like those earlier Famicom games that are kind of retarded looking but playable.
-
Sky Destroyer is a fun shooter where you are fighter in the JAPANESE IMPERIAL AIRFORCE.
-
Try Kickle Cubicle the famicom name is Meikyūjima - "Labyrinth Island"
It's a fun little IREM puzzle arcade port Punkic turned me onto a while a back. I really enjoy this game, and play it whenever I have the NES turned on.
-
This thread is a beauty, just to add Lupin III: Pandora no Isan.
There's a translation patch for it too.
-
I might as well, suggest the famicom version of little samson and panic restaurant to.Mostly because in price there cheaper then there nes counter parts. When i was looking to for little lickle and gourmet world i know it didn't cost me to much.
-
Taking a cue from this thread I nabbed Akumajou Densetsu. The same seller had Ikari 1, and Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 at a nice price so I grabbed those also. I already have Super Star Force here along with Ikari 2 and Spartan X, so that gives me some stuff to start off with. So many titles meantioned on this thread, I am going to have to work my way through the list lol. :)
-
I got all excited after misreading the thread title as Falcom Recommendations. I'm retarded.
-
Also to add: Higemaru makaijima from Capcom. Really cool game.
I'm not sure if there is a NES version of it, it seems that there is but I can't find it anywhere.

There was an unreleased prototype of an English version of Makaijima. Check it out here: http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=1345

...Samurai Pizza Cats -fun but easy platformer with awesome sprites
It was crime not having that one in America. Was one of the first ones I played after discovering emulation in the late 90s.
-
Also, esper bouken tai. This game is great and absolutely crazy (mainly because of the enemies) like its arcade brother psychic 5. I used to play phychic 5 when i was little (end of 80s) a lot, it was a very smart and strategic platformer game. Forgot about it through the years and then a few years ago BAM, i remembered playing it but i could not remember its name. I searched everywhere in the web for it by typing a few things about it that I could still remember but nothing... I couldn't find it. A year later I saw esper bouken tai in a video in youtube while i was checking out famicom games and I realised that it looked a lot like that arcade game that i couldn't find its name! Finally through wiki i managed to find the name of its arcade brother psychic 5...
To conclude, both are great games. Esper bouken tai for the famicom is a strategic platformer with adventure elements that are missing from psychic 5. I remember that the latter has a timer and when the time runs out a huge red devilish foot suddenly appears on the screen and stamps on the character. Nostalgic :)

Ok, picked up a good few games to get me started. Some stuff I got is on Nes, but I wanted the FC versions due to extra content, or in the case of Rockman 4, because it's cheaper on FC. Going to list what I have gotten so far, and on the list add in what differences I know of on the Fc version.
So far got the following:
Goonies: Not aware of any differences really compared to arcade VS. version.
Rockman 4: Other then title screen?
Akumajo Densetsu: Music, enemy sprites, placement of some blocks, etc.
Karnov: Story scenes have been included.
TMNT (Ninja Turtles 2 Arcade game on Nes): Sprites have been fixed for Foot ninjas, Michelangelo, and Bebop, and soem background objects are different.
Ninja Ryukenden: ???
Ninja Ryukenden II: Has a ending easter egg, and Jaquio's sprite is slightly different.
Double Dragon III: Easier, and you start off with more energy. There is more ending content also.
Super Star Force:???
Spartan X: ???
Ikari 1: Title screen???
Ikari 2: Title screen and continue code???
Contra: Story scenes and ending, and visual effects added.

Kid dracula and the splatter house port. Forget the name of it.
-

Kickle cubicle was my most rented nesss game. Such fun.

As far as I know it's the same as the Arcade vs. version. But since a home NES release never legitimately came out, it's worth owning as a Famicom title.
Akumajo Densetsu: Music, enemy sprites, placement of some blocks, etc.
Difficulty balance is different. Grant is far more powerful in this version than Castlevania 3.
