Title: TV Series most people hate but you like.
Post by: viper0hr on August 03, 2015, 10:11:54 PM
So I have been rewatching alot of Star Trek lately, and just started watching Enterprise again.

I watched star Trek with my dad growing up alot, and I can remember watching Enterprise when it was released with him and enjoying it at the time, and in years since it is seen as the "bastard son" of Star Trek in the way the prequels are to Star Wars.

This got me thinking, what are some series you love even though most people do not, and why?

Rewatching Enterprise the way they did the tech (It being the past, done after the other series in real life) actually worked well in comparison, the story is actually well done for the most part for Star Trek standards (I feel like they went into Time Travel too early and that made alot of people not like it, Episode 1, REALLY? lol), and overall the acting is pretty good for TV of the time.

Nostalgia may have some factor to it, but even with all the stuff I notice that is off/not right, the series overall hold up, to me.

(Oh, and before it's posted, WE KNOW, Blakes 7 yada yada yada :p)

I'm a big voyager fan but people seem to hate on it a lot. Janeway is smoking and the ship design is beautiful. Too much holodeck tho.

Yeah same here, for me we watched together the reruns in the eighties of the first original Star Trek.

I've always thought Next Generation was by far the best. I love all the great characters like Data, Worf, Jean-Luc, Geordi, Wesley etc..

Three's Company.  Hey I was poor growing up.  We didn't have cable so sitcoms were a big thing in my home.

Yeah NG is my favorite series of ST by far. I just re watched the whole thing last month.

I would agree, Voyager was great, but way too much holodeck.

I wasn't a huge Enterprise fan, but I watched it all the way through, which is more than I can say for DS9 and Voyager.

We need a thread like this for movies. Unpopular movies actually exist, unpopular TV generally gets cancelled real quick. Even a "flop" like Enterprise must have made some money or they would have killed it much sooner. Now OC and Stiggs...I've only ever met one other person who didn't hate that movie. Even the director has abandoned it.

There was a show (I think back in 2000 or 2001, I don't remember) called She Spies.
It was sort of a low-rent modern day version of Charlie's Angels.

I quite liked it, but it never really seemed popular with the masses.

Full House wasn't bad at all.
In fact, most of the ABC "TGIF" Friday night family comedies were quite enjoyable.
Life seemed so much simpler back then, at least if those shows are anything to go by.

I can't think of any shows that people hate altogether, but I like a few long running shows that many think should've been put out to pasture already, stuff like Family Guy, The Simpsons, Dr. Who, and Red Dwarf (two new seasons to start filming later this year!).  I'll agree that earlier episodes generally were better than the later stuff (less so for Dr. Who), but I don't let that stop me from enjoying the newer ones; no matter what, the worst episode of any of those four shows is still 10x better than 95% of the rest of the bullshit being made today.

The nearest shows I can think of that people might hate but I like are Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and Jack of All Trades, but does anyone really hate them?  Methinks it's more that they've never heard of 'em or if they have they simply don't care.

So Bruce Campbell is the common denominator?

Bruce makes everything better!

Brisco would probably be just as entertaining with some other competent actor, but Jack wouldn't be the same without Bruce's superb stooge-ness.

Full House sucked. All those other shows sucked. What was "simpler" back then was the audience. "Life" was about the same.

Dr. Who is more popular than ever here in it's homeland, more so with kids these days.

Red Dwarf was one of greatest series of all time!!! but I found the new episodes were such a dissapointment. I really, really tried to like them, but I thought they were just terrible.

Same here, but there's a few fans of the past doctors that just hate it.  I don't know why.  Too high budget?  Too much humor?

Sounds like you know more about Dr. Who than me, I've never watched it much.
But from what I have watched of the old and new I can see why past fans are not keen on the new stuff. It seems since when they relaunched the series around 2005? they decided they were aiming it as more of a children's TV program. The old series felt more targeted to adults.

Looks like I haven't tried enough actually then. I watched "Back to Earth" and was so disappointed that when "Red Dwarf X" came along I didn't even bother checking it out. I'll give it a watch now though.

In 1992 when I was 15 I was in the studio audience for the filming of Quarantine, was absolutely friggin hilarious, I was crying with laughter.

Doctor Who is easily one of the top five most popular shows of all time. In 2015 it might be the most popular  scripted show in the world. The only time it was an underdog was during the mid/late 80s when it's own producers were trying to shitcan the series. Quality was so low at that point I could make a case for canceling it myself...other than that, it's actually the show everyone likes including you. Only total dicks hate Dr Who. It's like hating Sesame Street or fireworks or ice cream.

Red Dwarf though...I'll watch every episode, but it really took a turn downward ages ago, when the lighting got darker and the cameras closer. Like...season 3. Right around that time. Interestingly, MST3K did the same thing at about the same time. It must have something to do with rising budgets...

Some shows I can't defend, but I liked them back in the day and they were canceled early.

Probe
Automan
Mr Merlin
Max Headroom (OK, this one is genuinely great)
Big O
Doctor Doctor

Well that might be true I guess.
But it's nice to watch a show where families interacted with one another and got into all kinds of plights and hijinks without constantly burying their noses in a cell phone or whatever.

I thought Quantum Leap had quite the fan base.

Anyway, I love:
Golden Girls
Murder She Wrote
Matlock
Columbo
Etc.

But I'm not sure these shows are hated.

I loved BARNEY MILLER.
I watched it as a kid and felt like it was a special view into what the "adult world" was like.

I'm a huge fan of scott bakula from quantum leap. He's a big reason I liked enterprise. Like Zeta said, I could not sit through ds9 or voyager and enterprise may not have been perfect, but it was decent.

My wife is watching Enterprise again, it's a great show, loved the time travel stuff, never understood why people got turned off by it.  Love Voyager as well, not a big Janeway fan though.  She's ok, the Holodeck Dr. is probably my favorite character.  Never saw DS9, always seemed like a boring idea, but someday I'll push myself thru it.  I think it has Worf, so that helps.

Cheers for Brisco County Jr.(have the DVD set, but haven't watched the show in decades) & Jack of All Trades.  Heck, he's one of the main reasons I used to watch Hercules & Xena.  Always looked for episodes with him in it.  Got into Burn Notice since he was in it.

Doctor Who, love Doctor's 9 & up.  10/Tennet is my favorite, hated to see him go, but did get into 11.  12 however, I just haven't gotten into yet.  Granted, I've only seen a few ep's of him at a friends house, since Netflix & Hulu have yet to put up the last season.  The original series however, I have yet to get into....at all.  I've tried, really really tried.  Doesn't help with there being missing episodes.  I watched thru all of Doctor 1(of what's not missing), was bored to tears.   I remember watching bit's n' pieces of Tom Baker/Doctor 4 as a kid.  My wife tried to watch his arc since he seems to be the most popular of all the Doctor's, but wasn't feeling it.  Have yet to see the movie with Doctor 8, not even sure if it's available.  I'll eventually try more of the old Doctor's, but it'll be awhile with my limited time.

As for shows people seem to hate.  I liked Avenger's Assemble(though I prefer Earth's Mightiest Heroes).  Love love love Batman: The Brave & the Bold!  Most people took it too seriously, so it got a short 3rd season.  The  Batman series(Beware the Batman) that was supposed to replace it & be darker was ok, but it got canned.  Loved the Green Lantern Animated series, but that got canned!  Loved the new He-man but that got canned!  Like the new Thundercats....guess what, it got canned!  Loved Spectacular Spier-man, but that got canned!  The Tick live action show was good, but got canned after 9 episodes.  Still, I prefer the cartoon. Really enjoyed Transformers Animated despite some episodes focusing way too much on humans.  It's like the Brave & the Bold of Transformers, people took it too seriously & it got canned.

Captain Planet -  I mean cmon, who wouldn't want him as "our hero"  And who else is going to turn pollution down to zero!

Exo Squad - I guess it was an American attempt at a Gundam-ish cartoon.  I enjoyed it but I've never heard anyone else ever even mention it

As far as the Star Trek discussion...  I enjoyed NG the best, followed by Voyager, then probably DS9 and Original series.  Haven't honestly watched Enterprise so I cannot offer an opinion there.  Picard has got to be my favorite character in all of them.  But I agree with PD that the hologram doctor in Voyager was awesome too.

Two REALLY goofy and cheesy shows that I have always had a lot of pleasure watching are Silk Stalkings and Nash Bridges.

I remember watching both of those show after Monday Night Raw (speaking of cheesy and goofy ) in the late 90s. Both were pretty trashy and featured a lot of cringe worthy dialogue and bad acting, which is definitely why I enjoyed them so much

Man do I miss the days of cheesy late night USA crime and police dramas that were so damn prevalent during that period.

Yeah, and still better than most other shows on tv. And i think they do that a bit on purpose. Sort of a throw back to 80s sitcoms.

And Yes!! Joe Bob Brigg's Drive in Theater was always a blast! Although, sadly, I watched more of MonsterVision than Drive in Theater back in the day.

Happy Console Gamer. Ehhh.. he's a likable enough guy I guess. Not the biggest fan of the show though.

Game Chasers, yeah to me it's boring. It's a pickers show about old video games, I tried to watch a few episodes and they don't find enough worthwhile stuff at good prices to even make it worth making an episode about. I'm also not a big fan of glorifying game prices, etc

Yeh Happy Console Gamer talks really enthusiastically and nostalgically about the exact gaming era I'm interested in (late eighties to mid nineties). Plus from watching his videos I share very similar tastes in stuff in general, particular oldskool animes, certain sci fi films etc... jeez I really am a nerd.

Game Chasers like all the channels I like, I've watched them from when they first started on YouTube.
They're not particularly knowledgeable about games, I don't think they claim to be, but they're all likeable and I think quite amusing in a teenage humour kinda way "chodes" etc. The show is now mainly about them goofing around at conventions and a bit of bartering in retail stores, as the original format of going to flea markets they did't really find any games anymore.

I think he's a likable enough guy. But he has a tendency to talk about every topic like it's "underground" or in a hipster "not mainstream" way when he's talking about huge releases that a lot of people are familiar with. He produces way too many videos on small or little topics or news announcements. A once a week format might be a little better.

I saw the first few episodes and they didn't find good deals in the first place. I also didn't find them the least bit amusing or likable.

Two REALLY goofy and cheesy shows that I have always had a lot of pleasure watching are Silk Stalkings and Nash Bridges.

Nash Bridges was definitely a goodie.  Who doesn't like Cheech?

Yeh Happy Console Gamer talks really enthusiastically and nostalgically about the exact gaming era I'm interested in (late eighties to mid nineties). Plus from watching his videos I share very similar tastes in stuff in general, particular oldskool animes, certain sci fi films etc... jeez I really am a nerd.

I haven't picked up on the "underground" thing myself. I really like his channel so I think it's great that he's putting out more videos, it's a relatively new thing that he increased his video output.

When they were going to flea markets I think they got the balance just right of finding stuff, the way they did it seemed more real. Then when they found in the wild Surprise at Dinosaur Peak and Little Samson, I thought the whole thing was entertaining, and that's coming from someone who doesn't buy games these days and I've never bought anything NES myself. They could easily just plant rarer or expensive games and pretend to hit the jackpot in every episode. This is exactly what happened in every episode of Toy Hunter, it comes across as completely staged and a bit lame.

^^ I know a guy who found a boxed copy of Little Samson for 4$ at a fleamarket! Although he did hunt for it for a few months

Right?! He and Don Johnson had pretty good chemistry together onscreen.

And Yasmine Bleeth definitely added that late 90s cheese factor that I miss oh so dearly

The lawrence welk Show

I like those old variety shows...even when they have old-timey music (which is 99%).
