Title: I'm a new Turbografx collector. Welcome Me !
Post by: dqualls187 on August 08, 2015, 09:12:21 PM
Hello everyone. My name is David but you can call me DQ. I made a post in another thread but figured i would officially introduce myself. I'm new to collecting for Turbografx but have a nice little collection going already. I've collected for alot of other systems over the years but Turbografx always eluded me. I never knew anyone who had one growing up and didn't really start thinking about getting one till a few years ago. I finally jumped in last month and bought my first system complete in box with a few games i was wanting! I'm a big shooter fan so some of these were a must!
Spent quite a bit on the bundle of Turbo games but it's worth it to me. I've played Soldier Blade and Super Star Solider for a while on my Vita and loved em. Air Zonk was one i had always heard was amazing and always wanted to play.
So far I'm loving the system! Play it everyday after work! Me an my girl have been playing alot of Bomberman as she was always a big fan of the series. Beat Cadash a number of times now! Absolutely love Air Zonk & was finally was able to 1CC Soldier Blade with 1,892,000 points! 8)
I secured another pretty awesome bundle this past weekend. 2 separate ones actually. First was for a sealed Blazing Lazers and sealed R-Type. The other was a bundle of 4 sealed games. Bonks Adventure, Bonks Revenge, Dragon Spirit & Bravoman. Also included in that bundle was 3 new controllers. Picked up a multitap nib as well! I'll have to post another pic when i get the new bundle.
Some may think I'm crazy but i plan on opening the games and enjoying them. I just like to get games in as good as condition as possible. Anyway, I hope to meet some cool people here and maybe do some deals in the future!

Welcome aboard! :)
Why not make video when you open up any of the sealed games you haven't cracked yet?

Hey, thanks! :P
I may have to. I've never made a video like that so it would be a first. I already opened the sealed Aero Blasters i picked up.

You know what's funny is I've thought about making a YouTube channel dedicated to just that, haha. Ive opened quite a few rare sealed games over the years. :-k I don't know if I'd ever go through with it though. I'm not one to try and seek attention. I don't even have any social network accounts or anything. This is only the 2nd forum I've ever posted on.

Ok, I don't have the silly Facebook stuff, either. (OR WHATEVER THE NEW THING IS... Instagram? Snapchat? YouPornTube? Pinterest? Tweeter? Blodia? Timeball? Twitter?)
But, simply send me your sealed games and I will make videos as I unwrap them.
Sometimes, I may unwrap myself, too, but we can decide on the show's formula later (see, it should be a series!)
Seriously, though, you can make a video without showing yourself or saying anything.
In fact, if you shot the raw footage, I would gladly create a video from it.
"Sealed games want to be free" could be our tag line or mantra.
Sadly, I really want to do this, but I understand if you are scared.
DON'T BE.
Keep phone/camera steady and film.
:)
YOU HAVE A LOT OF PRESSURE TO DO THIS NOW.
Don't blame me.
TG-16 can be intense.
Welcome, comrade. :)

Normally I would not have anything nice to say about someone joining to talk about collectard stuff, but if you buy sealed games to open them, you have my support.

Cool on the Soldier Blade 1cc. If you got a pic of your high score post it up in the high score thread :)

Thanks for the welcome everybody! 8-[ Didn't know so many people would be for opening sealed games, lol, I'll try an do a video when I get the new bundle or at least take some good pics!
And I'll definately have to get in on the high score thread! Just set a new score last night on Soldier Blade! 8) + i tried the Challenge levels for the first time and snapped a pic of all 3 scores!
Can't say I've ever heard the word "Collectard" haha. Does it make me one because i have a collection and came to talk about it? ](*,)

"Collectard" isn't an entirely derogatory term. Many of us self apply the term. I.e. I have a bunch of CIB games but usually just use my everdrive, I'm such a collectard.
Since you open your sealed games and play them, RJ is pleased and the community will not flog you. :D
This video just gets better and better.

In my opinion, there are two options: you open them now and you become famous or you keep them for 150 more years and you become a millionaire. The choice is yours.

Well look no further! 8-[
I don't really understand the sealed collector. I sorta tried it for a bit i guess. I remember picking up alot of sealed collectors editions for ps3. Along with quite a few sealed Super Nintendo & 64 games. I cashed out on some eventually to fund more games I wanted to play but for the price i sold some at in auction I wish I would of just kept them and opened em up to have a really nice cib. One i regret was Super Castlevania IV. Only sold for about $220 at auction. Wish I would just kept it and opened it up. It was about 2 years ago when I wised up and got rid of all my sealed games to get more awesome games to play. There's no sense in having a game on the shelf that can't be enjoyed!

Nice sig, Mr. Qualls. :D Nice collection there, too. Some rare stuff and it all looks in great condition. More importantly, you have a nice sampling of systems that encapsulate much of the history of games, not just picks from one developer or system. Get yourself some nice shelves to display all that shizz though!

Welcome aboard and very nice shots of the ole collection! Super Star Soldier is my most played and favorite shooter of all time just going by hours/replay value. Best sound/music tracks are of stage 2 and stage 6. It's really the perfect shooter in all aspects, challenge, music, vertical level design, bosses, etc. And a true master will enter the Easter Egg code to enable the max difficulty level (which is stated in Japanese) and attempt to beat the game. :)

I do enjoy some bullet hell shooters but most of my favs are from the late 80's/early 90s as well. I mainly like bullet hell before it got too crazy like the original Dodonpachi for Saturn. Though, i love Ketsui on PS3!

I went PC Engine for both Sidearms and Devil's Crush, so I don't know if what you paid for is a good price or not, but they're definitely three great starter games to get for the system.

Well, if you are asking, that could be a problem. That says you might be just wild westing it through ebay and paying whatever.
Many members here exercise great patience in getting the games they want. Personally, I don't like contributing to the high price "sold listings" that the next guy bases his price off. At least it was an auction, I guess, and not a BIN.

I'm new to collecting for Turbografx but not new to collecting and I'm not above hitting ebay when i cant find something i'm looking for. I can't find alot of turbo games locally in the boxes like these. All the other turbo games I bought through NA not ebay except Blazing Lazers & R-Type.

He probably just didn't care too much for this (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=17082.msg420217#msg420217) reaction to overspending.
He literally paid double what Air Zonk CIB had been selling for on eBay, dropped Dynastic Hero money on Soldier Blade and more or less paid double to quardruple what Devil's Crush had sold for recently CIB, for a "Devils Crush" listing.
If he wants to close his eyes and plug his ears so that he doesn't learn the basics of how to operate the internet/common sense, then he is as lost as the rest of the collectards who brag to one another about overpaying for games and raising the price ceiling.
At least with openibg sealed games, he was taking them out of the loop. It's ironic that by making a sealed game technically less available, it actually slows the increase in price.

The whole point of big spending is to show off the photos of purchases you haven't even received yet and bask in the chorus of praise as your fellow collectards cheer you on to buy harder and faster.
He never got the validation he was looking for here, but I'm sure he's been spamming every form of social media and forums like nintendoage, where he will get the reaction he needs.

Yeah. After witnessing a few hundred melt-downs on this forum you get to the point where you can see it a mile away. I read the first couple of posts, knew it was going to flame out, waited a few days to check back...yep. Collectard.

He splurged like Jabba the Hutt on a cruise ship buffet.
Did that idiot even realize how much just the Bomberman 93 Turbochip costs? Let alone the whole CIB.
Then he bought sealed games just to open them. Considering he was gonna flip them later, I don't get why he bothered to open those boxes.

Such nice folks around here. Feels good to be back! 8)
I just want you guys to know, I don't have any hard feelings. I did leave because i was a little frustrated by the negativity, but it's whatever. Nothing to dwell on, I just wasn't wanting to hear any more about it at the time.
I also want you to know that I actually am a gamer and have a love and passion for games. I never bought any of my Turbo games with the thought of flipping them. I bought them because I wanted to play them. Maybe I spent more than some of you guys did but oh well, that's my problem. I did it because I wanted that game and it's not available any where else around me. And I bought sealed games and opened em because I wanted those games in as good of condition as I could get them in for my personal collection. To enjoy and play, not to show off and hope people think I'm cool cuz i got rare games. I don't need validation or Internet props or whatever. I only shared my games and pics because that's what I'm into and thought you guys were to. You can call me a collectard or idiot or whatever makes you feel better but I'm in this hobby for the right reasons, because I love games and have for 30 years. I havnt sold one of my Turbografx games and don't plan to. That's a system I had been interested in and wanted to get into for along time and I'm glad I did and i still play it regularly.
Anyways, just thought I should say a little somethin :) Hope you guys have been doing good. Im happy to be back and looking forward to being part of the community again.

I want to be nice, and welcome you... But I feel like before I may even finish posting this response, you may have left again already.
I suggest if you want to make it here, you just be more apart of the community. Be proactively posting, not just in the FS sections.
You will upset members with the "Look at me posts" and overall the community dislikes collectards.
I hope you make it. Its always nice to actually have meaningful members join. May your time here hopefully be longer this time.
~Ryan
Thanks! :) I came back to get some help with some mods but plan to stay and try for some more high scores and things. I havnt even checked the for sale section and im not really buying many new games and things right now as im saving to move outta my apartment and get a house but i may check it out at some point.

We talked about you because you're an a$$hole. Your presence is not needed for that conversation, so you coming back is, if anything, a damper on the discussion.
I can't expect this to mean much to someone who clearly craves attention very very badly, but there is good attention and bad attention. When your mom beat you with her hot water bottle every day and said the reason why African babies are going to hell is because you touch yourself, see, that's the "bad" kind, even though, yes, feeling anything is better than feeling nothing. To earn the "good" kind you'll have to engage the rest of society on a more meaningful level than, "LOOK AT ME!!! LOOK AT ME!!!".
It works best if you practice it in "real life". Then the forum version comes naturally. So, go away for like a decade.

Look, man. It's a generational problem. I see lots of guys like you on Reddit who really enjoy spending time spreading their collection out on the floor and taking pictures to post with titles like "My collection so far. How am I doing?" There's nothing wrong with that. But that stuff just doesn't resonate with us older guys. For us it's even a little bit cringe-worthy because that's just not how our generation rolls. That doesn't mean that we're right and you're wrong, but there are a lot of us here who are old enough to have played the Turbo back in its heyday, and we're not generally going to give you positive feedback when you post that kind of stuff. If you want to hang out here and do your thing, then you're just going to have to accept that there's going to be some blowback from us old farts. Honestly the best thing you can do is just tune it out.

I don't mind the blow back and I expected it. There's no reason to be rude with nonsense though talkin about my mom and African babies. Shits ridiculous! im not not gonna stick up for myself. I'm not that Facebook guy. I posted a few pics of my Turbo and games when I first signed on like a year ago. I was introducing myself to the forum the same way I had on the few I go to. Sorry if that rubbed people the wrong way. Just because alot of you grew up with the Turbo doesn't mean I'm not as into it as you guys. I grew up with lots of systems from nes to snes and so on. Turbo always eluded me. Same with Neo Geo.

I am pretty sure I still have the first handful of albums by the Circle Jerks.
Anyway, this thread is always going to inspire snarky posts.
So, really, the best thing is to simply play a game. Any game. Or, if you're too busy, read about something PCE/TG-16. Or listen to song from a game. Or look at some cover art.
Literally, anything connected to TG-16 beyond simply purchasing an item.
If you do this, then you are home.
Don't even post about your flirtations with PCE/TG-16.
Just know that you are home.
Home.

I actually got a chuckle out of that 1 myself but it's like 1 of the only sets I actually qualified for besides Tales of series as Im not a complete set kinda guy. I've never really set out to complete any system sets or whatever. Having a complete nes or turbo set never appealed to me cuz I know there would be alot of games I would never play.

There's nothing wrong with that. But that stuff just doesn't resonate with us.
This.
There are literally dozens of other avenues for communities and communication filled with people who share this possession over played mindset, and PCEFX happens to be one of the few that does not. Why do some insist on trying and force and shoehorn in this mentality into a group of people who obviously do not share the same opinion, especially when it's one of the minority that does not want that culture here.
It sucks to say, but there's a lot of stubborn people here, and heck, I'd say it's stubborn in its own right to not venture outside of such a specific hardware manufacturere - so what do you expect! The fact is, if you want to flash your collections somewhere, this is probably a place that will get more of a negative reaction than a positive one, where most other sites would collectively ejaculate - it brings the PCEFXers tears to see so games imprisoned behind a wall of backlog for the sake of vanity.
Then the whole thing derails into this shit slinging competition. I'd hope what everyone is saying is be modest about your game collection, be thankful you can play these awesome games you have, and be respectful of the culture and peoples affinity towards the hive mind ant-collectard mindset of this forum :)

It'a amazing that nintendoage has imaginary tokens for collectards to collect, which they earn from collecting real games.
Was it on nintendoage that some was selling a repro or homebrew game with "limited edition" homemade magnets or something? And people were buying multiple copies to try to complete the "set" that someone made in their basement and the actual game was an afterthought?

WTF is a "complete series set" for Earthbound?
Also, having never been to that forum (I've only heard stories. About 300 of them.) I had no idea the forum itself so actively encouraged collectard insanity. Now I can confidently say that it isn't just the people, it's the place.
Also, "Don't hate on Nintendo Age" followed by a f*cking emoticon is seriously inflamitory speach. I'm not going to say I hope he shoots himself in the foot cleaning his Zapper collection or anything but...that sure would be remarkable, wouldn't it? Because it impossible? That's what I find funny about that joke anyway.

The badges are pretty ridiculous, and do look like shit. NintendoAge cannot be taken seriously based on the bathtub full of miller lite in their room at MGC last year. It was like one of those high-school parties that you didn't go to because you knew that everyone was square, had shit taste in music, and had the personality of drying plaster.
Some of them were nice, but wading through a roomful of teenage adults to find the one person who likes Metroid or Kid Icarus or Zelda on FDS or actually PLAYS their famicom games and doesn't want to show me how they have Pokemon on a flip-screen thing with a stylus. ...All the mario-wankery was just too much for me.
...much like the year 2016 and the movie Idiocracy, sometimes it's hard to tell stupid fantasy from stupid reality.
The producer was interviewed a few weeks ago and said that his movie is now a documentary.

All of this Gen X on Millennial violence. When will it all end? Hopefully never because I hate the f*cks. I grew up when games were 50-60 bucks and allowance was 5 bucks a week, if you were lucky, and Mongoose was a bike you DIDN'T buy from Wal-Mart.

I'll take it from your response that you were serious, but believe me it's equally believable as a truth or a lie. That is a seriously stupid mechanism and, much like the year 2016 and the movie Idiocracy, sometimes it's hard to tell stupid fantasy from stupid reality
I actually kinda feel sorry for you a$$holes. You never knew a time when video games were something too big to ever collect. It's all about checking boxes and constant validation with you dicks.
I know right, darn those a$$holes & Dicks! I often get mad at shit I can't control because I have an opinion then go on forums and belittle people because they are different than me and couldnt possibly appreciate games more or have played them longer than they i have, so i let them know about it to make me feel better about my situation which definately doesn't need validation....
....Please someone read this and comment on it so I know how cool my words are so I can come back on later and find some self worth...

At least that's for accomplishing something. Buying shit for a badge is not at all even close.
Absolutely. The NA badges are purely for fueling collectardation. Ironic that they are all slapping each other on the back even as they make it harder for each other to accomplish their own collectard goals...

The irony is that they only have to say that they posses anything to win the awards and that you can collect them all without actually collecting real games, but they do it anyway for the glory.

That reminds me, when were razor scooters a thing?
I think that started in 2000. That's when I first noticed kids zipping around the neighborhood on them.
Seconded. Way after Mongoose, Redline and Schwinn Stings were cool. f*ck I'm old.
I had 2 mongooses and a redline in the 90s! :P I remember working a ton of odd jobs during summer to raise money for all of em! My first mongoose was blue and ended up getting stolen out of our garage :/ 2nd was green, and the redline was orange. Loved those bikes. Can't remember what ever happened to em. Probably traded em for games later on..
Was just looking around and I'm pretty sure my blue mongoose was a motivator and the green one was an expert pro? Maybe? Or Stylist Pro. I'm not positive. And don't remember what kinda redline I had.

I always wondered what was up with those old man boy scouts, like the ones that are "scouting" in the 12th grade and go on massive canoe trips and shit. I would see them in the newspaper sometimes, local kids, because apparently its a huge deal to be an Eagle Scout, and it would confuse me because at that point in life I hadn't known any kid that had been into that scout bullshit for like 4-5 years, I'm talking about when I was old enough to be hanging out with kids with cars, Iron Maiden records, large caliber firearms, porn collections, etc at this point but aparently there is some mechanism to stay a "scout" past the point of high school graduation!?

Yeah, I'm not into the VGA thing. I'm just saying there's nice people there. I try not to hate on people just cuz they like to do things differently than me. Not everyone there has vga games or whatever and I usually speak my mind when things like that come up though. Or full set collectors. I just never saw the point. I only have games I want to play. Sold all my sealed games I was never gonna open, doubles and fluff I didn't want a couple years ago. That's actually what helped fund my entry into Turbografx. I sorta reevaluated my collection and trimmed the fat to fund other games I was interested in. For about 12 years I hadn't sold or traded anything until that moment a couple years ago.

Speaking of fringes of society stuff:
Quote
I'm quite the Macross fan and all. I have the DRYL Perfect Edition CAV laserdisc. I was mail ordering Macross model kits from photocopied catalogs that said, "Check your local TV listings soon for "Robotech", the English version of Macross!!!" hand written in the margins. I had Kawamori draw me an SD VT-1D, which sits framed on my dresser. Etc etc...
Quote
I remember a long time ago there was this skinny dude with a beard that would always be able to get you out of print Japanese model kits, Macross and stuff. This was before email. Like, 1987 or something. Between mailing him a letter ("Can you get a Max Type movie version VF1J 1/110th scale?), getting a reply letter ("Yeah, sure, when I go to Japan next spring."), sending him a payment (checks sometimes took months to clear in the 80s), and then him sending the kit it would sometimes take nine months or more. It sounds crazy now (Hobby Link Japan can have this kit on my door in 5 days flat now) but I can't emphasize enough that this guy was a f*cking hero back in the day because it was him or nothing. Its fully possible that that Urashiman kit sat on his living room table for a month before he mailed it to me without me knowing, but I will never forgot the fun I had as a kid finally getting my package from guys like him and other shops and stuff. This shit taught me patience.
While the guys Zeta's criticizing were outdoors hiking through the wilderness, he was indoors at home meticulously working on the latest addition to his Japanese model kit collection.
If Zeta didn't know anyone still doing scouting type stuff, it's probably because he already filled his social circle's role of resident "weirdo". I don't doubt that he may very well have gotten to hang around people with far fewer hang ups than him, but I can't imagine joining in with his buddies, after a long day of shooting beer bottles in the woods, head banging to Maiden while getting high. Going by his posting history here, I can only envision him waving his figure at them for having Eddie tattoos and making such poor life choices, while counting down the days until the proliferation of the internet. So he could finally take breaks from modeling to criticize the life choices of people he's never even met.
I don't think that Zeta was molested during his clandestine meetings with that skinny bearded gentleman. I'm sure he was a great guy and all that, but Zeta simply *must* have heard by now that it isn't cool to be old enough to drive yourself to the meet up with your out-of-print Japanese model kit importer.
But I actually think that Zeta's hobbies are cool, or at least I find them interesting, even if they're not for me. I have other nerdy/geeky/weirdo stuff that I spend my limited free time on. But just like many older scout enthusiasts, my free time is limited because I have a relatively normal and fulfilled life outside of my non-mainstream hobbies.
Everyone active on this forum is a "weirdo". If you're socially well-adjusted, you know exactly how it sounds to a regular adult, if you explain exactly what the PC Engine is and the kinds of discussions which take place here. You don't have to shove it in people's faces, but you shouldn't feel insecure about your passions in life.

You guys missed the point entirely.
While I'm not an "outdoors kid" by any means, I wasn't critiquing woodsy crap, but rather that anyone at the age of 17 would voluntary give themselves more deadlines and people to answer to and...hanging out with surrogate dads and shit like that. It reaks of desperation and neediness, and while it's blatantly obvious that model kits are dorkier than canoeing (academic, I'm sure, since I'm pretty sure there's a merit badge for both) all that associated horse shit is exclusive to scouting. It's not the activities themselves, it's the need to experience and to enforce even more structure on kids. Nobody gives a f*ck if you're late for a Star Trek club meeting and nobody makes you say the pledge of allegiance before being yelled at for not folding the flag correctly.
And as for insinuations for pedophilla...well, we know that's not an issue in scouting historically because those Bible thumping "good guys" only just decided to allow gays last year so that would have made all that totally impossible, right?

As I said, I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout.
I enjoyed many aspects of it (camping, learning basic survival skills, learning about nature), but even as a kid there were many things I found "off-putting":
(1) undeniably strong presence of religion (Christianity) permeated the handbooks, activities, philosophies, etc. My local troops were all organized out of churches (leadership in Scouts were prominent members of congregation)...Boy Scouts, as an organization, was in many ways interchangeable with religious youth groups (that I also participated in).
(2) even stronger, and more problematic, was the blind patriotism/nationalism. Don't get me started on this. Even my Catechism teachers acknowledged that questioning the status quo was important (every now and then, anyway, otherwise, Jesus would have been a hoodlum). The institutional desire for conformity in the Scouts seemed even more suffocating/oppressive than in church, if you can believe it. (Presbyterian and Roman Catholic, for the curious)
(3) Hunting/Fishing. I enjoyed marksmanship, but I stupidly opened my mouth about why I thought hunting/fishing was unsportsmanlike. Ha! That earned me some harsh rebuke from leadership team. Also, I didn't like the way animals were treated, but I didn't say anything about that.
-----------
Remember, my critique of Scouts started when I was a kid, when I didn't even understand all the institutional problems the organization had with homophobia, pedophilia, racism, etc.
I am sure folks have had different experiences with the Scouts.
I feel like I was the last generation to experience *some* of the OLD SKOOL scouts...I was definitely part of a "transition" where the national organization was trying to be more inclusive. Early-to-mid 80's.

Well, the scouts is a Christian organization. The Mormon church has been sponsoring it for the past 100 years. As for the patriotism, the Boy Scouts have traditionally been involved stateside during wartime, especially WWI and WWII. Interestingly, if you make it to Eagle Scout and join the military, you are automatically promoted to E-3. I can't find a reason for this, but there ya go.
On a personal note, I had a friend in high school who made it to Eagle Scout when he was a senior. I was invited to the ceremony, even. The guy didn't seem to have many friends, and I remember wondering why anyone would want to spend time involved with such a group once they discovered that girls were a thing. Kudos to him, I guess. It takes a lot of dedication to make it that far. It's just not for me.

I don't like doing anything that involves effort which won't result in me getting money or vagina at the end, so I kinda see the anti-scout argument, especially from a non-conformist point of view.
However, the older I get the more I turn to socialism, which is the ultimate conformity and ironic considering my money and vagina point of view.
At the end of the day I don't criticize anyone's hobbies, groups, fetishes, etc... because if you pull back the layers everyone has some deviant tendencies.

No, those are jocks. They're just disgusting. They don't do anything anywhere near as meaniful as what scouts do and they are one trillion times as proud. Whereas scouting attempts to Prepare you for anything, sports trains you in nothing useful whatever. It's like a training program designed to fill the planet with the worst people possible, egos that dwarf any skill set.
Thank you Esteban for saying what I was thinking. My negative opinion of scouting was formed at an early age as well and while I broke it off early (my mother made sure I could do these kinds of things if I wanted to but never forced me) it's hard not to "fill in the gaps" as you get older.
And the military angle isn't something I mentioned but it bothers me greatly. Imagine doing all that scouting crap as a teenager instead of getting laid and staring off into space just so you can do Basic between 11th and 12th grade, go full time before you're 20, getting your legs blown off at 21, divorced by 24, addicted to heroin by 25, dead by your own hand at 28, and never having actually lived a life free of externally enforced structure duty and obedience. It's a hellish thought.
Pinewood derby cars are great though. I loved those for real. My company has an annual race now and next year there will be a modified class. I'm working on a twin chassis suspension cheat for next year but I'm not going to go much further than planning until the rules are announced.

Edit: I REALLY wanted a Mongoose when I was a kid. Got a Murray from K-Mart instead. :(
Lol! I started with a Huffy. Eventually I had a Redline, GT, and a Gernaral. Man the General's were nice bikes, but kinda heavy. I loved my Redline for racing, and the GT was great for ramp.

being a serious skateboarder growing up, i never got into bikes. but man, the redlines were awesome. had a couple friends with them.
not knowing anything about bikes, for some reason those really resonated with me.

I did both. My first board was an Alva. I eventually went through a lot of decks when it went all new school around 92 and 93.

My first bike was a Murray 3000, which was a wannabe BMX bike from K-Mart and which I can't find a picture of anywhere on the internet. Then a couple of years later I got a Murray Street Machine which was a bit bigger, I think was a 3-speed, and had more of a mountain bike geometry. Later I got a Huffy that weighed a f*cking ton, and used to ride that 5 miles each way to work and back. Finally got a Specialized Rock Hopper, which was way better. Never did get to have a cool BMX bike.

At least some of you guys got Kmart bikes.
I sh@t you not, I had a goddamn Monsoon and Stingray when they were so f@cking not kool.
I wanted a 10-speed generic bike, from Kmart.
I had a red maroon Monsoon. It was a bigger frame than the two blue Stingrays I used in prior years.
I would pretend that I was 100% OK with having goofy bikes ancient eras...but I would have loved a "modern" one.
I have to admit, I am glad I learned to appreciate things that were out-of-fashion. Even if it was out of necessity.

I had a Huffy bootleg of a stingray that was all black (I think only the wheels were plated) that said "Space Invader" on the chain guard. Talk about uncool.
I went through a shitload of bikes back then until I eventually switched to skateboards. You get so much less hurt derfing on a skateboard. Also, bikes are several times the price of a skateboard.

Actually, that Murray 3000 was how I found out that K-Mart wasn't cool. I rode the bike to school the day after I got it and other kids noticed that I had a new bike, and someone asked where I got it. So I just told him, "K-Mart". Like so f*cking what? "Your family shops at K-Mart?!? You're poor!" Etc. etc. I had no idea that K-Mart had a bad rap. What the f*ck was wrong with K-Mart? They had a luncheonette and everything.
Do kids go through that shit today with WalMart and Target? Costco?

k-mart is pretty r@re and HTF now. at least in my neck of the woods. so maybe its "cool" to shop there now. regardless of the perception of being poor, walmart sells junk for bikes. just think of the careless, with zero knowledge of the product chain of custody. nobody that actually cares about it is involved in the end-to-end distribution of the bike.

I had a similar experience and reaction in middle school. Back when Super Mario 3 NES was initially released (late '80s) it was sold out at all the major local stores. I ended up finding a copy at K-Mart. A lot of my friends/classmates wanted to buy the game too and asked me where I found it. I told them at K-Mart and they had more copies if they wanted the game now. I basically received the same kind of negative response: "You and your family must be really cheap and poor to shop at K-Mart."
Back then I couldn't understand how buying a $55 NES game at K-Mart gave an impression that my family was poor.

People are A**holes, yo. I have fond memories of getting a bunch of HeMan figures at Kmart on clearance when I was very little. One of them being Grizzlor. Yay.

My family never had much money growing up so Fingerhut was the supplier if most of my Christmas gifts. I assume that by the following Christmas my parents paid off the past Christmas' gifts which they were charged 50% over retail... I guess it beats credit card debt?
I don't recall the indestructible boxes, but as a child from the era with styrofoam McNugget packages, I don't doubt it!

I went to a Roses while visiting relatives in North Carolina sometime around 2006. They had new in box Sega Saturns and a few sports games. That memory always stood out to me. They had been using shelf space for 10 years and would possibly never sell. I kinda of wish that I'd bought one of the Saturns but oh well, already had one.

Ah yeah, those, hah! They were 2nd place for me, always wanted those blue diamond backs as they were called. Also had to settle for K-Mart brands in the end... ;)
Wow, that came from BT ? Hahaha! *FEEL THE BERN!!*

I think most of that anti-Kmart stuff had to do with it being the 80/90s. $150 Polo shirts are nowhere near as popular as they are now, in fact compared to my preppy ass most kids look...homeless, pretty much, nowadays, so I doubt there is as much fashion shaming.
For anything but clothes, tools, bikes, and electronics though I don't really get the Kmart stigma. I got most of my Transformers and King Vitamin and whatnot from them and they come from the same factory as the ones they sold at Hudsons so it's a pretty stupid line of thought, IMO.

I grew up in a bumble f*ck town in Georgia named Rome. We had a Wal-Mart and a K-Mart. Every kid knew that you NEVER, EVER shopped at K-mart, even if you actually did, and that any toy you got for xmas or b-day was from Wal-Mart or Wilbro or, if it was a video game, KB Toys. I wore a pair of blue jeans to school in 1988, so about 8th grade, and because they were so blue (f*cking blue, sooooo f*cking blue), some kids asked me about them. They were Levi's and expensive so there was no questioning my parents taste...BUT I committed the forever sin of saying they got them at "JC Penney, right across the street from K-Mart". Those mother f*ckers heard "K-Mart" and for the next 5 years, my hands never touched quality boobs.
I had a Redline bicycle in 1979, most bad ass bike in Fort Worth Texas. I left it out front of my home one day and it was stolen because 5 year olds are f*cking irresponsible. My grandmother gave the police an apt description of a "colored guy" that made off with the bike, reinforcing the stereotype in my mind of a purple colored man stealing my things. When it was not recovered, and after I had sufficiently cried my eyes out for days, my parents bought me a Mongoose. I found out years later that it was a competition bike with a 3 piece pedal set and the frame was chromoly. I sold it to a dude in Australia in 2012, all beaten up and in shitty shape, for $900 bucks. True story.
I got fat after that and started playing video games. Fat dropped off, got some pussy, ruined for life and 20 odd years later, I'm on a website devoted to video games. Jesus H.

I remember this place. We had to drive to Atlanta to one but my father bought several lenses for his Minolta camera in the late 80's at that place for good prices. I think he might have bought my original Nintendo there (but he really got it at K-Mart. That's a secret) as well as games for xmas. Neat place that got edged out by Wal-Mart/K-Mart who is now being edged out by Amazon. Funny how that goes.
Good call on Service Merchandise. I had forgotten that name completely.

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Best was headquartered right here in Richmond and died off 2 years before Service Merchandise in 1997 (which actually lasted until 2001 before croaking at the very end of the year). I never knew.

That is crazy. Down here a whole slew of stores just disappeared in the late 80s early 90s. BEST and Zayres where the first to go then Service Merchandise and Ames. They seemed very popular and my cheap parents went there pretty regularly so I had a lot of childhood memories of the places. Anytime someone mentions them I always have fond memories.

Never got any game stuff at Service Merchandise. I only remember the merchandise rolling off a conveyor belt and I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid.
Also, never heard or seen Caldor stores on the west coast.
My family used to go to Macy's Clearance. I think Macy's still has clearance centers for discount and damage furniture only. In the '80s they used to discount everything from clothing to electronics. I got a Sega Master System with 3d glasses from there for cheap.

Loved the print Service Merchandise catalog too. That was Toy Porn for kids (even JCP used to have a sweet glossy catalog too with games as I recall, though maybe I am thinking of Sears)
Had Caldors in CT for sure; but to me they were like K-Mart was to some of you fellas. You didn't say when you got stuff there. Or when you bought clothes at Marshalls!
