August 22 - August 28: Override

Gunhed, Salamander, Gate of Thunder, R-Type, and many more classics. What do these have in common?
Are all household names on the PC Engine. But when someone says "Override", the other person goes "Huh? Never heard of it."
It's time for that to change. A true classic shooter is waiting for you to try it. Sting and Data East have crafted a wonderful vertical shooter. Too bad most people ignored it.
6 killer levels with a rocking soundtrack, unlimited screen clearing charge attacks, 5 power-ups, and tons of points and extra lives to rack up. Override's fans can attest to the fact that the amount of action on the screen is incredible.
It's not a hard game though, you will probably 1CC it on your first try. But a great game is a great game, and it's better than Final Soldier. Even Runinruder, a man who likes his shooters HARD, respects the game.

P.S. it loops endlessly and as far as I know the difficulty doesn't change much. Override all-nighter marathon anyone?

I beat this after a few tries. A fun game with awesome music, and pretty respectable grafx. :)
-
Lets not forget that this awesome game is also only on a 2 meg hucard. I do like that this game has gotten noticed over the past couple years. Not many used to really mention it, but it has always been a great game to me even if it is on the easy side.
-
I just discovered it about 6 months ago when it came in a bigger lot i bought on ebay.
Was pleasantly surprised when i popped it in for a go. Obviously, first thing that came to mind was blazing lazers, and thats just fine with me. Im glad this thread will motivate me to dust it off.
-
This was one of the first PCE games I bought because it was a cheap shootemup. It will be fun to play it again.
Is it actually better than Final Soldier?
THOSE ARE FIGHTING WORDS.

Hehe, they are about equal. I have more fun with Override though. Override also has better graphics.

I like Final Soldier a little more, but it's close.

I will have to play both, back-to-back :)
I am actually glad you mentioned Final Soldier, since it has been on my "to play" list for a long, long time now...I probably haven't played Final Soldier in a few years.
-
Fired this up today on my everdrive. My second run through I made it to the final boss but died a little ways into the battle. Most of the end stage bosses are pretty easy after waiting just a few seconds and thinking about them while simultaneously building up your charge shot (which is really cool too).
I'll hopefully beat this one within the next few days. Glad GoTW is back, got me to try another game :)
-
Great game. Intense action and tons of power ups like Blazing Lazers / Gunhead.
-
Don't have this game, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll definitely try to buy a copy next time I see one at a reasonable price. I've always sort of been a tertiary fan of [strike]shmups[/strike] shooter games, playing the odd one here or there but never really retaining enough interest to see a game through, but now with the TG-16, I am really getting hooked. So many great, original shooters, and the pad is perfect for them. A match made in heaven.
-
First time player here. "1CC it on your first try" was a little too optimistic, for me anyway. Without using any continues, I made it to the stage with the green floor and enemies coming out of large storage containers.
Do you guys have a sub-weapon of choice? I think the yellow one is the most versatile, but there are times when it seems wise not to use it. If I had to stick with one through the whole game, it would probably be blue. Are there any spots where you REALLY ought to use one particular sub-weapon?
Definitely a good game. Great pacing, nice graphics and music, good variety, and lots of action.
Thanks for writing this week's blurb, lukester!
-
Holy crap. NOW I really want to play this again!
-
Red at full power becomes a homing ring blaster. Nothing else comes close imo.
That's what I used. Great weapon for exactly this purpose.
However, lukester and I were curious what the P's did. At first I though they upgraded your regular pea-shooter, but now I'm not so sure. They don't add any points or anything
-
I gave Overdrive a shot today on my everdrive, and it instantly made me thankful for joining the GoTW for recommendations like this.
First, thanks for starting this off with a DataEast game! The style of this game is so representative of them too, from the fonts to the animations and colors used on the various UI
The pace of the game and the manic onslaught of action was thrilling, but the clean spritework made it fairly easy to track what was going on.
I generally love the unique ship designs. I really like the paralax scrolling on level 2, and the transition from the forest to the sandy area in the first level - great stuff. The feeling of diving deeper into the world each time you finish a level, after defeating a boss that comes up from the lower level, is just so awesome. The scaling animation as the boss comes up out of the ground is rad.
I realized how terrible I am as I used my last credit on level 3, but the game does not seem impossible and I am hopeful that I can conquer it with some practice and with more focus when playing.
I had a blast with my first attempt, and cant wait to try again. I feel like a kid that ran out of quarters at the arcade, cant wait to go back and try again.
-
Well I finally beat it today. I agree that it's fairly easy, but that definitely doesn't take away from it. For whatever reason when I play shooters, I have to 1cc them or else I don't consider it beaten. In fact, I won't even try to beat it with continues. I'll continue on to practice later stages, but that's about it. I think this is a nice shooter to practice my skills at and get myself better for more difficult ones. I'd say I'm slowly getting better. One game at a time.
I finished this round with about 7 lives left. At one point I had around 13 or so in stage 6. So entering the final boss with 10 lives provided some nice cushioning so I could figure out it's pattern (which I pretty much did, was tricky for me). I also really like stage 4's track the most. I was bobbing my head throughout that whole stage.
It reminds me a lot of Super Star Soldier (yes I know the comparison has already been made) in that, for a good chunk of the game you're dodging power ups you don't want and collecting things you already have. Only collecting another 'P' or colored icon doesn't provide a screen-clearing blast or anything. I don't even think it gives you extra points, so it really just becomes a bit of a burden. However, it does make building yourself back up after a stupid death much easier. So I can't really decide which side I'm for, really.
Also, I noticed that when you've completed the game, you just restart. I remember seeing that mentioned somewhere before but I couldn't find it. It would be interesting to see some crazy high scores challenges going for multiple runs of this game. I started to play the beginning of stage 1 after I had beaten it, but nothing appeared to be different/more challenging. Wonder if this takes the "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" approach  I might try that later in the week if I get more time, but I'm glad I beat this one.
Great game, hopefully I can own it one day. For now, I'm just looking forward to the next game on the list. I hope I stay active with these (as do all of you as well).

Wow, what a game

A lot of fun, and as jtucci31 said, a great training game for those of us who are not seasoned veterans of the genre

I have only played about 5 minutes of this game. I really need to try it again.

This is my recommendation:

I had written a little guide/FAQ for this year's ago, but it was lost in a fire (harddrive R.I.P.)
I have a soft spot for games that are a little rough/generic.

Ditto, pretty much. I'll get my thoughts together a bit later, but for now, thanks for the push to go ahead and play this fun game!

I was away all week, so I couldn't track it down in time. I think I'll pick it up anyway. Looks like you lot had a lot of fun beating this one.

Alrighty, here are my thoughts about this fun game.
I rated this fast-paced vertical shoot-'em-up as an '8 out of 10'. I played through and beat this game today without too much difficulty, and I am not an expert shoot-'em-up gamer, but more of a slog-through-the-game-using-as-many-live-and-continues-as-necessary type of gamer.
While a bit more basic than some other shoot-'em-ups, the game is actually quite fun! The worst that I can say about it is that the backgrounds of some stages can be somewhat bland, and it does not support 2-player. Other than that, it's just plain good. It has your basic pea-shooter which can be upgraded up to 5 times with 'P' power-ups which are quite prolific, and it has 4 different types of external weapons pods which can be upgraded up to 3 times. You also have a 3-hit shield allowing you to take 4 hits before you die and lose all of your power-ups. You can also get a shield power-up which will refill your shield by 1 hit. You may also adjust the speed of your ship in-game between 3 levels. I prefer the 2nd speed level.
The best thing about this game may be the special attack. If you just stop shooting and dodge bullets, your special attack will charge up, and when fired, it releases a screen-wiping blast of fire which will also destroy enemy projectiles! It is unlimited, so this adds an element of strategy to this game where at times, one's best option to beat a level or boss may be to not blindly turbo-fire your main weapon and simply dodge and blast, dodge and blast. I personally found the level 4 boss to be the most difficult, and spent quite a bit of time on him. Imagine my dismay when confronted by him again in the 6th (last) stage with a boss rush. :/
Overall this game is quite worthy of a place in the game library of anyone who enjoys shoot-'em-ups.
I added a high score thread for this game (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=19641.0) in the High Scores Discussion Board (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?board=21.0) for any who wish to have their high scores immortalized. 8)
Thanks again lukester for suggesting this game for the Game of the Week and to SamIAm for the whole Game of the Week idea and program.

Well I was finally getting the hang of it and really enjoying this game when my TEDV2 decided to crap out...
This was playing through RF on a TG16.. I thought this configuration was okay...
I am sending it back to krikzz, hopefully the exchange don't take too long...
That said, it really reminds me of the Star Soldier series as well as the Cybercore power-up system, except I thought it felt more forgiving.
Maybe I am wrong but it seemed I didn't lose anything with my red p/up when I accidentally grabbed a purple- the next red one put me back to where I was...

No you're right. That is how the power-up system works. Another reason why the game is so easy, but still so good.

Just finished this today as my first shoot em up clear.
Thanks for the suggestion, and I am excited to start next week's game.
