Title: What are the best Master System titles?
Post by: ProfessorProfessorson on September 01, 2015, 07:06:45 AM
Shoot me some names. Basically anything that works fine on a ntsc setup. I have a pal switch installed but prefer to stick with titles that can work in ntsc.

I agree 100%. Some titles I enjoyed on the Master System: Wonderboy games Phantasy Star Bubble Bobble Asterisk and Obelix Zillion Ultima 4 (best console version) Spy vs Spy Rampage Double Dragon (flicker and all)
Lots of games, too many to list :)

someone should point this out.
Ultima 4 is f*cking expensive and was only released in Europe, and it also ditches the first person dungeons, so that sucks.

Just going to release my list:
Bomber Raid Choplifter Enduro Racer Global Defense Golden Axe Warrior Line of Fire Kenseiden Castle of Illusion (Mickey Mouse) Land of Illusion (Mickey Mouse) Legend of Illusion (Mickey Mouse) [Skip these three if you didn't like or weren't overly excited by the Genesis games.] Ninja Gaiden Paperboy [Best version of this game on a console.] Penguin Land Phantasy Star Power Strike Power Strike II Psycho Fox Quartet Scramble Spirits Shinobi Sonic Chaos Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Thunder Blade Wonder Boy in Dragon’s Trap Zillion
A number of these, and others on other people's lists, are actually PAL games that were just capable of running on a NTSC system. Sonic the Hedgehog comes to mind. The only difference was the box (US had a sticker), otherwise the game is the same and was optimized for PAL consoles, not US ones.

Every game designed in Japan, even if only released in PAL territories, is tuned for NTSC without any problem.

What games are Pal specific then, that do not run, or run well in NTSC, like run to fast or have glitches? I planned to pick up Renegade for sure, but did want to make sure that game would play well. Scramble Spirits was on my mind too, as was Aerial Assault, if it is any good. This is what I have currently:
Rambo II Shinobi Spy vs Spy Not so Great Basketball Aztec Adventure Hang On/ Astro Warrior Hang On/Safari Hunt Y's Kenseiden Quartet Double Dragon Zillion Wonderboy in Monster Land Paper Boy Spellcaster Rastan Enduro Racer Thunder Blade Outrun Time Soldiers GhostBusters Wonder Boy Lord of Sword Alien Syndrome Miracle Warriors Zillion II Ghost House
As of this past weekend Choplifter is on the way.

I enjoy all versions of Ultima IV except NES, but SMS will always be my favorite. Not only was it released in Canada, but many say that it was also released in the U.S.
I don't know what passes as expensive anymore, but you can BIN for $11 on eBay and with case and manual for less than Atlantean.

You don't absolutely have to but it's always a good thing if you had a way to access the FM tunes for those games that support it.

I couldn't find any CIB auctions of it on Master System that cheap. Cheapest one I saw was a loose cart from France.

I have Renegade. I beat it years ago and from what I remember it worked fine in NTSC.
Also Master of Darkness is a decent Castlevania clone. A Euro release only but works fine in NTSC.

The only PAL games I can think of that don't work with NTSC consoles are:
New Zealand Story (doesn't work at all, except in a Power Base Converter)
Desert Strike (works, but garbled graphics during gameplay)
Chase HQ (timer counts down too fast, road graphics may possibly be glitchy, can't remember)

When looking for the best deals on SMS games, make sure to search for "SEGA MASTER" separately from "SMS" and the game title.
Thats the one I saw that was in France, it isn't CIB. Thats what I went looking for, one that was CIB for $11. :P There isn't any copies that are CIB for 11 bucks currently. Really the one from France will run a bit over $20 after shipping and paypal currency conversion fees or whatever. I think most of the ones that are CIB exceed the $50 range, so it's not really a "cheap" game per say.

Like I said, it's not an expensive game to buy to play, not a dirt cheap game to collect CIB (unless you are a legit CIB collector), but still cheaper with case and manual than Atlantean, which I wouldn't call "f*cking expensive".
$35 in case with manual (as complete as most SMS games) is considered a good price for a good game by PCE game player standards.
If you happen to live in a place that is expensive to ship to, that's independant of the game's value, but that game + case + manual copy is OBO.

Scramble Spirits Rampage Kung Fu Kid World Grand Prix Cyborg Hunter Golvellius Action Fighter
I like hybrid, quirky games with ambition.
Golvellius falls into that category.
Knowing your interests, this is the sort of game you will absolutely be able to appreciate (unlike folks who aren't interested/skilled in many genres).
Now, whether or not you think it is more than an average game is for you to decide.
For me, it is one of the reasons to have SMS.
Also, you didn't ask about Sega Card games (and they aren't anything special), but there are a couple you might want—TransBot, because it is hori shootemup; Spy vs. Spy, because...I don't know—just to see what the medium could offer.
Sega Card did not really get fully exploited...never had a chance to mature and come into its own. I think it could have been pretty kool, but I totally understand why it wasn't meant to compete with "deluxe, full mega power games" in cart form. Nintendo's FDS was a better experiment (in terms of game library)...a "budget-friendly" library if games...

Nobody's mentioned Sagaia yet, but I think it's a pretty good port considering the hardware. It was the first Darius game I ever beat. ^-^
Also, be sure to find a way to play GG Aleste II for it, as it's been hacked to run on SMS. I think GG Shinobi might have gotten a similar treatment, if I'm not mistaken.
Also, I'm probably the only one that feels this way, but I really enjoy Shadow Dancer in short bursts. Its harder than a Viagra-abusing teenager, but the graphics are really appealing & I don't find it too much more unfair than many other 8-bit games.
Road Rash also has a decent port on the system, better looking than any other racing game on the system IMO.

Oh yeah, speaking of Sega Cards I forgot about Ghost House. That sucker is hard, maybe a bit repetitive, but I definitely enjoyed it quite a bit. Reminded me of Sega's version of Goonies but with vampires and such.

Sagaia is in the second response.
It's known more for being a tech demo, but it's still a solid fun game.

Yeah, it definitely has its moments, like the slowdown, and how the whole game pauses to load the first boss...and the last level is near-friggin-impossible thanks to that super techy background making it difficult to dodge bullets...But still, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a better sidescrolling space shooter in the 8-bit generation. The only others I can think to compare are Gradius II and Over Horizon on the NES/fami.
Sorry I missed the post, though!

That's the thing, you still have to be able to appreciate 8-bit shooters. Although the slowdown is no worse than many celebrated NES games, Sagaia was rebalanced nicely for SMS and the ship and bullet size work out well. Kind of like how Super Darius II was rebalanced for single screen console play.

Ultima IV isn't really worth playing on SMS honestly. Not having the first person dungeons, and not having the ability to enter text to talk to people makes the game less fun.
Just skip it and play the DOS one with VGA upgrade + MIDI patch, and tell DOSBox to use a Roland Sound Canvas.
It blows the cunt out of the SMS one.

Sure, if it is someone's virginal experience with Ultima IV...
But if you've played IV, it is totally fun to see how the various ports were implemented for SMS/NES/etc.

Cool to see some SMS chat here. I've got the full US/Europe set and most of the Japanese releases too. The Master System, like the TG-16, has an amazing amount of quality first-party games and arcade ports compared to bad games because there were few third-party developers.
What kind of genres do you like most, Prof? I could better recommend then.
Here are some underrated games for the system that are pretty cheap:
Kenseiden - one of the best games on the system, a ninja platformer kind of like Samurai Ghost but better, a rare game that uses Feudal Japan as a backdrop and offers up non-linear gameplay and the ability to learn new attacks through training. Just awesome. Aztec Adventure - fun overhead action game with a gimmick of bribing enemies with cash to join you, has a great ending. Enduro Racer - cool isometric spin on Excitebike, the Japanese version has double the levels, but the American version has one of the most hilariously inspirational endings ever. Astro Warrior - simple shmup but with some solid tunes and a just-right difficulty. Danan: The Jungle Fighter - as close as the SMS would come to Legendary Axe. A little clunky, but has character. The Ninja - addicting game that's kind of like a shooter on the ground. Relies a lot on timing but feels so good once you memorize the levels and just shuriken your way through everything. Lord of the Sword - fun Zelda 2/Ys III side-scrolling Action RPG. Has some great art in the later levels. Penguin Land - really unique and fun platformer/puzzle hybrid Quartet - fun 2-player game that's kind of a shmup/action hybrid Rastan - good port of the arcade game Rescue Mission - cool light gun game that's overhead and you're goal is to protect a cart on rails rather than just shooting bad guys like every other light gun game Thunder Blade - pretty faithful port of the arcade that's better than the Genesis version Alex Kidd: High-Tech World - super-quirky game that's half RPG where you're exploring your mansion trying to find pieces to a map so you can go to the arcade, then the second half is a pretty challenging little Shinobi-like action platformer. Filled with personality and SEGA references.

I don't limit myself to what can be argued as technically the "best" version of any one game. I love SMS Ys with or without FM sound and I'd love to play an imperfect version of Ultima IV on PC Engine. If extra features make any version the best, then we should all toss our consoles and stick to emulation.
Title: Re: What are the best Master System titles?

The ability to talk to NPCs and actually have to investigate/converse with them was one of the strongest points to Ultima IV's game engine. Not having it cheapens the adventurous experience. You get presented with a dropdown of possible options.
*any* computer version of the game trumps the console versions for this reason. The console ones eliminate a large portion of what made the game fun.
I am also unsure why SMS version had no first person dungeon crawling and went with the Ultima VI style dungeons. The SMS is capable of the dugneons. Phantasy Star did it.
I would go with the NES one simply because it's an entirely new spin on the game, with actual consolized concepts, instead of looking like the PC one, but with problems.

Per many of your guys post, it looks like I already have a lot of what some of you recommended, like Ghost House, Kenseiden, etc, which is great. Definitely still more to get, and I will work my way up the list of good titles. I had a MS years back as an early teen, with about 18-20 games or so. I loved the thing, but back then my gaming was limited to RF on a Master System 2 on a tv that had issues, and sometimes the color would flake out and the screen would go B&W. Now I am finally able to revisit the library and play it right, so very pleased. :)

Danm you for taking mine. Love that game! Probably my favorite on the system because of the first person radar companied with the metroid like level design, and I enjoy the graphics quite a bit though rough in spots. And you can't beat the box art :) (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Cyborg_hunter_cover.jpg)
Honestly though, if you can stomach jrpg's, get into some phantasy star. I got so addicted when I went to play through the game again recently. I ended up downloading an app for my phone called "phantasy star maps" that allowed me to plot my course through the various dungeons. Maps are key.
Dick Tracey has a great version on this system.
There are also quite a few very enjoyable light gun games. Rescue mission, gangster town, and wanted to name a few :)
Enjoy, it's a lovely little system.
Edit: I had recently picked up SpellCaster but have not had much time to play it - so far it's a great game. if you pick that up I would love to continue playing it and get a group discussion going. It's a fascinating game that was followed up by Mystic Defender on the genesis.

I've been on a SMS kick the past few years, picked up db-elec FM thingy that renewed my interest. I had a Master System next to my NES bitd, but when I got the PBC, I traded of the console and kept only r-type, Golden Axe and P.Star.
Since then, I've bought and sold a good chunk of titles, but ended up with keeping these:
Action Fighter <- Found this to be more enjoyable than Bomber Raid Alex Kidd in miracle world <- Mainly for it being the mascot California Games <- Surfing is my jam and has FM support Choplifter <- it's way hard, but slick parallax Double Dragon <- everyone heralds it for being 2p Enduro Racer <- I really enjoy this one, simple but fun Golden Axe <- love the graphic style Golvellius <- Music is tops Hang-on/Astro Warrior <- My original pack-in, LOVE Hang-on Phantasy Star <- my first console RPG, f*ck Final Fantasy! R-type <- SO GOOD! Reason to keep the console. Rambo First Blood part II <- Recent pick up, I enjoy it. Rampage <- FM tunes do it justice. Might be repetitive but I keep coming back to it. Rastan <- great 8-bit port albeit shorter levels Time Soldiers <- I'm a big Ikari Warriors fan form the arcade, TS was always a runner up.

I didn't recommend Time Soldiers (SMS) because it is so different than the arcade original I loved playing back in the day.
Personally, the SMS game should be given a different title, then I would be happier. It is a mediocre SMS game, and is NOT WORTHY of the honorable Time Soldiers name.
Time Soldiers = one of my favorite games in middle school. Local deli had it. So much fun. I think it replaced Robocop, which I loved playing because I could beat it on a quarter. I don't think I ever beat Time Soldiers on only one quarter (but I could get damn far).
Dual rotating sticks were so friggin' sweet, the constant warping to different eras is a concept that WOULD STILL BE AWESOME TODAY. At least, for me, anyway.

I will probably skip Transbot. It's not a long game at all, more of a early tech demo, not really worth the asking price. If they would have given the game a couple more levels it would have been cool. Bomber Raid just looks solid, so I am sure I will enjoy it.

Guys, I have a question:
I'd really like to get "Renegade" or "Target: Renegade" but I read the MS version is supposedly vastly superior to the NES one. Problem: I've never ever seen it for sale. Does it really exist?
Granted, I don't check eBay too often since I much rather buy within communities and forums, but considering I've been on the lookout for it for what?....three years now? I think it should've popped up at least once. Really strange.

I believe they're the same game, actually. Sometimes it's called "Renegade" and sometimes "Target: Renegade".
And wow, it's on eBay indeed. It wasn't when I last looked, but that was a while ago. Still hoping I'll find it on some forum someday but it's good to know that they do appear on eBay from time to time. Thanks!

No. They are two different games. Renegade on MS is a enhanced port of the original arcade game. Target, on Nes and Euro computers is just a eurotrash sequel.

Transbot ... I got it, played it, shrugged, and sold it.
Pretty much the same here.
Yes, but if you never played it, wouldn't you still be curious about it? :)
Oh, I was ever since I saw the placard at TRU bitd. Of course "Transbot" and "Transformers" was on my mind, the fact that it mentions transformations on the back of the box had me. I only picked it up a few years ago to quench my intrigue, but alas...repetitive game play, timed special weapons and the weapon roulette?! Reminded my of the Macross game on FC.

Ha! I have a Macross game for Famicom (repetitive).
But, there is some other, better mech game, around same vintage as the Macross game...you can walk on land, fly as jet, etc.
Anyway, TransBot is nothing special...but I'm not getting rid of it.

If you have a CRT still (and you should!) the 3D games are worth it. The effect is really good and for the shooter Blade Eagle 3D it adds another element since you can play in either the foreground or the background that only the 3D can reveal. Real underrated game, and pretty much all the 3D games (Space Harrier, OutRun, Missile Defense, Maze Hunter) are all a ton of fun.

Transbot was the greatest con ever. I remember my brother buying it with his birthday money for £25 from wh smith in Ilford, Essex, England. Cartridge version. remember it vividly to this day. Getting it home doing the overworkd, underworld and then the robot boss. Then it just started over. THAT WAS IT Oh and that music repeating over and over. In short transbot isn't worth my left jacket potato.

Hahahahaha.
I got the game for a few dollars (video store was getting rid of it). I would have been very upset paying $$$ for TransBot!

Yeah I mean if I saw it for like $4-5 shipped I'd buy it for the f*ck of it. But people want like $13 on up or some crap. There are way too many better games I can get at that asking price.

I have a TransBot that I'd be willing to price down pretty cheap if anyone want to buy a whole setup. I'd like to sell this Master System, and a game or two with it is the best way to do so, but of what I have, I only want to sell 2: TransBot and The Ninja.

I almost wouldn't mind picking up another system in a buy or trade to have a spare around. I had actually intended to eventually pick up a SMS 2 deck just to have in fact, but if the right deal came along, I'd def grab a spare SMS1.

I was recently playing Altered Beast on SMS, as I have never played the game before (yes, I am being serious:). Despite the fact that it plays bad I am really enjoying it. Cool sprites and overall atmosphere. I imagine that if I had the genesis version I wouldn't even bother mentioning it -but- if you have never played it and you dont have a genesis it is worth it in my opinion.
Double dragon: having played the arcade(which is awesome), the nes version(which plays good!) and the sms version I will say that the sms version reminds me a lot of the arcade version. And that is a plus. It is much harder than the nes version. Recommended.
Alex kidd in shinobi world, cute game, plays great. It is the only alex kidd I have ever played so I cant compare it to its predecessors but I really enjoy it.
And last but not least, dragonlance: heroes of the lance ad&d etc. I have just ordered this game as I have really fond memories. The detail of the gameplay is very deep, the graphics are great but it was hard and there was no save damn it... Absolutely recommended.

Related to the Ultima IV debate: there is a great version of the game in the link that follows for all the C64 owners: http://www.indieretronews.com/2015/03/ultima-iv-remastered-now-available-for.html
The game is legendary, I can play it forever.

I went on a big SMS kick a few years ago, mainly some of the PAL titles since, even though seeing SMS games in my area was very rare, I wanted to try out some stuff that was released in Europe where the console was quite successful.
If you are going to look for PAL games and cannot find any locally and have to resort to Ebay, I recommend doing worldwide searches and buying from European or Australian sellers. Some of these have already been mentioned, but here's my two cents: Asterix Series: - Asterix - Asterix and the Great Rescue - Asterix and the Secret Mission *The Asterix titles are all solid platformers. The Disney Games: - Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse - Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse - Donald Duck's Lucky Dime Caper - Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck They are not as good as the NES Capcom Disney games, but they are solid, straightforward platformers if that is something you enjoy. - Master of Darkness A great Castlevania style game. Not as fun as the original Castlevania, but a solid title nonetheless. - Ninja Gaiden It's cool because it is not like the NES or PCE versions. The level layouts and bosses are different. I'm not the biggest fan of the SMS controller, but the controls in this game work surprisingly well. Having the pause button on the console will become a big bother in this game when you want to quickly pause the game to access the situation you are in. Sonic Games - Sonic 1 - Sonic 2 - Sonic Chaos I was never really impressed by the "speed" aspect of the Sonic games on the Genesis. It just didn't appeal to me. I actually prefer these versions because there's more emphasis on platforming and correctly timing your jumps. Sonic Chaos is a little too easy though if you don't pay attention to getting. The hangliding parts of Sonic 2 are pretty cool.
And of course there's always any of the Wonder Boy series games.

I need to post what all I ended up settling with on the system. I ended up getting like 40 games or so. I will probably pick up a few more down the road, but decided to switch my focus to other systems like Nes for the time being.

I had a classmate/friend that had a Master System back during elementary school, and when possible I'd try to come over to get to play TransBot since the shooter genre is my favorite next to RPGs.
EDIT: While I see the negative posts on it, I'd still recommend it, but not if the price has gone crazy or something. I enjoyed it for what it was.

I might have mentioned this earlier, but my favorite thing about the SMS is that the ratio of good to bad/sports games is very favorable. It's a great system to collect for, because there's a limited library (114 US games), the games all came in hard cases that have been preserved well over time (and that have a mostly-uniform look that shows well on a shelf), and it has a fun variety of genres (while the PCE might be shooter heavy, the SMS has good games for virtually every game type). The other great thing about the SMS is that the good games are relatively inexpensive, while the bad ones usually command the most (Smurfs 2, James Buster Douglas Boxing, Great Ice Hockey). On the NES it's the opposite - the good games everyone wants are often expensive, like the Mega Man or Dragon Warrior games, or for guys like us, Bonk's Adventure. Add in all the fun options like the dual formats, light gun games, paddle controller, 3D glasses, etc. and it's just such a charming little system.
