Title: Youkai Douchuuki Thread
Post by: lukester on October 17, 2015, 01:59:53 PM
Youkai Douchuuki is generally known as that really cheap HuCard thrown in random game lots, along with other Namco games Genpei Toumaden and Wonder Momo.

Unlike those other two games, Youkai Douchuuki doesn't suck. It's a very fun action-adventure game that you can blow through in 15 minutes.

I'm not gonna give many tips, but I will say buy the bottle that costs 2000 gold. It helps you jump farther and run faster. Also only buy the first ki upgrade.

If you can reach the fairy fountain in stage 2, you can earn an extra life!

Use this guide for help, there's a PCE walkthrough in here too.

It's also one of the most rare and expensive HuCards.

Probably the most responsive platformer on the system.

I like this game, I've gotten pretty far but never beat it.

I thought my copy had stopped working.  Tried loading it on my Duo and only showed a black screen.  It seems this game doesn't load up when a multi tap (wireless receiver) is plugged in.

I beat Wonder Momo a few years ago, probably around 2008. It was my first PCE Hu-Card next to Hyper Lode Runner. It's not amazing, but it is a "fun" game. The last few levels have a clusterf*ck of sprites. It will drive you mad. But when you beat it, you'll be pretty stoked.

Same. Damn thing had me so flummoxed. I usually play everything with my multi tap plugged in just to use it as a (very small) extension cable, since the controller cables are so ridiculously short.

Never managed to get very far in Youkai Douchuuki. I should give it a more serious attempt sometime.

I think this was the game that sold me on the pc engine moreso than r-type. Something about the graphics for it's time of a bug eyed cute character roaming through haunted woods mix with the spirit world  along with buddhist themes.  Fell in love with the art style.  Those floating fire heads tho...

The sequel is pretty good but I'm not fond of the original.

Me too. Great music!

On topic: YD also has great music.

Off topic: Wonder Momo's music is not that great.

That is all.

Managed to get the best ending!

This means not touching any money and not killing any enemies in the last level.

If it wasn't for this game and hearing about it in the early 2000s I would have never learned about the pc engine.  It was the game that really made me appreciate what the pc engine is also about.  The great colors, gameplay, games that could be put on cards, and overall a fantastic system that I wish I would have learned when I was a kid and not a teenager :)

also I really liked genpei toumaden as well, even though it was quite brutal.  Wonder Momo though while not the best, but not the worst either.

I also want to point out that this game just remains blank and does not boot up if you have a multi tap on your pce.  I can also confirm that the same thing happens when you have a wireless multi tap connected.

This thread has inspired me to take the plunge and pick up the game. The fact that it's so cheap makes it easier to commit.  :-({|=

Stylistically it reminds me a lot of Jigoku Meguri, though Meguri feels much more polished. There's a charm here though. i have to commit to memorizing the tips in this thread in order to get to some of those secret stages/caches of loot.

Does anyone know what the cat asks you?

if I can recall correctly if you have some food that you bought early on from a random vendor (they kind of bounce onto the screen) you have the option to give it to feed the animal who will travel with you for a little while and take down some of those enemies before disappearing.
