Title: R-Type Complete CD, anyway to add the chip music back in?
Post by: Dicer on October 20, 2015, 05:39:22 PM
Seems people love to hate on the CD music, I happen to like it, but is such a thing possible?

Record the chip tunes from a sound rip rom playing on a TED.

Edit the tracks to match the length of the R-Type Complete CD bgm tracks.

Replace the tracks of an iso/wav rip and burn to disc.

*Bonus: make a dub for the cinemas, the cheezier the better.

Since the cinemas are a bad joke, why not just play the TurboGrafx-16 version of R-Type instead and not deal with load times?

I like R-type Complete, "bad" cinemas and music....I was just wondering if it was feasible.

That's a good idea actually haha. I know that R-Type I + II were hacked on that Super HuCard disc to run out of PCE memory, someone could just do a disc with the two games in it.

With the hacking skills of people like Bonknuts, elmer, and Nightwolve, I've little doubt that it's possible, but the easy answer is "play the huey".

Yeah, if you like the original chip tunes than just play the hucard version. But if you want an alt sound track, just replace the wave files with whatever you want. Maybe arcade FM music? Maybe a hybrid mix of FM and the PCE chiptune? The Spice Girls Rtype mash-up? The possibilities are endless.

Though one word of caution, some games use different ways of playing CD audio. Some use track #'s and some (for whatever stupid reason) use direct sector offsets at the start of the track. If it's the latter method, then you absolutely need to make sure the wav files (or time) exactly matches the originals. If it's the first method, then it doesn't matter.

Putting the arcade R-Type II tunes into it would be interesting perhaps. Hmm.

Arcade R-Type's music is just passable, but R-Type II's tunes are just awful.  IREM were still in their "buzzsaw in a drainpipe" phase.

At least use songs from Super R-Type or R-Type Leo if you want something excellent to listen to.

Super R Type had awesome music, that would be great on R Type complete.

This gives me an idea...

"Reaches for Star Parodier & Katy Perry CD"

I really like the soundtrack to R-Type 2. Both manic and atmospheric in places.

That... that could actually work.

I had the idea of trying this with Super Raiden a couple years ago, replacing the CD tunes with arcade versions...never got around to trying it, though.

I guess I'm weird, but I don't really care for the chiptunes, yet love the CD audio.  I was actually trying to find some rips of a few tracks online, to no avail.   I love the first stage's "R-R-R-R-R-R-Type."  The fourth stage music is pretty great too.  I guess because I never played it in the arcade or via any other ports, I just have a higher tolerance for it.

I did some hacking work with Super Raiden a few years ago.

I added these options. I was able to fit two sound tracks on the disc, and the boot menu you could choose between them, as well as higher res mode, difficulty modes (include one that's harder than the PCE one, and two easy modes for not-so-hardcore shmups fans), allow skipping of the new stages (classic mode), and respawn option. I ran out of ram in the main game for respawn to work correctly, so that's why the project was halted. When TED v2.4 comes out, I'll make a compatible version for that and finally get the respawn coding bug free. It's not seen here, but there was also an option to choose which ship color to use as well.

AHHHHH That's awesome!!  Exactly what I had in mind, only chock full of bells & whistles.  Can't wait to see it finished, man. :)
