Title: Any Atomiswave Fans Out There?
Post by: Elder on October 24, 2015, 04:48:02 PM
The topic says it all.  OK, I know this sub forum is supposed to be for non-NEC consoles, and yes technically the Atomiswave is an arcade platform, but long story short I am now in possession of a second Atomiswave motherboard and am trying to see if the community would appreciate a raffle of an Atomiswave board.  I still have some testing to do before I can officially give it away, but it's looking good right now.

So back to the topic at hand, any Atomiswave fans out there?  Any arcade hardware fans out there?  Personally I'm a very big arcade fan.  Having grown up through the 80's, I lived and breathed arcades.  From the classics to the twilight of arcades, I've been there and loved every minute.  Currently I'm working my way through CPS-II games, MVS and PGM games, but today I wanted to talk a bit about the Atomiswave.

That's my current run of Atomiswave games.  As you can see I've got myself all five of the SNK-produced game, and well that should come as no surprise since I'm a huge SNK fan ;)  Today I play these games via my SuperGun that James from Jamma-Nation X made for me.  That thing is bloody awesome.  Anyways, some of my favorite games on the system include Dolphin Blue, Slug 6, and Knights of Valour.  I absolutely love the VGA output this thing has.  I can't tell you how many hours of fun I've had with friends playing Dolphin Blue and blowing them away with how sharp the game looks in 480p.  It's a real shame that game hasn't been ported elsewhere as it really is a blast to play.

So anyone else into the system?  Anyone care to share some memories?

I was a fan of the unit and almost bought into it after the Neo Geo was discontinued so I could pop it into my MVS Cab.  Ive only played Metal Slug 6 and KOFXI.  Great system.  Is yours consolized?

In the early 2000s, I used to play games at my local arcade, Animation Town, almost every weekend.  Just about as soon as it was out they got a copy of The Rumble Fish.  I'd play it a few games whenever I went down there and would generally have nobody to play it with.  The owner was a pretty cool guy and would play whatever game you were playing if nobody was playing with you.  If he won a match he'd even put more tokens in the machine for you.  He was just about the only guy who ever played Rumble Fish with me.

I liked the game well enough and a year or so later I asked the owner if he was going to buy the sequel.  He responded something along the lines of "If anyone else asked I'd slap them."  I always wanted to play the second Rumble Fish game but it never got a port anywhere.

Anyway, I always thought Atomiswave was pretty cool.  Heh, I haven't thought about one in a while.  Maybe I'll pick one up at some point so that I can finally get around to playing Rumble Fish 2.

I love the Fist of the North Star/Hokuto No Ken fighting game. It's pure fan service all the way, with the finishing moves, background details, etc. I had dreamt of an HnK fighting game like that for years and when it finally came out, it far exceeded even what I had imagined. A definite must for any HnK fan.

I always found the Atomiswave to be pretty ''meh''.  Some fun can be had with it, but not enough to be worth owning imo.  As for games, I'd say Rumble Fish 2 is the most interesting one.

Call you lame?!?  Guilty Gear X is fantastic.  I've never been able to find 1.5 for a good price.  People are asking insane prices for it.

I was a fan of the unit and almost bought into it after the Neo Geo was discontinued so I could pop it into my MVS Cab.  Ive only played Metal Slug 6 and KOFXI.  Great system.  Is yours consolized?

Nope both of my mobos aren't consolized.  I have a SuperGun if I want to connect it to my home entertainment system.  I bought into it like you said, right after the discontinuation of the MVS.  I don't regret it either as I scored it for a good price back in the day, and have most of the games I wanted for it.

There are five games I still want to pick up, The Rumble Fish, The Rumble Fish 2, Guilty Gear Version 1.5, Guilty Gear Isuka, and Fist of the North Star.  I know Isuka isn't that great, but I have a few friends who really enjoyed it.

I wouldn't say this was my favorite arcade platform ever, not by a long-shot, but I did enjoy what I played on it.  It's a shame it was so short-lived.

Indeed!  I've been looking for a decently priced copy for some time now.

Yeah it's certainly no MVS, but I always found it an interesting side-note for SNK fans.  I also am a huge fan of Dolphin Blue.  The Rumble Fish are two games that have been exceedingly challenging to find, but maybe one day.  I've played them both before, and they're certainly unique.

I've got a consolized AW and about 5 games, I love the thing. Fist of the North Star is everything I love about fighting games, and Dolphin Blue is awesome. The system's worth keeping around for just those two.

I've actually been kinda wanting one. Hokuto no Ken is mainly why.

I like samsho6 plenty, and always wanted to get into HnK, unfortunately my atomiswave's motherboard is pretty much scuppered :(

I had one and most the games for a while. Got kind of tired with it and the games don't look too good in my low res candy cabs. Also that fan is so loud!

Fully agree.  I would argue that Dolphin Blue is enough to reason to purchase an Atomiswave.  I don't know why, but I just adore that game, and it hasn't been ported anywhere else, which sucks because more people need to experience it.  It's especially awesome in VGA mode.

I've been on the hunt for that one for a while, but haven't had a chance to pick it up yet.

That's why I'm going over mine right now to determine if I raffle off the second one I just got, or keep it 'just in case.'

Yes that fan is DAMN loud, but it certainly looks nice with the right setup.

I dunno punk, I don't have a candy but they look nice on my pvm. FotNS and Dolphin Blue are RIDICULOUS on a 480p crt though.

I had a AW mobo and a few games(Fist, NGBC and Valour) a while back but ended up selling like Punkic did. I do still borrow one for cons to run FotNS, Rumble fish 2 and sometimes Dolphin Blue. It's definitely much better to run on a Hi-rez cab. But I have no interest is owning one again.

I had a mobo and was planning on getting Dolphin Blue for it, but after I had a chance to actually play it in Japan, I was pretty disappointed with it and ended up selling the mobo off. I feel like the platform could have had a chance but it just came out too late.

I was thinking of getting one for HnK. Love that game, and Arc did an amazing job with it (why can't this be done with a DBZ game) Anyway, a buddy of mine may have one in a storage unit he is willing to sell to me, hopefully i find out soon. I just got myself a vega jr. control box (supergun) So i'm going to be diving into a lot of arcade stuff.

Awesome, have fun.  The only thing I dislike with arcade games is the bloody size haha.  Even if you don't have cabs, the PCBs take up SO much room.  If you start to get into CPS-II games, good luck!  I have around a dozen or so and I have boxes everywhere.

There aren't many games for it, but Dolphin Blue is pretty rad. Fist of the North Star is on PS2, as long as you don't mind glacial load times sucking up about 1/5 of your matches. They did an amazing job of bringing the feel of the series into a video game.

I enjoyed Demolish Fist quite a bit.
