Title: Your 5 favorite PC Engine games?
Post by: mj9123456 on November 13, 2015, 11:53:24 AM
What are your 5 favorite games for the system? CD, HuCards, ranked, unranked -- however you feel like answering the question. I'm fairly new to the library, and I'd love to hear what all you PC Engine experts/devotees have at the top of your lists. Thanks.

XZR for Mega Drive may have less cut content and less censorship, but there is still a dramatic overall difference between the Turbo/PCE and Sega versions of Exile.

Apart from the cutscenes, redbook audio and translation, both have almost identical gameplay and graphics. Exile on Genesis is slightly darker. I've played through both versions.

A very minor difference is that the genesis version has a warp spell, while the pce version refills health and magic when you level up. The genesis version also has autofire for attacking, while on pce you have to turn on the turbo switch.

It doesn't matter which version you play as the differences are mostly superficial. I only prefer the Turbo version slightly.

I have not really played many if any PC Engine games from Japan. However out of the US released games my favs are.

Neutopia 1 & 2
Dungeon Explorer 1 & 2
Super Star Soldier
Gate Of Thunder
Y's Book 1 & 2

Eh, maybe that's eight games but I do enjoy them all. There are a few others I like to pick up and play from time to time and they are Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes and Cosmic Fantasy 2. I really enjoy the old school style RPG's or dungeon crawlers like Theron's Quest.

There's a lot more games that I like but these are the five that excited me the most and always make me come back for more.

I'm not going to fill up this thread with a lengthy breakdown of all the differences, which have been discussed in the past. But the gameplay isn't identical, the Genesis and Mega Drive visuals (when the artwork isn't altered) take a big hit in most places and are not simply "darker", the warp spell is in the PCE version, Genesis version is missing at least one section and is heavily censored, the Japanese versions have various differences, etc. By 16-bit console game standards, the difference is far greater than most games which fuel long discussions in SNES/Genesis comparisons.

It's a fun game on all four versions and worth playing through each if you appreciate differences in games.

Funny you'd say that, as I was going to have Exile as one of my five games.  Is the MD/Genesis version still worth playing?

Anyway...five games:

Exile

Dungeon Explorer II

Soldier Blade

Gomola Speed

Genji Tsuushin Agedama

These aren't necessarily my absolute favorite PCE games...but at the moment, if I could only pick 5 to play forever, these would be it.

Yes, Exile is an amazing game. It's much more fun than many similar games and all four 16-bit versions look great, the Turbo and PCE versions are just dramatically better in most places when it comes to color, shading and color cycling effects. The Sega versions are worth experiencing for the sound alone. I recommend playing through the Genesis then Mega Drive versions back-to-back (on a flashcart if you have to) to appreciate all of the changes. Turbo or PCE version played shortly before the MD version is the best way to appreciate the difference in those games, as you'll be used to the better graphics first. After yo've cleared any version once, it's easy to quickly blaze through the rest.

The games are cheap enough (and I'm a big enough fan) for me to eventually get both the Genesis & MD versions.  I'd also like to get the PCE version, to compare with the turbob.
