Title: Bonk 3 Music Hack?
Post by: lukester on December 15, 2015, 10:53:26 AM
I'm not a hacker, just kinda wondering.

I think most Bonk fans agree that Bonk 3's main flaw is the music. Only one song is a real stand-out, and that is the colosseum/final boss theme. How feasible would it be to replace the music with tracks from the other games, at least Bonk's Revenge? And would someone be willing to do it?

A quick check shows:

Bonk 1 uses RAM $Cx-$Dx, $3Exx-$3Fxx
Bonk 2 uses RAM $Fx, $37xx
Bonk 3 uses RAM $Fx, $34xx-$37xx

for music code.  And Bonk 3 uses RAM after $37xx for in-game stuff.  So feasibly only Bonk 2 would fit and mmmaybe not bother Bonk 3's ingame RAM.

Another option is just replacing Bonk 3 CD's redbook audio with something more pleasing.

It's also the sound effects that suck in Bonk 3 IMO.  The sound engine just sucks in general.  I've thought about making my own version of the redbook of the Bonk 3 CD, to make the songs sound more like Bonks 1 & 2.  I just don't have time, with me working on Mega Man.  I was working on a different Bonk project, but that's still something I'd like to keep under wraps for now.

Since Bonk 1 and 2 are on the 3-in-1 CD, it might be easier to hack those to play CD tracks in place of the chip tones.

My vote was no.  The tunes aren't that bad.

..... poor Bonk 3, gettin' all the hatters.  :|

Bonk 3's chip tunes are fine. Not what I wanted, but there are way too many other games deserving of chiptune replacement.

The best possible chiptune transplant from one existing game to another would be putting the Somer Assault tunes into New Adventure Island. Instead of bgms that work against the flow/pacing/mood of the game, NAI with SA music would become exciting and fun and a much better and much more of a real Wonderboy game.

No music can change the fact it's the worst obey version of Bonk...

Would be rad to play Bonk 3 cd with 90s hip hop instrumentals in place of the og tunes.

Huh? Huh?

Yeah, as far as the tunes themselves are, I like them in general, but really feel like they'd pop with the original sound engine from 1 & 2.  I really don't like 3's sound engine, at least not for a Bonk game, maybe it'd be ok for some other game?  And the sound effects suck, at least comparatively to 1 & 2.  It's possible that if 1 & 2 had already been using 3's engine, I would've been conditioned to that sound engine, & wouldn't have a real problem with it.

Well, putting new music in Bonk 3 could be a way to get into making PCE chip tunes. We could stand to have more musicians about.
