Title: Super CD Rom2 Release Date?
Post by: Its_Sam on January 07, 2016, 03:08:54 AM
I'm making a video about the PC Engine Super CD Rom2 because it's rather hard to find a video with reliable information on it, but I've hit a couple of dead ends. I cannot for the life of me find a release date. I would also like to know the original retail price. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

¥47800

Is that right? Seems very cheap. When TurboCD came out, it was $400 and the price you mentioned is between $45 and $50.

The exchange rate in Dec. '91 was about 126 yen to the dollar, so that would've been about $380.

Also, I heard that it's supposed to be pronounced "Super CD Rom Rom" rather than "Super CD Rom Two", is that correct?

More or less.  It's CD-ROM2 (squared) which mathematically is equal to CD-ROM [times] ROM.

I'll just say, "CD Rom Squared" then, saying, "Rom Rom" sounds kind of silly. Thanks

I think most people say out loud "C-D-2" or CD-Rom-Two", but the Super CD-ROM2 hardware is generally refered to as the "Super CD-ROM".

The whole "rom-rom" thing isn't just a technical term appearing here and there, a piece of PCE hardware is titled the "ROM ROM Amp".

I think Cdrom squared sounds even more stupid.... every says 'cdrom two' so personally that is what I would go with.

Personally, I just ignore the 2 altogether most of the time; if it's something written and more formal than the usual interwebz post, I'll include it, but never spoken aloud.  If you say CD / SuperCD / Arcade CD, people will know what you mean.

I did a bit of a hack job on one of the ads, but you might want to use these interesting examples of cherub-centric marketing.

I don't remember the details but the whole "ROM ROM" thing is somehow based on a pun or popular children's nickname, made to make the little IFU system seem like your pal. Something like that anyway...Therefore, "ROM ROM" is the correct pronunciation but I think most people just say "CD" in virtually all situations.

I've wondered about that too. Do the Japanese say "CD-ROM ROM" too? What did TTi use? Squared is probably more correct but yeah it feels awkward to say.

Coming from Sega CD land, it's a bit confusing seeing the acronym "SCD" being used.

If you want to hear how the Japanese say CD2 and SCD, just stick one (games disc, not person of Japanese descent) in a CD player.

So I think I'll actually just say "Super CD" as suggested, but make a comment about the alternate pronunciations. Also, thanks for showing the ad, it really is quite... special.

I love those damn ads. So creative and interesting, unlike the generic tripe we often saw back then (in North America).
