Title: Ripping and writing Turbo CD titles - Help
Post by: spawnshop on January 17, 2016, 11:38:45 AM
Hi everyone, please forgive me if this is noob topic....

I've recently picked up a working Turbo CD system and would like to rip and write some games.   I know the system plays burned copies because the seller demoed my system playing a burned disc of Castlevania and Bonk 3.   He did say there might be a specific CD-r brand and a certain way to write it.

So a member on here was gracious enough to give me some advice, but I am still coming up with negative results.    I have a few .cue files, and I tried burning them to CD-r with both Nero and Imgburn, but the disc will not read in my TurboCD system.
And when i rip it with TurboRip, it creates a folder with all the .wav files.   Did it unpack the original .cue somehow?

Any tips on how to write these disks would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Your system is just being picky, as most Duos are.  Do yourself  a favor, dont play burns in it if you want it to keep working.

Hey Bernie,

I don't think it's a DUO.  I think he has the Turbo CD attachment.  In my experience those are more finicky than DUOs.  My DUO plays everything I toss at it.  My Turbo CD is another story.

Do you have the 3.0 system card?

I have a 3.0 PCE system card and a 2.o TG16 card.
I still need to get the region adapter to use the 3.0 card, or region mod the system.
I rather get the adapter though.

If you use cheap media...and fast burn speeds...its not going to work

TurboRip makes its own cue file.  It describes the layout of the disc's files; it's not an actual file on the original disc.

For burning, I use ImgBurn and burn to Taiyo Yudens at the slowest speed supported by the drive and media.  You may have to try many different media before you find one your system likes, your drive might need adjustment or recapping (it may have been on its last legs when the seller demo'd it), or it might be like my TurboDuo which quit playing CDRs a decade ago.

There is definitely an issue here.  You only have the 2.0 card functioning at this time.  This means you can't play Drac X, Bonk 3, or any other Super CD title even if you burn it properly.

You need to burn some regular CD titles and see if they work.  Ys 1&2 come to mind.  Maybe Monster Lair.  Google a list of regular 2.0 CD titles and burn some of them.

Ys IV English Translated is a Super CD Rom game.  That's why it will not run in your set up.

Yarr, burned (or real) Super CDs ain't ever going to work with your current setup.

It sounds like the seller pulled one over on you too if he was demoing the system with Drac X and Bonk 3 when he sold it to you.  He didn't explain to you that you couldn't run those without the 3.0 card?

Its gonna cost you $100 or more for a region card adapter.  Better off just getting it modded from someone on this site.

$100+ is high.  The PC-Henshin is $65, but I'd personally rather have a region mod for similar cost.

Or just buy a Turbo EverDrive v2, run the patched System Card 3 image on it and play all those SCD games ... and the entire HuCard library without a region-mod.

Is it fixed to work with TGCD yet?  I still haven't had mine replaced...

I'm not 100% sure, because I haven't seen a report from a TGCD owner ... but the latest version 2.4 (or 2.3) is supposed to have fixed all the problems.

My version 2.3 replacement card certainly fixed the problems that I was having with a Core Grafx II & SuperCDROM.

IMHO, it's well worth sending it back for the fix.

Even better if a couple of folks get together to send back more than one card and share the expensive international shipping.

Hey Spawnshop,

Try some 2.0 CD copies and let us know how they work.

Hey Spawnshop,

Try some 2.0 CD copies and let us know how they work.

OK.
So the 2.0 is "CD" and the 3.0 is "Super CD", right?

You got it.  Any of the early CD title are 2.0.  Examples would be Fighting Street, Monster Lair, Ys I&II, etc.

Ok, so my Turbo CD & Duo are both acting up, & I recently discovered the magic of hacking a Wii.  However, WiiMednafen only seems to work with bin files.  However, I can't seem to make any.  Any version of CDRWin I get, doesn't seem to work, I've been Googling like crazy looking for other programs that do bin files(most don't).  I can rip most cd games that are Japanese with TurboRip(most US games aren't ripping for some reason), but it's in the ISO/WAV format, & I don't see a way to rip them in BIN format, so, I'm stuck & pulling my hair out.  I thought it would be easy peasey to just rip my games & play em' on my Wii....such is not the case......  Can anyone else a brother out?

Just because I'm curious....
Have you tried just using a turbo cd?

Forget the Wii.  Play on original hardware.

Send it out to Keith Courage for repair.  He can fix anything.

I may have to do that someday.  My Duo has the usual problem where the lens gets stuck.  My Turbo, can't figure out what the deal is, maybe some loose wiring?  I don't dare open it up, & send it in the mail does kinda scare me.  Probably mostly cuz it's my original, it's, more or less, my baby from my early teens...

Back on topic....
I meant, Have you tried a turbo cd in the wii ?
I modded mine to test some game on, and I don't remember having to rip a cd....
Maybe it will work?

No I haven't, totally havent' thought about that!  I didn't recall seeing anything about playing actual discs on the Wii when doing the modding.

I don't think that will work.  Will the Wii even read CDs?

I got this working once. I think I used an old version of cdrwin (on win98 through emulation). It output an ISO. I simply renamed the .iso to .bin and I think that was all that was needed to get it to work on the Wii.

Post by: ParanoiaDragon on October 24, 2016, 07:14:53 PM
Yeah, playing cd's definitely didn't work.  I did see that one of the emulator's can play dvd's, so I thought maybe I could put all the cd games on a dvd....but then I saw how few of those games could fit on 1 dvd.  It'd probably take 30 dvd's to put all my Turbo cd's on there.

As for renaming an ISO to a BIN, if I did that, how would I include the WAV files that go with the ISO?  I could maybe do that with Addams family, & 1 or 2 others, where there's no redbook audio, but most have redbook.

I still haven't been able to find an old CDRWin that'll work, usually says something about missing ASPI drivers, even though they were loaded when I installed it.  So it doesn't find any kind of CD/DVD drive to use.

The old cdrwin (think it was cdrwin) burns the whole CD to a single complete ISO.  So you end up with one large ISO and a CUE file. I think it only ran on Win98 though so I had to set up a VM run it or I would get aspi driver errors.
