Title: MGC 2016: Interest Check - NULLEXPRESS Passengers Wanted
Post by: nullity on January 18, 2016, 05:29:01 AM
In this thread, let us discuss and compare our traveling plans for the upcoming Midwest Gaming Classic... specifically, who is driving, where they are driving from, and who/what they might be willing to take with them.

I am hoping to attend this year, but could really use a carpool or room share to make it more doable. Surely i can't be the only one looking to cut costs!

I am in southeast KS and would be willing to drive. I have some TVs to take, but could cut back on how many i take to make room for road trip bros. Alternately, i would be a willing hitchhicker if anyone is already planning a drive through my neck of the woods.

Stop trying to spark a debate. I cannot attend, and your festivities will somehow have to cope without gredleresque pass times; whatever that may or may not imply. Pussy.

Living in Wisconsin about 40 minutes away from the convention I can pretty much guarantee I'll be there.
Missed last year due to work but changed jobs so I now have more flexibility in my schedule and can easily get the weekend off.

Flights out on Newark, NJ aren't that expensive but this event really snuck up on me. I'd love to go, a bunch of people I know will be there. Looks like I have maybe a week or two max to really lock in plans though.

Any idea what kind of classic game tournaments will be happening? Main site has nothing as far as I see.

This is the one thing every year that I clear all plans / cancel work immediately for. It's 3 days of pure no-bullshit retrogaming. Nothing else like it.

A bunch of the PCEFX crew, including yours truly, works with the museum area (which is a hotel conference space full of classic consoles/computers, all available for play), and Josh & crew hold down a dedicated room just for Turbo. All that plus arcade/pinball and a gargantuan vending space (30,000+ SQFT) mean you need to cancel whatever the f*ck you're doing that weekend and roll up to Milwaukee.

As an added bonus - Eugene Jarvis will be attending this year, and Retronauts will be recording an episode live on Saturday.

I have no idea who eugene jarvis is but i am excited to share the joy of DoxPhile with his fanbase. :D

Nullity is full of shit and knows full well who Eugene Jarvis is, but for you youngin' folk - he's the guy who programmed Defender and Robotron: 2084, and also had a strong hand in NARC, Smash TV and Cruisin' USA. Need not say more.

Sorry I'm going to miss that.  I would get a kick out of watching Bob Mackie read Wikipedia articles and comment on gameplay based on YouTube videos in person.  That show sucks majestically.

I think my chances for going this year are looking reallllly good! I'll only be going Saturday but I'll probably be in the Turbo room with you guys for a majority of the time. If any extra controllers/consoles/games need to be brought I'd be more than willing to do so, though I'm sure it's all covered.

Will there be a LaserActive in the house? I tried DragonmasterDan's awhile back and I'd love to play it again!

We cut it from the museum this year (typically we run it with with Road Prosecutor, Triad Stone or Pyramid Patrol) because A.) it's a pain in the ass to transport/setup and B.) it collects dust all weekend - literally had like 2 or 3 people play it last year the whole weekend.

Not having Beemer there hurts also - that man's got quite the LD-ROM collection.

Our ghetto-rigged Planet Harriers setup will be making a comeback, though!

What a damn shame! Triad Stone and Road Prosecutor are so much fun to play though!

Didn't know BMW wasn't going either, it may be earlier in this thread but still.

Also Planet Harriers looks cool too so I'll be playing that!!

I am stopping in Chicago on the way up and catching White Sox opening day on Friday.  I just saw the high is 40 degrees on Friday, which I wasn't expecting when I booked a few weeks ago.  I thought that the midwest was supposed to be warm and summery, so much for my tropical vacation plans to escape wintery Bufaflo, NY.

HA! I too am catching the Sox home opener. Looks like we have very similar weekend plans. Where are your seats? 40 degrees is going to suck for a baseball game

I haven't bought my tickets yet, I am betting on Stubhub getting cheaper as the forecast solidifies as freezing.  I am going with two friends that have very little interest in spending money, so they will probably force me into crappy seats.

I have gone to a few Cleveland Indians and Buffalo Bisons openers which have been similar or colder weather, but I don't know why.

Yup...we got lucky the past few years with having warm(ish) weather around MGC time. I think last year it was 60's or 70's. This year it's looking like it could be sub-40 degrees during the weekend. Hell, it snowed 3 inches this past Saturday.

If you're coming from warmer weather states, make sure you pack a decent jacket for the weekend. The forecast could change at the drop of a hat but assume the worst.

As of right now...

Saturday - high of 37, low of 29
Sunday - high of 49, low of 40

Last year it hit the 60's or so, by comparison. Never super warm this time of year but this is a little chilly even for us. Bundle up!

Wisconsin is supposed to get nailed with a good blizzard this weekend.  Because of this I left the snow gear on the car I'm driving.
