Title: Dungeon Explorer and multitap
Post by: Digi.k on September 02, 2006, 01:38:44 PM
I got that 3 player multi-tap for my pc engine and... I was hoping to upload some videos of some multi player co-op of dungeon explorer... but looks like DE is incompatible with the 3 player multi-tap..

One player (in any joypad port) works fine but 2nd player just dont work at all...

Does it look like I need to get the 5 player tap??  or is there something I'm missing.. because all the other multi player games work fine with it except Dungeon Explorer..

I don't have any experience with the 3-player tap :(

If I recall correctly, you hold down the Select or Run (?) button for a multiplayer game in DE. What happens when you attempt to do this?

did you try what stevek suggested?

in the first room screen (after the map screen at the start) you need to press and hold RUN button to choose number of players - i think it then counts up from 1 - 2 - 3 etc as you have to choose the number of players - then release the run button.

pardon my offtopicness, but why would anyone want a multitap with less than 5 plugs?

me!  Because I only have 2 joypads and its what I got bundled when I bought my PC Engine.  (Everything you see in that picture of the pc engine (boxed and instructions), the AV booster the 3 player multi-tap and two joypads were bundled in a deal from ebay for under $48 USD BIN from hit-japan.

Yea the room where you all start in at the bar.. tried holding down run and select but nothing happens in the 2nd joypad.

do you have other multiplayer games to test it with? it could just be a defective tap.

I think you have to hold down RUN on the first controller only until it reaches the desired number.  Is that what you are doing?

right when I do this pressing RUN brings up the display of PASSWORD, STATUS and LEVEL

Pressing SELECT button changes between Black and White magic

Used to play DE in multiplayer years ago with no problem but that was with the 5 player adaptor..
might look as though I need to buy a 5 player one again.. which isnt' what I really want but oh wells...

you  should hunt them both..

I've only had the first game..  but the 2nd one.. if you hunt for the USA version that would probably cost you a bit and quite rare..  apart from that all I can assume is that the 2nd one is just the same although bigger, CD music tracks and animated cut scenes.

You could probably play through the Japanese version of DEII just fine, especially if there are any walkthroughs for it.

Dungeon Explorer II is much better than the first one, and I say that as a fan of the first one.  The quest is much longer, there are way more bosses and characters, the story and cinemas rule, and the soundtrack is ridiculously good.  Personally, I'd say go for the US version because you won't get to experience the true awesomeness of the villain if you can't understand what he's saying.  But if it costs too much these days, then yeah, go for the JP one.

Digi.K,

try starting a new game, because I'm pretty sure the first thing that the game does is ask you to define how many players with the select button; [i believe it appears very quickly in the left most dialogue box] if you dont do it right from the beginning, i dont think you can just add players in once you are already walking around the tavern.

no it doesn't appear at all..

I've only got the japanese HuCARD.

I can only select the character and password. theres nothing else to appear that allows me to select.

Also, if you don't play the U.S. version, you'll miss the true femmasexuality of the the villian. He makes the WD Ghaleon sound like Mr T.  :)

There's no reason not to buy both DE & DEII since they're both cheap and are two of the very best PCE/Turbo games around. If you play through the JP version of DEII and decide that a solid dub and translated text is worth it for you, then buy the U.S. version.

As for starting multiplayer in DE, the way I remember it(to tired to set it up) is that when it asks "how many players?", everyone has to push and hold their RUN button and keep holding it until everyone who's going to play is doing it and then everyone can let go.
