Title: Turbo CD Recommendations
Post by: DQ187 on March 24, 2016, 08:16:04 AM
I'm looking for some good recommendations for Turbo CD. I only have Spriggan at the moment. I have a few in mind I'd like to get like the Ys games and Castlevania but not sure where to go after that. I'm into Shooters and Platformers.

Thanks for the recommendation! I actually have that for Sega CD. I've heard the Turbo version is better tho. Is it worth trying to pick up if I already have the other version or are the differences not very big.

Get Gate of Thunder instead.

Then Shubibinman 3 for PCE.

Then Exile.

Those three shouldn't break the bank & provide an excellent starting point to what the console has to offer.

You want Turbo Lords. The Sega version is a lie.

I also recommend Gate of Thunder, less flamboyant but better as a game than Lords.

Do you have the ability to play Super CDs?

What kinds of games do you like and do not like to play?

What is your tolerance of language barrier?

I dont. Just have regular Turbo with CD attachment. No 3.0 card. Planning on getting either a Turbo Duo or Duo RX at some point when I can find a good deal.  I like Shooters and Platformers. Rpgs also but I still have quite a few I need to play so I'd rather not pick up any more right now. I don't mind language, not easily offended.

You can't play Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder or Shubibiman 3 (which I don't recommend anyway).

Here are some cool CD2 games:

Spriggan
Macross 2036
Rainbow Islands
Download 2
Valis III
Super Darius
Sidearms Special
Monster Lair
Exile
Rayxanber II
Auleria
Record of Lodoss War
Splash Lake
Ys I & II
Ys III
Tengai Makyou ZIRIA
Lords of the Rising Sun
Vasteel

What about Shubibinman 3 isn't recommendable other than the low difficulty?  I'd take it over any of the Valis games.

While I enjoyed Shubibinman 3 on a certain level, there is something underwhelming about being brought from one setpiece to another, only to have each encounter end in seconds (sometimes before the badguy is even done speaking). I am not convinced they even tested the game for balance, or rather were worried that people wouldn't get through the (very short) game without a real difficulty crutch. It gives the game a short shelf-life. Off-topic, but I'd say stay away from the two other PC-Engine entries. 3 is the best because it's playable, stylish, and can be fun; the other two are horrid.

Shubibinman 1 sucks, but the 2nd is worth playing. I prefer it over 3 since it has more polish, amazing music and it's a fun mega man clone.

Use my thread for hints. The only stage that still ever gives me hiccups is the last level due to a mini boss.

I think Shockman is better than mega man 1 and 5, but doesn't hold a candle to the other nes games

Puzzle.

It is an action puzzle game though.  It's like $20 so you should get it because there isn't a game cheaper and it is a ton of fun.

No!!!!!!

Even Valis II, which is easy and short, is certainly more competent and enjoyable than Shubibinman 1 (and, I'd argue, Shibibinman 3).

For all its *average* platforming/mechanics, Valis II creates a fantastic atmosphere and experience. Even if you skip the cinemas on subsequent playthroughs (which most folks do, I reckon), the atmosphere and disjointed story are still with you.

At least Shubibinman is better than Bravoman. I can't stand Bravoman.

The biggest crime of the cosmos is that it would have only required a few tweaks to transform Shibibinman 3 into a real, genuine gem.

Shit...I also like bravoman as well.

Enough to have played through it 3 times. It's an hour long game at least.

If nothing else, the boss variety is great and the graphics are solid. The translation is 10/10 as well. And the credits are legit great.

Games I don't like are Keith courage, jj and jeff and valis 2

Damn, I can't tell if you are teasing me, because I like JJ&Jeff! Of course, it's because JJ&JEFF = bastard child of Wonderboy1, and I am obsessed with Wonderboy1. Like...desperate.

:)

I actually enjoy the core mechanics of Keith Courage...it just becomes too boring/tedious doing the same thing over and over. Had there been more variety/creativity in level design, obstacles, and enemy AI...Keith could have been an absolute Top 10 game. I totally love alternating between over world/underworld...and jumping around and slashing Nova suit mecha = awesome.

I enjoy Keith Courage & Bravoman as well. Simple but enjoyable. Keith definitely becomes a little repetitive and tedious but  lthe Nova suit is cool! :P havnt played JJ & Jeff but have been wanting to check it out.

Shubibiman 3 feels like a beta version of a game that was never completed. It is unpolished and inconsistent. I haven't played it in years because it was so underwhelming, but I remember that it seemed like even the sound wasn't fully implemented. Even taking what's there for what it is, the first time I played through I got to an early boss which was kinda lame (as was the previous one) and I was thinking to myself, "things have got to start improving for the rest of the game". Then the following cinema was painfully long and I wondered if the next stage could possibly redeem this endurance test. Then the freaking credits began to play. The game was actually over just as it was getting going. The brief disappointing content really was an early prototype and what's there would feel like half a game at most if it were a HuCard. It's easy because they never fleshed the miniscule content out enough to balance it.  The magazine ads that teased you with piloting a giant mecha coukdn't be more deceiving. You hop in early in the first stage and then sit back and wait for a cinematic sequence light on sound effects to end. It never feels like you're fully interacting with everything and many PCE digicomics are more involved and have greater consequence. If it were part of one of those PCE Catalog demo discs, it would have been acceptable as-is.

Sheesh, no love for the Shubis here.  DQ, Black Tiger likes to give verbose break-downs about the things he dislikes, and yes the game is simple, but it's also...what, $15?  Maybe it sucked when you had to pay $50-$60, when it was new, but I'd say it definitely provides $15 worth of fun.  I've enjoyed playing it, though not as much as Shubibinman 2 (which, ironically, is the more glitchy, unpolished game between the two).  It's a moot point since apparently you can't play it without a Super System Card, but it's definitely not worth turning your nose up at to such a degree.

When you'll have a super CD capable system, you'll HAVE to play Nexzr.

Best vertical of the system.

I only elaborated because someone asked. Unfortunately, it's one of the first games to be suggested when someone new to PC Engine asks, "what are the very best CD games?" It's not expensive, but neither are many of the 100+ better PCE games. I only recommend it to people who narrow down their tastes to wanting a side scrolling action/platformer type game, but even Dynastic Hero fits the bill better.
