Title: super cd rom compatablility with games express?
Post by: pcenginekidd on April 11, 2016, 11:25:39 AM
hey everyone, very cool forum you've got here. I am new-ish to the PC Engine, I kept noticing the best sega cd games were ports from NEC or Hudson so I have been curious for a while and took the plunge when Kanye started tweeting to dodge the inevitable price increase. I've got the budget system pce classic w super cd rom, really loving it so far I feel this is an underrated combo unless there are compatibility issues for ge card/arcade card hence my question. I want to buy Hi Leg Fantasy but I have read that the game is only duo compatible. I was able to get a legitimate games express card on its' own for cheap and  assumed that one could just... -by the way? is it against the rules to talk about burning unlicensed games as well? if so never mind, I didn't try to do anything and you can't prove I did....  but have any of you managed to play a legitimate or otherwise copy on a super cd rom pc engine setup? if not and you have all of the above, here's a fun chance to see if it works!

Thanks

Games Express system cards do not have any ram. So their Super CD games need to be played on a system with built-in Super CD ability, like a Duo or the Super CD-ROM. Sounds like you have the IFU CD combo, which can't play Super CD Games Express games. If you end up with a Duo/SCD, you can play cdr copies of Games Express SCD games by playing the Games Express SCD system card rom on a Turbo Everdrive.

Don't waste money on buying Games Express system cards separately, they come packed with each of their CD games. Also don't bother with Hi Leg Fantasy, as it's a poor game which will erase all other saves on your system.

it is the super cd rom, this exact set up.:

but thanks for your response! so you are saying that yes it should work w super cd rom though it is a crappy game and could erase my other saves, yes?

I definitely don't think I will buy it, i'm just curious if the super cd rom has any limitations, because it seems great now that other consoles (duo r and rx) have gotten pricier, if this set up can play every game it also seems more reliable as I understand duo rx's controller pins come loose a lot.

Yeah, you can play 99% of the Turbo/PCE library with that setup. If you decide you'd like to play Arcade Card games (Fatal Fury 2/Special, World Heroes 2, Art of Fighting, Kabuki Itouryoden, Sapphire, Madou Monogatari), then you only need the Arcade Card DUO (not the PRO), which is the cheaper Arcade Card.

Welcome Aboard!

Talking about burning games is fine and dandy, just don't post (or request) links to iso downloads.
