This is pretty amazing, wonder if he'd drop the MC bomb on that turd who's been listing a boxed copy on ebay for 100K these past few months

Here is a little more info for anyone who doesn't want to watch the video.
There is a game collector named Tim Atwood who bought a lot of 6 game cases of sealed NES games back in the early 90's when they were being liquidated. Apparently he was getting annoyed at people inflating the price of games by trying to corner the market on them and has decided to sell off some/all of his sealed games to crash the market.
Here is a like to his sold listings: Tim Atwood's Ebay Listings (http://www.ebay.com/sch/atwoodtm/m.html?_nkw&_armrs=1&_ipg&_from&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2046732.m1684)
Apparently he had to pull some of his listings because he was advertising selling Stadium Events in them.
There is also some drama going on over at Nintendo Age about this as well.
Thread 1: After years of waiting...it is here and it's beautiful! Nothing to see here, just a case of Stadium Events (http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=159716)

For some reason I just don't see this affecting prices much
-
Me neither. Sure it'll hurt the value of Stadium Events (when was the last time you saw one sealed copy let alone eighteen?), but I can't see it doing much to more common games, especially not the market as a whole (including unsealed stuff).
LOL at the non-disclosure agreements people signed for the dozen copies he sold already. Good luck enforcing 'em.

I don't think he has to enforce them too much since he hand picks the people he sells to. The 12 copies that have supposedly been sold already happened a while ago, and the collecting community didn't know about them until just recently (and because of Tim rather than the buyers).

Just got slightly more interesting.

You may notice that he's listed Bigfoot a couple times. That was bought on eBay at open auction for if my memory recalls $122. The rest were presumably shortly thereafter. Just a really great find on/off eBay is all there is to the story really, at least as far as I know and if Tims reading this and any part of that is wrong, please correct me. I think a find like that would be difficult to pull off today because the seller would be getting a lot of emails. Even back then it was hard to pull off, these days I'd imagine impossible

For the life of me, I don't care an iota if the bottom drops out of a market that's so stupidly inflated. The only people who would suffer are the very people making this hobby into a business and buying multiple copies of games on investment speculation.

Damn.... And people say this place has drama!

Pretty neat.
I like this Tim fellow.
This is crazy fun drama.

I can't tell if I like this guy after reading his link.
Pros
1. He seems to be giving his friends deep discounts on games he got at a deep discount.
2. He uses the term sucking dick like SJWs never existed.
3. His free listing on ebay point is spot on.
Cons
1. The mention of grading games ruining a hobby seems fairly hypocritical from a sealed game collector. Also mentioning the guy buying up multiple copies while he himself has held these games for decades is ironic.
2. It also seems like it is too easy for someone who purchased games at a steep discount with what appears to be a dumb luck find of the century to criticize those overpaying for games.
3. Even though it makes sense he doesn't want someone to flip a game he sells at a discount for profit, the NDA seems odd.
-
1. He bought the games sealed at least 15 years before vga grading was the first nail in the retro collecting coffin. Additionally, we don't know that he was buying these games to create an artificial scarcity of supply like the other guy was. I personally don't think that was his intention and my proof is all the other non-rare games he also bought cases of.
2. How do you know it was dumb luck? Maybe these deals were available to anyone that wanted them in the 90s, it was just that no one cared. It would be like someone buying up all the vhs tapes today for pennies and 20 years later they become the hot collecting item. Maybe he was a visionary? Maybe he was just passionate about something when no one else was?
3. Some people don't like making private sales public knowledge.
I think my conclusions are my than likely closer to the truth than your cons are and any reasonable person would agree. Not saying you are wrong, but I think your conclusions are less likely

It's was a dumb luck find because he was on a job site cleaning out a warehouse and was told to trash everything. There was a pallet of sealed game cases in the warehouse and he decided to keep them.

Ditto.
The ebay purchases for $100 each may have been good timing, or maybe he was one of the eBay F5 refresh originators.
In actuality, think that this guy is just like 95% of us, pretty good guy with some hypocritical views. His views just have more weight because of his stash and Internet fame. He doesn't appear to be an outright flipper jerk nor does he appear to be generous like Beamer or some of those around here, he's somewhere in the middle with the rest of us.

well i agree that part was total luck, but that was just the pre-1990 stuff. most of the really valuable stuff came post-90 (other than Stadium Events... which had its own circumstances why its so rare). again, i see him more as just a hard core collector who did it for a very long time. if you do this stuff long enough, a little luck will come your way eventually

Also mentioning the guy buying up multiple copies while he himself has held these games for decades is ironic.
This is what has bothered me about the CUPodcast video as well as others calling this guy a hero or a saint.
Part of the reason SE hit $35k for a sealed copy was the belief that only maybe one or two existed in new condition. On the NA registry, there are only 9 CIB or New copies. This new information tripled the known number of CIB/New in existence. Essentially, by hiding the fact that these 18 copies existed for 20+ years, he helped that game attain its high price tag. Or, at least, he could have prevented it from ever getting that high in the first place. Instead, he stayed silent.

An interesting thought, but what if he just didn't intend to sell them at all until now? Even if he made it clear 10 years ago that there were 18 more sealed copies than the 2 known to exist, there would still be the same number of copies actually available to be bought/sold. 20 sealed copies is still a minuscule amount in the grand scheme of things. Yeah, there probably aren't 18 more people who would spend $35k but I wouldn't be terribly surprised at all if there were 18 people out there who'd fork over a lower 5-digit number for a sealed copy.

I see your point, but I still think that buyer who paid $35k for his sealed copy wouldn't have paid that, knowing that 18 more copies could hit the market, if atwood had changed his mind (which happened!). The only reason the turd known as Stadium Events has any value, is because it is a trophy piece. Its a far less interesting trophy piece when there are 20 in the world instead of 2.
Who knows, maybe the original sealed SE buyer was some oil baron, who wipes his ass with $35k. Then its probably stacked on top of six Fabergé eggs in his back closet.

I'm not going to lie, if I had a couple dozen old toys in my basement that I could sell to obscenely wealthy collectors for upwards of 100k combined...I'd get myself 100k.
-
It is bat shit crazy that anyone would pay that much for a game, even if you are a rich ass with money To burn. To me, even 4 figures is crazy for a game.

It is pretty obvious that Pat is just sucking up to the guy so he can get in his good graces to get one of the remaining 6 sealed Stadium Events.

Wow, so that really happened... I thought $35k-selling "gold" carts was a NeoGeo thang, that it happens for NES carts also is a little surprising, but then again I guess big-spending nuts everywhere shouldn't be surprising after all these years of our Gouging thread whatever the platform... :/

Yeah, the temptation to separate a big-spending nutjob of his money is undeniable. The drawback is the public side effects it has on down to the rest of us.

If you guys read the link above, you'll see that the dude says he is *NOT* a saint or a hero and does not want to be portrayed that way.
He is happy to troll folks with a documented history of being douchebags, though.
I don't need, nor do I want, Tim to be a saint.
Just the fact that he is single-handedly messing with the collective "collectard e-penis douchebag" mindset is awesome.
Everyone involved in this has his/her own motives. Tim could be sitting on 36 additional sealed copies of Stadium Events. I don't care.
Folks who are criticizing Tim, instead of enjoying the absurdity, are part of the problem in our hobby, IMHO.
I have grown increasingly sickened by the Pokemon mentality + old-fashioned braggarts + douchebaggery.
Anything done to highlight the absurdity is a good thing.
-
I've avoided all this over at NA and elsewhere.
I vote HERO.
-

Even 3 figures is crazy in my book. I have done it a couple of times in the past (especially on PC Engine imports during the 90's) but I wouldn't again for a single game I don't think. I could be wrong but I can't think of anything I'd blow $100+ on anymore.

paying more than 20$ for any game alone is pretty crazy imo. games gotta be pretty amazing to get me to pay more than that. that being said tho i'd pay a bit more to get some arcade pcbs that don't have some sort of flashcart or other cheap means of playing on original hardware
-

I hate to say it, but I totally agree. 20$ is the breaking point where I start to seriously consider if I will put more than a few hours into a game. 100$+ it has to be a childhood glorious memory, or something I will sink 100+ hours into. 1$/hr? I should say? :P How much do you want to pay for entertainment an hour, not including shelf candy?
-
I feel the exact same way, spending 3 figures on a game is crazy. I've only spent $100+ on a single game twice in my life. Now days I'm really hesitant to spend even $20 for a game. However, I've been told I'm a cheap bastard before.
-
1$/hr? I should say?
funny you say that, I think the exact same thing. 1$/hr is the most i'd like to pay for playing a game.
-
$1 per hour? Whoever created Sudoku is f*cking rich, I spent over $1,000 on this game on my 3DS easy, another $1000 for one on my smart phone, etc. Multiply that by a few thousand other Sudoku games and a few million people who plays it.
:p
Most games I keep under $20, there are rare cases I've spent more. I think the last time I spent $50+ on a single TG16 game is Dragon Trap.

So you only buy games that have been discontinued long enough to be at such a low price? Have you ever bought games at full price? If so, when did that change?
1$/hr? I should say?

Do you make an exception to the $20 limit for RPGs, since you're getting $30 - $50 worth of play time from them?

It's a lot harder for me to jump into new games, yeah, which is why I hate saying that.
I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles X last year and have since put 110$ hours into it - so the new game price feels like a good investment.
I plan on picking up Uncharted 4 to play with my fiance - she likes to watch these games for the spectacle and story like an action movie - and I doubt it will take me more than 10 hours to beat that, so that's ~$6/hour, but I might just rent that at redbox over the weekend making it 60 cents an hour... I've always been a cheep skate/rental guy - most of the old games I've picked up have been supplimenting my library with games I played a lot as rentals.
So yeah, I typically wait for price drops to pick up games, unless I know I'll sink time into it and want to play it urgently. I'll probably pay full price for FFXV... :(

So you only buy games that have been discontinued long enough to be at such a low price? Have you ever bought games at full price? If so, when did that change?
Do you make an exception to the $20 limit for RPGs, since you're getting $30 - $50 worth of play time from them?
Never bought games at full price. I usually wait until around next generation to buy a console. hype train is over rated
Also I haven't really bought any RPGs lately, I have so many older ones to play still . I did pick up dark souls 2 with all the DLC on ps3 for 25$ though. that's one of those amazing games that's worth it, especially considering i get atleast 100 hours play time from them. Actually now that i think of it I picked up dragons dogma dark arisen for around the same cost too. i guess my limit goes up by 5$ for RPGs lol. big spending

James Brown was the godfather of soul, yet he beat his wife. The greatness of ones works doesn't increase as one removes sin from their lives. I don't know why that's such a problem for people to understand. Someone can be a complete prick but still do something cool, maybe on a regular basis even.
Anyone who collects sealed cases of shit is probably an ass but if this is all above board, it's pretty terrific. I would *love* to be able to drop a bomb like that on those a$$holes. I would like to find a skid of this shitty unplayable non-game and tank the value of his six copies as well as the others. Circus Lido that shit right into the dollar bin.

Ha! It's extra funny that people pay such silly sums for such a turd of a game. Too bad the Turbo's white whale isn't something like World Sports Competition, a game one hell of a lot less fun to play than Magical Chase.

$1/hour of entertainment? You've never spent ~$8 or whatever to watch a four hour movie? Gone to a bar with your friends and had a tab of over $20 for a couple of hours of fun with the guys?
Look at something like tickets to a football game. You spend more money than that on Parking (ignoring the $150 ticket to the actual game). $1/hour seems a little bit on the hyper-cheap side of things to me...

Agreed, I've paid 150$ for NHL playoff tickets, and I subscribed to CABLE for a while recently, so it's very hypocritical for me to say. I think it's because I already have a glut of games I've not played enough of - it's difficult for me to sell my myself (let alone my fiance) on getting any new games when I already have a bunch to play.

games are more of a time-wasting individual past time then something more eventful with friends like a movie or sports game. a good cheap solo past time.

It is bat shit crazy that anyone would pay that much for a game, even if you are a rich ass with money To burn. To me, even 4 figures is crazy for a game.
Even 3 figures is crazy in my book. I have done it a couple of times in the past (especially on PC Engine imports during the 90's) but I wouldn't again for a single game I don't think. I could be wrong but I can't think of anything I'd blow $100+ on anymore.
So you're not interested in buying my MIB copy of TurboGrafx-16 Magical Chase for $100?
I was just talking about plausible situations! :) But I could probably find the scratch to help you unload it since you asked nicely.

I don't mind paying $$$ for anything that provides me with happiness.

Me neither man, but I have to limit myself a little bit. Plenty of awesome games out there that you can get without going broke to do so!
