Title: Mobile Light Force PS1
Post by: bob on May 18, 2016, 12:10:17 PM
has anybody played this?  i never heard of it before today.  i was google searching Elemental Gearbolt and this came up as a game tied to its story.  Looks like Mobile Light Force is going for around $30, so its not something i wanted to shell out for unless worth it.  The youtube vids look cool, but looking for any opinion on its gameplay.

It's fun, I enjoy it quite a bit. It's a port of "GunBird".

Yeah, IIRC, it's GunBird 1, & it came out at a budget price of $20 BITD.  There's also a Mobile Light Force 2 on PS2 IIRC, but it's totally unrelated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikigami_no_Shiro

Yeah, those guys...for some reason they thought anime looking stuff was still offensive to Americans or something so they made this hilariously unrelated new name and cover art like in the TG16 days. It reminds me of SNES Phalanx almost.

It looks like Charlies Angels

and then you fire it up and go "who's this tittybitch, and bunnygirl on a broom"

I was interested and then I looked at the Wiki page:

Quote
All in-game plot in this version, including the game's ending, was removed and character names were changed to those of XS Games employees. The game featured a Charlie's Angels-style cover picture, completely unrelated to the original characters or the game's theme. The fan art gallery was also removed from the game, although the directories are still intact on the disc if inserted into a PC.

Sounds like an example of where I'd rather have the JP version.

Yeah, you only buy MLF to get some of that "murdered translation" nostalgia going.

I grabbed it because it was 2$.  That's the only reason.

It's on my desk right here at work, hooked up to a PSONE + screen.

its cooler than the plebs with their Cube + Smash Bros.

I also got it for less than a night with gynt's mom (10$) and just wanted it for the gameplay, I had not interest in story or presentation at that price I was just hoping for a shooter to play on my PS1 - this was the first shooter I got for the system.

fixed.

Playing on MAME is the better option, because you get the correct translation (if you play the World ROM), and you don't deal with the f*ckery of those twerps mucking up the game.

The DC port of Gunbird 2 is lovely AND correct AND has Morrigan and Aine (great characters), but nowadays very expensive (not if you have blank cds though lol).

On the PS1, the port of Strikers 1945 II (confusingly named in the West as just Strikers 1945) is pretty good, and should still be within cheapish range... though nothing beats buying it new for $9 a few years ago...

This game used to be 2.99 or so maybe 10 years ago and could be found at nearly every gamestop. It, Mobile Light Force 2 (which is Castle of Shikigami) and Castle Shikigami II are great cheap pickups.
