Title: Did I get a decent deal?
Post by: gex on May 31, 2016, 08:59:33 AM
Picking up a TurboExpress (recapped) with its original box for $230USD and the tuner attachment.

Good deal? Fair? I haven't bought one before

Doesn't come with the bonk 3 in the picture haha

What difference does it make? It's yours now.

When you care it's usually a good idea to ask these kinds of questions *before* you buy. Otherwise the knowledge is useless.

I would say this is an OK deal though, to answer your question.

Nope, I said "I'm picking up". As in I don't own it yet, but I have plans to come see it tonight

Assuming it's in good condition inside and out, that ain't a bad deal.  The TurboVision isn't FM, though, it's for TV signals; there's not many analog signals nowadays, so it's more for collecting, but it's still useful for shits and giggles to use the 'Express as a monitor.

Ohhh I always wondered how to output the signal to a tv. I thought it was a special cord or something. Thanks!

It doesn't output the signal to TV, it tunes TV. You watch TV on it...nowadays I hope you live near some really improvised TV stations though since it's almost impossible to use anywhere.

Sorry, I wasn't sure if you were in a hurry or just terrible with English. With no prior posts I didn't have much to work with other than an incomplete sentence.

And if you think *I'm* an a$$hole, wait until you get yelled at for the Tapatalk thing, on a forum that when visited plainly tells you to use it.

Seemed like a good deal until you said that Bonk 3 isn't included. Instead it's just fair. I wouldn't have paid that much if it wasn't recapped.

Hmmm ok, I might have to rethink then. Thanks for your input

I think he's f*cking with you. Bonk 3 goes for that much by itself and you specifically said it WAS recapped, right?

I just checked and cheapest one on Ebay is $299 without any mention of being recapped. I don't now how much a recap is on one of these things but that's gotta be at least $50 worth of labor. If you want it. Get it. Seems like a good deal.

BTW, I used to own a TurboExpress and a GameBoy back in the day when they were new. TurboExpress is simply awesome and blows the Gameboy out of the water any day of the week. Also, the TV tuner was awesome when Analog stations still existed.

Hmmm I don't know about that. Game boy is pretty damn awesome.

In respect to games, there are some pretty damn awesome games on the Gameboy and that's why I owned one. However, as far as graphics and sound goes, TurboExpress is better in my opinion. Plus it was just insanely awesome at the time that you could play the same game on your TV with a TurboGrafx and also on the road with the TurboExpress.

It's hard to compare a gameboy to a TurboExpress lol.

The gameboy had its own library of unique games. The Turbografx was just another to play the awesomeness of NEC

$230, capped amd with box is cheaper than you will find on ebay, but that doesnt mean shit.
is it WORTH $230 to you?  thats the question.
the box is useless, so who cares?  paying a premium for a box is dumb.
be patient and you will find one cheaper, possibly with a few games.

Well I guess it depends if he wants the box. To a collector, the box is worth a premium. However, most people buying systems don't care about that. Box or no box, I think it is a good deal. Who knows how long you will have to wait to find another one for the same price or less? You might be waiting a long time...

I spent 180 for one at a local shop last month. Had the tv tuner too. But needed a recap and no box.

There are deals to be had in the world still.  I finally got a Turbo Express within the last year for $140 with one game included.  Still not an unbeatable price but I was pleased as it's easily worth that much for me.

Bummer. Sounded like a sweet deal to me.

You could get some good usage out of the tuner kit I think. Get an RCA cable and cut the tip off. Solder a piece of wire to the center lead. Plug the RCA male end into the RF plug on any retro console and attach the other end of the wire to the antenna on the tuner unit.

Boom! Now you can play other game systems on the Turbo Express! 8)

PS - Be careful not to short the antenna wire to ground as some consoles supply a 5V "phantom" supply on the RF pin to power the auto-switches. This 5V "phantom" DC supply may or may not be protected by a shunt resistor so you might want to use caustion. You could also try hooking the console to an old pair of rabbit ears but you're unlikely to get more than a couple feet of reception without an RF amp.

First, you know you can just buy a composite to 3.5mm cable, right?

Second, why would you want to play a home console on a tiny first gen lcd screen?

Because that would be awesome.

Playing Sega CD or PS2 or _________ on the tiny TurboExpress screen is friggin' awesome.

Back in the day, I played VHS through it—just because it was AWESOME.

i wonder if you could have played action max on it.  even though the red light you stick on the tv would have covered the whole screen.  but on the bright side, you would never miss!

No... you can use the TE screen.  You would still need the console and it's controller.  This convo is making me feel dumber with every post
